Backup error

When I am trying to backup files on Windows 7 keep getting error code 0x800703EE. Runs about 48 percent of back up then stops running and then
gett error messGE.

Running 64-bit Vista Ultimate SP1 on a Dell Precision 390 desktop (fast Core 2 Duo X6800, 4GB Ram)

This happens to me two or three times in a typical day using Vista on this machine. I will be using some application - it seems that almost any application may be affected - and it will suddenly become unresponsive. If I click on the application's window again, it displays "(not responding)" in the title bar. Sometimes the application's window becomes 'greyed out'.

If I click on another application's window, sometimes it works normally but often it also locks up. If I click some application in the task bar, it will not restore the application's window; instead the whole thing (Windows Explorer, I am guessing) becomes unresponsive. The mouse may continue to move but no mouse clicks are processed. Icons in the tray, like that for TaskManager, do not update.

After being frozen like this for maybe 30 seconds, everything returns to normal. Usually several windows suddenly come to the front, as though some of those lost mouse-clicks are now being acted upon.

The applications that may show the "(not responding)" in their title bar seem to include almost anything. I have seen it happen on Outlook, Word, Firefox, VMWare Workstation, Google Chrome. So I suspect the problem is not with any particular application but something about the Explorer desktop or Vista's handling of its message queues.

I have not been able to detect any particular conditions that trigger the behavior. The system has 4GB RAM which is plenty for the set of applications that I usually run. There does not seem to be any application consuming the CPU.

I searched the event viewer but cannot find anything interesting at the times corresponding to the problem.

Vista SP2 Installation Error "SMI primitive installer failed"

When I first tried to install SP2, it failed with an error code 8007371C. I found a posting here about using the System Update Readiness Tool and the full standalone package of SP2 after that. Followed the posting exactly, but even after that the installation failed saying "The SMI primitive installer failed during setup or servicing." This is a Sony laptop, running Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

I've had this error code for months now, I've searched all over and even tried a few recommendations, nothing worked. I was happy to see that SP1 was finally available, after searching for how to install that too, I finally found it, but wouldn't you know, I guess I can't install it because of the same error... using the windows update utility I can't install ANY update!!! Very frustrating, my USB port isn't quite working 100%, I saw a patch for that too, for the stack, but no, I can't even install that because my windows updater is all messed up or something. If anyone can help me with this it would be very much appreciated. I'm about to go back to XP any day now if I can't get this going....

SSDP Discovery Service and network problems in windows 7 over wifi

I am Writing in to try to figure out why the "SSDP Discovery Service" is constantly flooding my network with requests.... so much so I think that it is cause resolution errors... with DNS servers on my network here is the copy text from my Outpost firewall after 3 hours usage.

There is no other computers networked to this one however I do use wifi. I checked to see that options to "automatically switch to a better connection" was off it was. I try to disable the uPnP and SSDP Service and lost all connectivity as well. But it seems since I the last couple of months with Vista then a totally clean install of Win7 I have had about 30-40% resolution errors only with this computer finding websites. My latency for such games went from a typical 62-74ms to a 594-694ms while logging in. If there is no way to disable this constant flooding of broadcasts I might return windows and switch a different platform. Finally I never mention I am not using this in network sharing fashion such as files, being able to log into other pc's just as a wireless PC.

Finally off subject After the clean install i continue to try to pull files and delete the Windows.old folder it will not let me. I am the Admin of this computer and when I try to run Explorer as with Admin Credentials it asks for my password and does not accept the Password I gave with my credentials. Some help would be greatly accept. Finally in the 5 minutes it took me to write this post Bytes Sent from the SSDP Service count is 10mb in 5 minutes. THIS UNACCEPTABLE NO MATTER WHAT THE REASON .

