WSUS and Updates via VPN

    Frage

  • Hello,

The way I currently have WSUS setup is that only our desktop computers, which never move from the office, receive updates with WSUS, and our Laptops, which are constantly moving, which is about 10-15 total systems, receive updates automatically from Microsoft themselves.

I was wondering, since our laptops use VPN to access our internal network, can I somehow setup the laptops to automatically download and receive updates that I myself deploy to our desktops if they are on the VPN? Will it be the same process that I am currently doing for the desktop clients?

    Absolutely.

It can be, but it may not be the optimal solution as it would require those notebooks to be continually connected to the VPN until the update files have downloaded, which also means the update files are being downloaded over the VPN connection.

The conventional way this is handled is by setting up a replica server without a local content store. Because it's just a replica without content for 15 clients, you can easily put this on a minimally configured virtual machine. This will cause the clients to download the update files from Microsoft (but still get approvals according to your specifications). Because the update files are not dependent on the VPN connection, the client systems can continuously download those files across whatever type of Internet connection might be available at the moment.
