Answered Need to configure Hardware Loadbalancer on Lync Front end server

    Hello Team,

    We are inphase of implementing 2 Lync Front End server for redundancy. Hence we have procurred Hardware Loadbalancer.

    I want to know how to move forward..Thought to go below step but not sure how to do loadbalance with 2 Front End lync server

    1. Preparing schema, forest and domain
    2. Installing topology builder in the lync server
    3. The creating pool e.g Lyncpool01.example.com
    4. Creating dns host record for Lyncpool01.example.com
    5. Then adding the Lync Front end server1 in the topology builder
    6. Then adding the Lync Front end server2 in the topology builder
    7. Creating dns host record for Lync Front end server1
    8. Creating dns host record for Lync Front end server2

    Now my challenge after doing this how to do loadbalance...?

    Will be a best pratice to have poolname and servername as same..?

    Whether i need to create two pool to do hardware load balancer..mapping one server on each poolname ?

    Hi,

    1. Point the DNS record lyncpool01.example.com to LB VIP.
    2. Add server1, server 2 as member server in the LB pool context.
    3. Make sure that LB is able to communicate with frontend servers on required ports.
    4. Configure required probing on the LB for service availability.
    5. Lync standard edition , pool name would be the FQDN of the server. But Lync enterprise setup with HLB , you can point pool FQDN to HLB VIP for load balencing.
    6. You don't need to create two pool to setup HLB.

    Hi,

    Agree with saleesh another way of doing HLB with Lync is as follows, it is up to you either you want to load balance every thing with HLB then go with Saleesh if you only want to do HLB for Lync web requests then do the following:

    1. Create A record for FE1

    2. Create A record for FE2

    3. Enable DNS Load Balancing option from the DNS

    4. Create two pool A records lyncpool01.domain.com and point to the IP address of FE 1 and FE2

    5. in the topology builder when it asks for the Lync internal and external url click on the override and then type lyncweb-int.domain.com and in the external field type lyncweb-ext.domain.com (these urls can be changed according to your naming standard and these records will help lync users to download address book and group expensions)

    6. Create A records in internal DNS for meet.domain.com, admin.domain.com, dialin.domain.com and lyncweb-int.domain.com point to the HLB VIP.

    7. configure the HLB so that when ever request comes it should send to FE1 or FE2

    Hi,

    It is recommended using DNS Loard Balancers for SIP  traffic and using Hard Loard balancers for Http or Https traffic to Lync FE server. It will reduce the work load of Hard Load Balancers.