Vista Ultimate 32bit SP2 fails at step 3 after 40 mins install and two restarts

I have tried installing SP 2 on two different occasions with the same result as most people are having in this thread, failed after step 3 100%, reverting to previous state. This is the third major problem I am experiencing all related to installing W7. I have tried and failed to create a backup of my machine with an error message that gives no useful info. I have tried to upgrade to W7 ultimate as I was advised by the MSFT upgrade manager but again failed with a useless error message and now this. This to me is an unacceptable level of errors for a commercial product to be released to public. I have by the way paid full price for each version of the OS's. I do see some solutions out there that are also shooting in the dark and sometime work sometimes not. If this was W7 I would understand there being some issues out there early on that the coders did not close out during developement. But this is Vista, several years released and a SP is realeased without proper testing and open ended errors. I should not have to invest this much time to try to install a new software product that I have paid for. Microsofts approach that users will research problems and when they reach a critical level will then address them is lame. I am awaiting a solution now on three different forums for issues I believe should not exist if good coding was used before release. I wait a response to this, and Re-arming as many people have said is not an option.

Unable to install Vista Service Pack 2

I've seen that others have had issues with this, as well. Upon trying to use Windows Update or the standalone SP2, I get the same error:

ERROR_NOT_FOUND(0x80070490)

I tried running the System Update Readiness tool, and that didn't solve my problem. However, I have uploaded the log files and the CBS.log to my public SkyDrive for viewing, if there's someone who could look at them and help me out. Let me know if there are any other files needed for analysis. Thanks very much!

System halts in boot after installation SP1: !! 0xc0000034 !!

I installed SP1 on a Vista Ultimate Machine (laptop). The installation seemed to run correct, but after the first reboot, the system is not starting up, but a black screen woth white text shows a counter running from 1/73065 to 64583/73065 and showing all kind of system files and registry entries. It halts at 64583/73-65, with this error:

What is going wrong? I waited for 3 hours, but nothing happens. Restarting shows the same behaviour. Tried to repair, but, though the repair option from the (technet) installation media show a restore point and says that it is restoring files, it seems to hang in finalizing restore (also waited for some hours).

What can I do to resolve this?

hey all new here and almost puter illiterite.

i need help on how i know what version of the sp2 update i need, its got ISO, x64 etc etc listed and i have no idea what i need for my laptop and were can i find the info on my laptop.

also i have call of duty modern warfare had it for a while and ave just put up with the slowish jittery action it has. My current base score rating is 3.2 the game requires 4.1 and it recommends 5.3, how can i improve this is there downloads i can use to improve it.

also my lappy isnt connected to the net but can i save these to a flash drive and transfer them to my laptop.

Having just purchased a Windows 7 upgrade I was very disappointed that it would not load. The reason was no SP1 and I cannot get my computer to load SP1 due to Error 80070002. Why is this not mentioned to buyers before they buy Windows 7? Why wont SP1 load? Do I now have to pay more money to have SP1 loaded? Why?

Outlook 2003 not working - Vista;

This is the second time this has happened to me, the last time I uninstalled the prior microsoft updates and it went away, so now back again - Outlook 2003 will not open... comes up with prompt box to say that Outlook has stopped working then a second box pops up stating = "A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Events leading upto issue.
Had registered new web URL with www.NetworkSolutions.com and was using their email
wizard to set up account... have used this several times before with no issues.

and 2, Installed Vista upgrade pack #2.

What I've tried.
Tried uninstalling updates... won't allow the upgrade pack to uninstall.
Tried opening Outlook in SafeMode.... crashed straight away. Also disabled all startup programs at Run / MSCONFIG

Also tried turning on DEP [Data Execution Prevention] for all programs execpt for MS Outlook as it was on for all.

None of this worked.

The last time this happened I was able to restore to the last install date... However I can no longer go back beyond todays date for what ever the reason.

Is it possible that the networksolutions add-on is causing this...?? I'm not sure how to view this / remove, it is not running at startup.. Is it possible that it is running via the registry?

After looking at event viewer I can find following events what can be problem ?

yea there are alot of this but haven't found one with this problem and i wonder if its sp2 fault .

noticed watching videos on the net the sound was chugging more then normal. not a modems problem do to the fact that my music is doing in now too.

i have tried updating my audio drivers and updated my video players nothing works. haven't tried a game to check if audio is choppy there to

I found where if your CPU is showing around a 50% utilization, you need to check "Disable all Enhancements" box in the sound panel. I did that but I had to reboot to get my CPU back to normal.

