Windows 2003 File Re-direction - over WAN
- Here is the setup. Currently we have 20+ locations worldwide. With T1, cable or DSL access with a p2p or VPN client for access into the network.
I just upgraded to new servers for the data so I could backup the users information the laptops (most of our computers are laptops) from the my documents folder. Currently people burn info onto CDs or USB drives. I want to set up the direction to the users home drive on the server (hosted solution), but with the speed and the information size, i am afraid this will slow down the users in the worst manner.
What are the options or what can be done to ensure that the speed is not effected? I need to secure the organizations data better that it is now.

Hello RW,
You may configure folder redirection to redirect the My Documents folder of the clients to a users home drive on the server.

As the redirected shell folders such as My Documents is automatically made available offline in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Generally speaking, if the centralized server and the client is connect with high-speed stable network connection, the speed should not be affected more by the folder redirection. If the network bandwidth is slow, user operation on these redirected folders may be affected. Therefore, for performance consideration in this case if there are lot of files in the My Document on the client side, we do not suggest you redirect the client side folder to a file server which is connected with slow network.
