Updating to SP1 and the latest CU - What steps to follow?

    Frage

  • Hi,

If I wanted to update my SharePoint Server farm to SP1 and the February 2012 CU, should I follow the following steps?

    1. Run SharePoint Foundation SP1 installer (KB 2460058)
    2. Run the SharePoint Server SP1 installer (KB 2460045)
    3. Run the SharePoint Server February 2012 CU (KB2597150)
      1. I’m assuming I don’t need to run the June 2011 CU’s because the February 2012 Server CU will include the June CU?
      2. And I don’t need to install the February 2012 Foundation CU before doing the February 2012 Server CU?
    4. Reboot the server
    5. Run the Configuration Wizard
    6. Restart the User Profile Synchronization Service

Your help will be much appreciated.

  • Those steps are correct, the February 2012 update contains the June 2011 update as it is a cumulative update. I don't think rebooting the server is necessary however because all necessary services (timer service, IIS, etc) will be restarted during the configuration wizard run.

If you use language packs, don't forget to install service pack 1 for them too. For each language there is a Foundation and a Server package.

What about Language Packs that are released after SP1 release date. What is the installation order then? SP2010 -> SP1 -> Languag Packs -> Feb 2012 CU?

  • Service packs don't contain all languages, but cumulative updates do. So just installing the latest CU patches all installed languages. That's the reason cumulative hotfixes are that big in size btw.
