OdpovědětWindows Installer Crash

  • 17. ledna 2009 22:59zero061099 Uživatelské medaileUživatelské medaileUživatelské medaileUživatelské medaileUživatelské medaile

It seems windows installer crashes alot. I have tried installing 2 things with the same result.

    -Vmware Workstation
    -Mirrors Edge (new PC game)

Does anyone else have this problem?

I would understand if it was a app compatibility (which it probably is) but why the windows installer?

Crashes in new OS are sometimes due the program that is being installed. Try some other software, if it continues it may be a problem.
All programs that works well with Vista should have no problem with Seven.

I think this is related to another problem where windows updates will not install and windows explorer will crash. I am not sure what happened today but things started failing today. Hopefully someone has an answer asap. :(

Having the exact same problem. Ironically, I think it started, or at least I only started noticing it, while trying to install Mirror's Edge. Installers that once worked, the python installer for example, now crash.

I don't believe the two are related. I don't experience the Windows Update bug at all.

Here's the error message that appears in the my event log. Hopefully it's of some help.

When did you first notice the update problems?

    1. The first sign I noticed things going wrong was when I tried loading an Office 2003 iso using Virtual Clone Drive across a network. Explorer would not show the loaded iso, and explorer started going haywire. I then rebooted and I could now see the Office 2003 iso loaded.
    2. Went to install Office and I was getting a windows installer error which I could not bypass. Tried setting compatibilty modes to Xp and Vista nothing worked.
    3. Then I thought i might give Open Office a try since I could not install Office, and I then got the same Windows installer errors again could not bypass.
    4. I then installed Windows Live mail which worked fine.
    5. Tried to install Windows mobility device center same windows installer errors.
    6. I then noticed I had 6-7 Windows Updates, they were all related to Office 2007 why I needed these updates I am not exactly sure, but from looking at some of the explanations it was required for Web Expression and some other app, and this is when I really noticed the crashing of Windows Explorer.

I can no longer open the Windows Update without Explorer crashing, doing the shutdown and install updates does not work. Trying to install an app will cause explorer to crash.

My system is 64 bit, and I have managed to install a ton of apps at the beginning of the week with no problems until yesterday.

I can confirm this fix worked for me as well. I installed Office 2003 then tried to install Java and the installer would hang. Now I have restored to before Office was installed and the Installer works again.

Getting the update/explorer/no installations issue here, too. Really odd. Mine only started today, I installed Office 2007.. ooh.. 'bout a week ago. I'm going to go scrounge through my event logs and see if I can find anything starting today.

I did notice the Installer service was set to manual/stopped, but changing that didn't do any good.

Also, what registry tweaks and service/control panel adjustments did you make (if any) ?

Guess it's a somewhat positive thing I'm not the only one with this problem. I tried several things to no avail.
As others here, I've got Virtual Clone Drive and Mirror's Edge installed with no problems. Now it seems almost every application crashes on start.

Nothing out of the ordinary.. ActivePerl, Office 2007, Pidgin, mIRC, Firefox, couple of games here and there. No registry/cpanel tweaks.

Looked through my logs, but there was nothing until the first Windows Update/Explorer crash.

Seems something got corrupt/damaged. There might be a flaw in explorer and how it interacts with a network.
    Send a feedback to microsoft.

    PS

If you are adventurous redo what you did, if the same problem occurs there is definitely a flaw.

Yes, all of the crashes have been related to ntdll.dll ... so now I'm more interested in knowing what is causing it to go from working perfectly to not working at all. There is definitely a registry setting or service configuration that is breaking.

    Yeah, same.

I just did a restore to before I installed ActivePerl. Installers are working again (though it deleted the new MSI's that I downloaded, then had the gall to say my documents weren't affected..). We'll see how long this lasts, eh?

I had the same thing happen... except that it also wiped out all the EXE installers I downloaded since the restore point too! I was pissed, although fortunately I had them all stored on another drive, but still.

Until this is resolved, every time I prepare to install a program, I'm taking a restore point.

I was wondering the same thing... but I left my system on overnight (same as every night) and there's no signs of any changes today.

By the way, the diagnostic host service issue I posted from my event log earlier is resolved and totally unrelated to this issue. Apparently I was a bit too aggressive a few years ago when I setup my Domain Security Policy on my Windows Server 2003 box... since I only had 2000/XP clients to deal with, I had configured a few of the account rights in a way that it prevented the newer Vista/W7 services from starting properly. Oops!

I am also getting the same problem when installing any software with the Windows Installer. Every other software installer seems to be working properly. Here's a crash log from trying to install Office 03, but it happens with VMware, VirtualPC, VirtualBox, and Outlook 07. A few days ago I installed Steam from an MSI successfully. I'm not sure when the problem started, just came across it today. This is my 3rd day of testing Win7.

ntdll.dll is a kernel file, and it might be a red hearing with the issue BTW

    http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000960.htm

I get the Installer crash issue with:
    - Installing applications
    - Running Windows Update (which crashes explorer.exe)

Nothing fancy on this PC after a clean 64bit install.   The fact that we are seeing this occur across multiple systems which so far appear unrelated is interesting, and most likely related to an OS function, more than application.

Also,  interesting that this appears to be after a point in time.  So what changes on the system over time?

1 -  Windows update installed updates and restarted system -  Unfortunately I cannot get into WU to see the history, but I show none in the system log.
2 - Windows Defender installed an update -  I see on 1/16/2009 Defender did install an update:

Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.49.2011.0)

Did this start happening on the 16th?

