IE9 Tabbed Browsing Option Reverts On Log Off Or Computer Restart
-
11. února 2012 8:06Hi. i'm using Windows 7 x64 and Internet Explorer 9. I wish to change its behavior so that new tabs are opened up in my first homepage. I go into internet options and change the settings so that this occurs and it works. The problem however comes whenever I log off or shut down the computer. When logging back on, the change reverts back to new tabs being opened up in a blank tab instead of my first homepage. I have tried reverting to IE8 and it works, however upon reinstalling IE9 the problem persists. I have cleared user settings and reset Internet Explorer to no avail. I have run Spybot, Autoruns, Combofix, AVG and TDSSKiller and none of these options have found the source of my problem. Other settings don't seem to be affected; only that one setting doesn't seem to stick. Could anyone help me out finding the source of my problem?

Hi,
If this is happening on a work computer, contact your Help Desk.... they may be using scripts to reset the Ie settings when the computer is booted.
Known newtabs highjackers are old versions of the Google and AOL toolbars. Uninstall or update from the respective vendors.
When IE opens your fist homepage if it cannot connect to the internet or it cannot find the page it will fallback to using about:blank for the first homepage.... this seems the most likely cause of your issue. You probably have a mobile connection and are tying to start IE automatically when your computer starts.
To start IE automatically when your computer starts, place a shortcut in the startup folder (do not launch iexplore.exe from the windows startup list.. (see msconfig) go Start>Programs>Start up... right click... Add>New>Shortcut
Consult your mobile usb modem's documentation... there should be settings to enable the modem at windows startup automatically.
Regards.

Hi Boko,
make about:tabs your first homepage....
this will give you a better user experience and will not be dependant apon you having a connection active at startup.

Hi. Thank you guys for your help, but none of these seem to be the issue. This is a private computer on a small network that I control. No scripts are installed on this machine.
Google and AOL toolbars are not installed onto my PC. I dislike almost all toolbars and will immediately uninstall them.
I can connect to the internet. I know this because when I open up IE9 it opens up and loads my first webpage. Then, upon clicking the new tab button it opens up about:blank. I manually open up Internet Explorer instead of having it open up on startup.
I am not on a mobile USB device. I am connecting through a laptop with a built-in wireless connection to my router.

It seems it reverts back to a blank webpage when about:tabs is set to open up after a restart as well.
I should also note that there is one other odd nuance. Sometimes when I launch Internet Explorer, the menu bar will be greyed out and inaccesible. Closing Internet Explorer and reopening it will fix this problem.

Hi,
by scripts I meant administrator Group Policy settings (gpedit.msc)... not available on Home Editions of Win 7.
(Are your machines upto date with Windows Updates by the way.... )
try
1. reset your new tabs page to your first homepage.
2. Start>Control Panel>Internet Options>Advanced tab, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions".
3. Close all IE Windows and reboot.
If that does not work, go
Start>Run>msconfig>Startup tab and uncheck "Adobe reader and Acrobat Manager', 'Apple Push' and 'Google Updater' (or Google Toolbar updater) if they are in the list. (sorry, old versions of the Google toolbar left the Google toolbar updater behind when the toolbar was uninstalled, many OEM Windows builds come with the GTB pre-installed, it is also bundled with many software downloads.)
Reset your new tabs page to your first homepage and reboot again.
If that does not work post back with the web address of your fist home page for us to try and reproduce the issue.
Regards.

Make a note of the changes that I have asked you to make to IE settings and msconfig settings... you may like to change them back afterwards.)
One more question... do you have teatimer installed (part of spybot search and destroy). Are you using Parental Controls?

Okay. Lots of stuff to try out. Thanks for being patient with me.
My computer is running Windows 7 Home, so there is no Group Policy in effect. Windows is up to date.
Disabling third party add-ons did not work to fix this issue.
Disabling Adobe Reader and Acrobat Manager and Apple Push did not work to fix the issue. Google Updater and Google Toolbar Updater did not exist to disable.
My first homepage is yahoo. www.yahoo.com.
Teatimer is installed but this problem occured before teatimer was installed. To be precise I installed Spybot S&D in response to suspicions I may have malware that is causing this. All of my scans have come up clean though. The only programs of the ones I mentioned that were installed onto this system at the time the problem began was AVG Internet Security 2011, but that had been installed without issues for a long time. I should also note that this problem occurs on both the 32-bit and 64-bit version of internet explorer. I am not using parental controls. Here is a list of the currently running programs on startup with those two services disabled, their filenames and any special settings they are running:
Alps Pointing-device Driver (apoint.exe)
IDT PC Audio (sttray64.exe)
Lexmark Device Monitor (lxbmmon.exe)
Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center (wmdc.exe)
Intel Common User Interface (this entry is listed three times) (igfxtray.exe, hkcmd.exe and igfxpers.exe)
Microsoft Intellipoint (ipoint.exe)
Microsoft Windows Operating System (sidebar.exe) /autorun
Spybot - Search & Destroy (TeaTimer.exe)
Default Manager (DefMgr.exe) -resume
CyberLink PowerDVD (PDVDDXSrv.exe)
AVG Internet Security (avgtray.exe)
Microsoft Office 2010 (BCSSync.exe) /DelayServices
MobileMe (AppleSyncNotifier.exe)
Java Platform SE Auto Updater 2 0 (jusched.exe)
QuickTime (QTTask.exe) -atboottime
VProtect Application (for AVG) (vprot.exe)
Monitor Application (for Leapfrog Connect) (Monitor.exe)
ROC_roc_dec12 (this is installed in the AVG Secure Search folder) (ROC_roc_dec12.exe) /PROMPT /CMPID=roc_dec12
iTunes (iTunesHelper.exe)Seeing that you are recommending disabling some apple products I tried disabling the rest of them, but the problem persists.
Then I tried to disable all startup items and the problem is resolved. As I post this I am going to enable them one at a time and see which one borks up IE. -

