الإجابة Disable auto search for printer in Add Printer wizard

(I posted this in the Windows 7 forum.  they told me to come here)

    Windows 7 32/64 bit.

START -> Devices and Printers -> Add Printer -> Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer

Immediately after doing the above steps Windows 7 searches and comes back with results. They are very strange results. I assumed it was broadcasting the network and finding local network printers, but some of them are for other buildings that have different subnets/broadcast domains. So it doesn't see to be doing that. Rarely is the printer you want one of the ones there.

I would like to do one of the following:

    1. Disable the searching and just go to the next step where they can choose to search the directory (like they used to always do in Windows XP).
    2. List all of the printers from my print server in the first list.

All of the printers are already listed in AD and the print server is 2008R2. We have a couple older ones that are 2003 R2 and they do show some printers but not all. I just don't know what makes them appear in that location. Is the a GPO I can use to get this working?

Preferably I'd like to do the second option because the searching can be handy when connecting home printers when it just finds them.

When you disable the Network Scan Page policy, the page will never be displayed in Add Printer.  The search is keyed off the subnet information entered into the AD sites and subnets descriptions.

    from the policy description
If this setting is disabled, the network scan page will not be displayed.

@Alan:  Now you got what I am looking for

To disable the network scan screen entirely when on corporate network:

    1. GPMC -> Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Printers
    2. Edit:  "Add Printer wizard - Network scan page (Managed network)"
    3. Select "Disabled"
    4. Click "OK"
    5. Close GPMC edit window

To leave the scan screen but only display Active Directory printers on coporate network:

    1. GPMC -> Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Printers
    2. Edit: "Add Printer wizard - Network scan page (Managed network)"
    3. Select "Enabled"
    4. Set "Number of directory printers" to "200"
    5. Set "Number of TCP/IP printers" to "0"
    6. Set "Number of Web Services Printers" to "0"
    7. Set "Number of Bluetooth printers" to "0"
    8. Set "Number of shared printers" to "0"
    9. Click "OK"
    10. Close GPMC edit window

NOTE:  There is "Managed Network" and "Unmanaged Network" settings.  I left the Unmanaged network default so users would find their home printers and be able to add them, but only see those approved printers when on the corporate network.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions.

    Hello,

To disable printers auto discover, you can try the following options. You can use Group Policy and GP Preferences registry.

    1. To disable the net crawl functionality
      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/276322
    2. Disable "Browse the network to find printers" setting under User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Printers
      http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=234270
    3. Enable "Add Printer wizard - Network scan page" setting and set the number of printers to display to "0"

    Brent,

Are these all required or is it choose one of the 4 that I'd prefer best?

Secondly, what is it that I can do to make printers appear in the scanning area?  They are all on a print server and they are listed in the directory.

    Hi,

According to your situation, the third option would fit you. If you would like to not display printers of a certain type, you can enable this policy and set the number of printers to display to 0. You can select "The printer that I want isn't listed", as shown in the figure, you can see three options to add printer.

    Alan -

How do you disable the Web Services queue and only want to default to TCP/IP in the add network printer option?

Is this a registry setting or a GPO?

Turn off the WSD network stack on the device.

You could change the PnP X IP Bus Enumerator to Manual but you would need to do this on every machine.  Disabling the service on the device will block everyone from connection using this protocol stack.

    IN

In regards to these 4 options I think one will help me but just need clarification. My problem is that we are using 2008 server and W7 workstations and no AD. THe W7 machines log into the terminal server and we untick printers on the RDP connection however sometimes this is missed and you end up with a swag of auto printers. This is what I am trying to avoid by controls at the TServer
