Upgrade windows 2008 domain to windows 2008 R2

Hi,
We have server with 2008 Enterprise , x64 domain and now want to upgrade to 2008 R2 Enterprise x64
We have following member of the 2008 domain.
- SharePoint 2010
- Exchange 2010
- TFS 2010
- SQL 2008
- Additional 2008 domain controller at remote site.
We know that it can be upgrade using in-place or using FSMO role transfer.
But what will be best method to upgrade without any conflict and with all member servers working fine.

Hi Prakash,
It is recommended to install a new Windows 2008 R2 server in your domain.
Once you have prepared your schema using ADPREP, promote this server as DC.
Transfer the FSMO roles.
Are you planning to have both your DC's as 2008 R2, or just one.
I don't think there will be any issues with the applications running in your environment, as your Domain remains the same.

Hello,
in-place or FSMO role transfer is not really correct as upgrade description. Hopefully the DCS are NOT running any of the mentioned applications.
For DCs it is really easy for upgrade, just install another OS DC to the domain and transfer the FSMO roles, reconfigure the time service and you are done. Steps you can use from the following article, steps are the same just replace 2003 with 2008:

Hi,
Whether the Windows 2008 that have those applications installed was your DC? If not, then in-place upgrade for your Widnows 2008 DC is fine. If not, then please don't.
As there are Exchange and SQL and so many applications was installed on the Windows 2008 DC, so I would like suggest you not do in-place upgrade. The best way is add a new Windows 2008 R2 DC. And then transfer those roles to your Windows 2008 R2 DC. I have to say that Exchage and some other applications are not suggestted installed on DC.

Hi Yan,
No, All the Applications are installed in different Server for each application.
So I have only DC with DHCP role only.
also We have so many GPOs Do i need to consider it before upgrading.

Hello,
DHCP on DCs is not recommended, better use member servers.
For GPOs you just have to configure settings for the new OS machines from the newest one with RSAT tools, GPMC. Lower OS versions are not able to configure settings for newer ones, the other way around is of course posssible.

Hello,
of course you can do it and it is full supported from Microsoft. As long as the existing server has the Windows server 2008 64bit edition installed, which you already confirmed at the beginning.

My prodcution 2008 server is in Citrix Xen VM
Can upgrade it with 2008 R2 do i need consider any thing before upgrade like uninsta\upgrade xen tools, Newtwork Driver ..etc.

Since you are using VMs, why don't you create a new VM for Windows 2008 R2, instead of doing an inplace upgrade.

In-place upgrade doesn't change anything from the application perspective until application say its not been supported on this OS. It is always better & recommended to test the doubt in the lab because each one has different environment & what is supposed to work for them might not work for you.
You have already tested one of the case & you found out you are good to go, repeat the same for others even.