It turns out that the vProtect Application is what is doing it, so AVG Secure Search is the problem. This was AVG's Toolbar, which was uninstalled a while back. Remnents of it remained and continued to run. Thank you again for your help. I couldn't have done it without you!
If anyone else has this problem, the solution is simple. Open up the Registry editor and navigate to wherever your vProt.exe startup entry is located in your registry. In my case it was:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Delete the entry for vProt.exe and restart.

Hi,
simple answer.....
tea-timer/Spybot search and destroy has options to prevent changes to the registry settings for IE's homepage. (maybe other keys, I don't use it so I don't know what the current versions do)....they use a registry hook (a method of continually monitoring which programs make changes to selected nodes in the registry)
My understanding was that it was incompatible with Win7/IE9 installations.... it had its origins back when XP was the dominant OS. It is not malware, it is a reputable product, but perhaps out of date.
(Registry security has changed in Win7 and IE9 has different security modes that it uses to access registry keys, the old registry hook apis no longer apply.)
here is the web search I used.
http://www.google.com/search?q=tea-timer%20and%20IE9%20win7
It's registry hooks should be easy to confirm....
1. uncheck Spybot Search and destroy in your Windows startup list using msconfig
(I am also unsure about leapfrog... http://www.google.com/search?q=leapfrog%20monitor.exe suggests it may be classed as malware)
mmm... you may like to turn off the Windows Sidebar before you reboot (turn off by clicking the sidebar controls on the desktop, not from the msconfig startup list)
2. reboot your computer so that teatimer is closed, but not restarted with the reboot.
3. Retest.... you may at this stage also undo the IE settings I told you to try before... although I recommend keeping "Enable third-party browser extensions" unchecked... this will stop ANY Toolbar or Browser Helper Object from being loaded into IE,, while still allowing the browser to use Command bar buttons, Accelerators and Flash/ActiveX.
I think you will be happyJack.
I don't think you need Spybot... so you can safely uninstall it without compromising IE9. You have AVG.
Regards.

Your suggestion to remove vProt.exe from the registry worked for me even though I still have AVG installed & running fine. My reg entry was different to yours, mine was HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
My IE9 Tabs open up properly with my first home page, all seems fine now, thanks for that.

12. června 2012 0:34Boko, I've spent a lot of time trawling for an answer to this problem. I thought that I had disabled everything that could stop me making changes to my IE9 settings but I was wrong. Finally, your solution has worked for me, thankyou. Does this mean that there are other remnants of the AVG toolbar that are not serving any useful purpose and if so, how can I remove them.

BOKO: This worked magnificently for me! Thank you 1 million times over! I was stressing-out trying to figure out how to resolve this issue which just one day decided to give me problems. One suggestion for any of you out there having trouble finding the EXACT location of the vProt.exe entry: Use the Find feature in the Registry Editor and it will take you exactly to it. Mine was not exactly where it was mentioned here or in another users post but after using the Find feature in the Registry Editor it took me right to it, I then deleted it, restarted my computer and BAM! Problem resolved, thanks again!!!!

I have, also, been struggling with this issue for months - this issue is annoying, albeit somewhat minor.
I, like most people, I assume, just want the program - or any program - to remember my preferences and when it doesn't it is quite irksome.
I was starting to think that I was the only person in the world who was experiencing this phenomenom - drat, I'm no longer unique :o)
Thank you for the solution.
I'd love to find a solution now for having win7 remember the state of my folders from when they were last open. I resize them so they sit side by side taking up half of the screen each, close them, re-open them and they're back to the default state from the day that the OS was installed - this is frustrating and wastes a lot of time, everyday, resizing folders over and over. I have noticed that WLMessenger demonstrates the same issue so I expect that the root of the problem is with Win7.

23. června 2012 4:29The vProt.exe has reinstalled itself. The fix lasted 10 days. How can I stop this key from coming back again?
While I'm at it, Messenger companion also like to enable itself after I disable it.- Upravený EKGEKH 23. června 2012 4:33
