Those files that turn themselves into pesky LNK files

I have had this happen before, but can't remember how to solve this issue. Why did my fesktop icons change to looking all the same (a note pad) from looking like the icon the file belongs and is pictured as i.e. internet picture folder has e with a piece of paper and gold piee of ribbon on ii, printer folder has picture of a printer on it etc.