If the process is really checking to see if you have any enhancements turned on, why in the world would it need 43% CPU utilization to do that. If this is an error, and it must be, since it has been around for a while, why has it not been fixed in the RC? To me, this would seem to be a high priority item.

I have aHP DV6000tx, with window vista, brought 2 and half yaer back. Just few days back, i was not able to boot. When i try to boot in safe mode, it hangs on crcdisk.sys and when i recovered my data by taking out the hard drive, the system recovery drive show no file, but its size show 5-6 GB. What exacly is the problem and what can i do? Please advice

FYI for anyone who is installing Vista SP1 - I just installed it on one of my machines, and after the initial reboot, the machine hung at "Configuring Updates Step 3 of 3 - 0% Complete" indefinitely. No disk access...no sign of life. After reading the posts in another thread, I rebooted with the intention of doing a system restore. To accomplish this, I booted into Safe mode. Immediately upon booting into safe mode, the upgrade continued as if nothing had happened, and has since installed itself perfectly.

Thought I'd pass it on in case it helps out anyone else.

I installed the RTM Vista SP1 from the DVD ISO on my Vista Ultimate system, left the system alone while I went to the movies and came home to find it done and waiting for me. Or so I thought.

As soon as I launched Outlook 2007 it opens up and before it displays my messages I get the OS pop-up saying Outlook failed to respond and has to close. There are no add-on programs in Outlook 2007.

This is a serious ***-up if the Service Pack is going to break other Microsoft Software such as the Office suite which many businesses use. If I can't find a solution by the end of the weekend I am going to be forced to wipe the machine and just reload XP, ignoring Vista from here on out. Microsoft has zero credibility left with me and my company after this final issue.

Try this: select file inside any folder in Microsoft Windows Explorer. Then move mouse around window. Press Del button. Note that file still looks selected. However Vista deletes the whole folder instead of selected file! I loss a lot of information this way. What the fuxxing developers work in Microsoft!!! They could not even fix this bug for several years!

Since installing Service Pack 2 my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop has been running slower - especially noticeable when using CS4. Wish I hadn't bothered - was running fine before. Anyway I can either fix this or uninstall SP2?

Vista 32bit Service Pack 2 Failing to install

I attempted to install SV2 using windows update. It completed saying it was successfull but never rebooted my computer and only took 4 minutes. So I rebooted my machine and checked the Service Pack version. It's still SV1. So I downloaded Service Pack 2 manually and attempted to install it. It keeps telling me I need to install SV1... I've had SV1 installed for a very long time. Any Idea how to actually get Service Pack 2 to install without rebuilding my computer??

PS: After working with MS tech support for a couple of days, I still couldn't get SP2 to load. I have since given up trying to get SP2 to install.. and given up on VISTA all together. I'm am currently using Windows 7 RC and so far I'm pretty happy with it. Sorry to abandon you guys... but I was wasting way to much time trying to install something that should have just worked.

I obtain this error situation just after boot-up. I have read and carefully followed the advice and information contained on the 'Technet' information page concerning this. All the required permissions are in place for the Registration folder. vssadmin list writers does not have 'system writer' included in the list. I presume this error will continue if this is not the case and although there seems to be no problem with my system restore and system repair functions, I would prefer to remove this error. What must I do to place 'system writer' back onto the approved list. Any help would be much appreciated.

Is there anyway to save my files and programs when in this state?

But I have many important files, pictures, and programs that I would like to keep.
Is there absolutely any way to recover them, without buying a ton of installation ____?

Vista SP1 wont install, error 800B0100

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any progress in finding the remedy to this particular error. I've read in other places that this is caused by a missing signature. When I try to download SP1 through windows update it just doesn't start at all, it stays at 0% downloading and doesnt move until it fails and gives me that error. I downloaded the entire service pack as well and tried manually installing it, It gets a little over the halfway point and stops and gives me the same error. I've tried going into safe mode and trying both ways but it still does not work. Any other update will install just fine, other than 1 particular update which hasn't been able to install since 11/13/07 its Windows Update (KB941649). I've tried looking for remedies for this update as well but I haven't found it either. It gives me the same error code as SP1. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have got vista ultimate sp1, czech, and after downloading the new sp2 beta I wanteted to install it. However, the installation failed, actually didnt even start. It says error insufficient buffer (0*8007007a) and that the area for data is too small (despite having 35GB of free space on the system disk). Anyone has encoutered this issue?