Ok, So I think I have everything working, so let me explain what the problem is, how to repro, and how to TEMPORARILY Fix it

    Problem:

When trying to install programs, the Windows Installer crashes, and you cannot install.  Also some people were having explorer.exe crash when trying to run Windows Update

    Diagnosis:
It appears this behavior started afte the Critical Update for Windows Defender that was pushed out on 1/16/2009 through Windows Update.

    Solution:

1 - Use the Recovery applet in control panel to do a restore point to right before that 1/16/2009 update.
    2 - Reboot
3 - Let Windows Update redownload this update and re-apply it to your system.
    4 - Reboot
5 - I am now able to use Windows Update, and install programs

I am not sure how perm this is, but maybe something was corrupt with the first time it updated?

I also turned Windows Update to manual to see if another update happens, etc.  I had also disabled Defender,  but then re-enabled it without issue.

    Jef

I'll buy into the corrupt download/install theory until it happens again, lol. But seriously, that's the only explanation I have for this since I've been able to install things today without issue and cannot duplicate the issue.

I will continue to take daily snapshots with system restore, however, lol.

Let me know if you manage to remove the update through means other than System Restore as I too have no restore point and the same crashing during install of programs.  The above fix is no good if you don't have restore points quite that far back.

I can confirm this fix worked for me as well. I installed Office 2003 then tried to install Java and the installer would hang. Now I have restored to before Office was installed and the Installer works again.

    Thank you!

I had the same issue and what may be the same order...  I installed Office 2007, then the next day installed Firefox and a couple other smallish programs.  I went to install Java and it said the downloaded installer was corrupted (something along that line). From then on, no .msi would work and Windows Update would crash Explorer... Same ntdll.dll error.  I restored to befrore Office install and all is good again.  I've been doing manual restore points also now.  Reinstalled Firefox... working... Installed Java... working...  I'm wondering if Office, since it's such a monster of a program is doing something behinds the scenes...
A lot, if not all, the errors show the Exception Code: 0xc0000005.  Isn't that an "Access Denied" code?  Perhaps something is changing the permisions on a registry key somewhere?

Thanks for the restore point idea.  I was having issues installing programs as discribed in this thread.  Had a restore point for 1/13 and 1/ 16/09.  Fell back to the 1/13 and then did the updates again.  Now can install programs that failed before.  Do figure.

I've also had Windows Installer crash trying to install Virtual PC 2007 SP1.  In fact I had to try at least 4 times just to uninstall the old VPC, because three times in a row the Windows Installer crashed.

I submitted the error report each time, but of course it never offered any helpful assistance.

The registry key fixed the issue for me as well. And while I hadn't tried going to a previous restore point, the 1/16 Defender update was the last time I'd successfully applied updates.

Unlike some other people's experiences, however, I was still able to install software -- I'd installed IrfanView on Saturday, for example. But attempting to launch Windows Update would crash Explorer.exe every time.

I realize this is beta software, but this crash suggests that Microsoft has some work left to do on sanity-checking input values. The registry is merely a repository for information; a missing, incorrect or even corrupted registry key should give an error message to that effect, not cause a crash. Clearly, some piece of code is failing to verify that an input value makes sense before attempting to make use of it.

And I still can't submit feedback using the feedback tool.

The underscore does nothing. It's the equivalent of deleting the key entirely it just allows you to change it back, remove the underscore, if something adverse happens as a result of the change. Windows only looks for keys it knows… when it's looking for the MachineThrottling key Windows doesn't notice that there is a key with the same name but with an added underscore so it just thinks that key doesn't exist.

The solution works because the MachineThrottling key does exist (but it shouldn't), not because there is supposed to be a key called _MachineThrottling.

I have been having this problem too since december sometime. it seems as if the .msi file does not exist. the log reports indicate that either there is some part of a hotkey or maybe even a program left somewhere on the computer. i find a number of programs i use like adobe's PDF maker just dont work - looking for htis windows instller that just isnt there yet the program is installed.
one log messge i have indicates that the problem might have occurred when i was installing CA antivirus. i unistalled that. but no that didnt work. the log file on that indicates that it might be a fragment of something else ... no idea how to figure that out....
when i opne messenger i get this same thing that the msi isnt where it should be... it isnt there at all.... any one out there figured out when and how this thing happens... but more important... how do i get my msi back where it belongs..... and working....

i installed windows install clean up - used that to unistall the problem program which at that time was windows live. (becasue the .msi was corrupted or missing the program would not uninstall) i then re installed windows live. i had the same issue with some other programs that relied on windows installer (.msi was corrupted or missing) and the same remedy worked.

my research indicated that because some moron IT (meaning Idiot Technician) dude had loaded onto my computer his illegal version of office from some pirating software he was using he had it seems either removed or corrupted .msi

i found the clean up tool on the windows web site and it is a free download ... hang about and i will go see if i can find out exactly where i got it and what i used it for.....

um nope but the program is called windows install clean up

disabling SQM might work if you dont have programs that rely on it as i do.
i am not familiar with machine throttling which i presume has to to do with the speed (throttle) at which data is processed. i think i recall something about this technique in relation to slowing down the spread of viruses and worms???
but i have not heard of it being used to reinsall a missing or corrupted .msi
what prompted you to google in machine throttling in relation to installer crashes.
i haev also heard changing the hot key would fix it but if you are using registered software this will not help at all.
this whole issue for me started when two things happend simultanously ... microsoft upgrade and an idiot it professional removed my legiti office 2003 and replaced it with a pirated one (god only knows why) and did this dodgy install by creating a virtual drive to install it to. this is how he corrupted the the .msi and with the update from microsoft suddenly going off about legit software....
that is how and why i eventually found the microsoft free down load.
and yes like a lot of others with this problem the log files kept pointing to .dll files as having issues but again these are all about installs.
i just thought i should let others know what worked for me and why i rejected some of the solutions offered.
