    Using IE8 only can the background color\texture of each site page be changed? (Or is SharePoint Designer required to do this? If so, please drop a hint as to how this is done)

    Themes apply at the site level (and can only do colors). You are going to have to use SharePoint designer and some CSS to make each site page have a different color/background.