Have installed sp1 v688 and not really had many problems, but there is only 1 restore point i can go to,
and if i choose a different restore point, there is no Show Restore Points Older Than 5 Days check box.

Windows Vista will not install updates. I believe i have the S.P.2 already installed. Windows Defender constantly comes up as failing to initialize when i start up (i have found a related answer in the forums to do with Defender clashing with Mcafee virus software). I sometimes have problems with Mcafee virus protection that willnot "fix" when selected & will not manually scan either. My computer repeatedly crashes or restarts, or I.E. stops working. My google sidebar fails to startup occasionally. My Dell dock also fails. I am having trouble with various hardware. Such as my DVD/CD device willnot start because "configuration info. (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged", yet when i check driver updates they are up to date & if i change boot settings to boot from my DVD/CD drive it does. My sound has twice stopped working for no apparent reason. I also have occasional problems with various USB devices (MP3 players, USB flash drives, mobile phones etc) no matter which USB port i use. A couple of times my keyboard has stopped working. Sometimes i have to download drivers to use them, when they used to already be installed & i could plug in and use these devices instantly. The list goes on!!!
I have had to do a system restore to an earlier backup point just to get the system to run, yet i still have most of these problems. The hard drive &/or fans sometimes make strange noises now too. I fear it is only a matter of time befor something really bad happens :-(
I have spoken to Dell support (who i found quite unhelpful!) & all they could suggest is a complete system restore.
I dont want to do a complete system restore, as i am unable to backup my personal files (such as photos & music) because my DVD/CD drive is not being detected & either will a USB flash drive when plugged in. If I could at least backup my photos etc, onto DVD/CD i would feel a bit safer to maybe try a complete system restore, or any other solution anyone may have.

I attempted to upgrade my SP1 Vista x64 business install to SP2. The upgrade failed with an unspecified error.

Since that time I have tried to install a Visual C++ 2005 redistributable. This fails with a similar error code, I suspect the issues may be related. The failed install results in the following entry in the CBS log,

my laptop computer was totally Software wreck because by virus attack! those i forgot to update my AVAST Anti virus,before the virus attack i was able to download already the Windows Vista Service pack 1 when my computer was rid of the virus i tried to install the service pack and it failed the message : some updates where not installed ( WindowsUpdate_00000643" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"), those i can not figure out what's that? or there are some problems?

Help! Vista x64 WinRE Recover Partition

Allright guys, I'm pretty savvy, but have limited experience with boot information. I want to create a recovery partition for my Vista x64, using the complete pc backup in the control panel. I've created a WinRE image, and I know how to integrate it into my F8 menu, but only from the c: drive. What I need to know, and where my knowledge is lacking, is how to boot from another partition without any of the boot record being on the root partition. Let's say I have a partition: Recovery [R:]. I need it to be COMPLETELY self-sufficient. I want WinRE on r: and I want it to boot from r:, not from c:.

The point is to be able to completely overwrite every other partition, including c:. If I'm booting WinRE from the c: drive, then the restore won't work because I'd be trying to overwrite WinRE's boot information, which would be in use. I have a 500Gb SATA hard drive partitioned as follows: Vista [C:] @ 120Gb, Data [F:] @ 300Gb, and Recovery [R:] @ about 40Gb, all in that order. Do I need to move the recovery partition so that it's before c:, or can I leave it where it is? What is the Mb/cylinder limit to where a partition is no longer bootable? I can resize r: down to under 20Gb if I need to.

What I DON'T need:

-I don't need any suggestions on third party partitioning programs. I have Acronis, but I only want to use Vista's built-in app.

-I don't need any suggestions to boot from the cd. I already know I can boot from the setup disc, I don't want to do that.

-Also, I don't need any suggestions to back up to DVD's, I don't want to do that either.

Basically, if you're not answering any of the specific questions above, then you're not helping. I know what I want to do, I just need some help on how to do it correctly. Thanks again!
