- I'm running a triple-monitor setup on Win7 x64. Primary card is NVidia Quadro FX 1400 dual DVI output PCI Express x16 and secondary card is GeForce FX 5200 PCI with a single DVI output.
When the displays go dark for a UAC prompt, they should return to normal after the prompt is acknowledged. However, the display connected to the secondary card stays completely black, but the pointer will still display normally when moved to that display. Simply clicking on the black area will cause the background to reappear as normal.

- 1) Microsoft Money Plus 2008 Deluxe refuses to activate in Windows 7 RC if the user account does not have administrative privileges.2) There is no UAC pop-up requesting administrator privileges.3) The error message offers no clue about the need for administrator privileges. It just says to check the activation code and the Internet connection.The problem can be worked around by temporarily granting administrator privileges to the user account, and then activating Money Plus.

Only way I can play internet radio via media centre now is to start it in media player, save the playlist with that radio and then start that playlist in media centre. Works 90% of the time. Can we have internet radio tab under radios in MC? Some most popular radios and a http line so we can start our own radio.

- We Have Media Player, Media Center and Zune. For Zune Software and media center, Most of the things there can be on Windowsmedia.com and the rest can be built into windows media player. There are too many media apps to be able to do everything. I am sure we could buy songs online in media player from the zune web site as well as get to internet tv and so on.

- I am very dissapointed that Media Center does not fully support Aero Snap. It is one of those applications that many people use on dual screen set ups or split screen setups.
I often want to watch TV full screen on one monitor and work on the other one. But full screen means the mouse is captured by Media Center so you can't work on the other screen.
Now this issue has been reported since Vista and yet Microsoft have not decided to change it for Windows 7! Very dissapointing given all the hype about Aero Snap and the fluent user interface.
It is also annoying that the mute audio button in media center mutes every single other application too. It should only mute Media Center! Again dissapointing.

- two major problems:
1/I have moved my library paths for photos video and music to my D:\Media\xxxx directory (where xxx is the type), and removed the default path for the %profile%\Music and such. However when I connect my digital camera and import the photos, they still go to the C drive, and I have to move them manually (worse still, some of them have strange permissions which means I can't delete from the original location).
2/ On several occations I have noticed "web urls" in the address bar for my imported media, by web URLS, I mean spaces seperated by %13 etc.....

- Good idea! I'd like it to be easy as WinAmp is for this...
- I know when I am home I watch a movie a day but that is what 100 min average rest of that time it is winamp with internet radio, even when I play my xx3. Having that in MCE would allow to control it with remote, save the best stations. Ahh it just would be great.

- Can you give some examples of "other codecs"?
I have used Xvid/Divx with MP3/AC3 and H264 with AAC without issues. I've actually been VERY happy with W7 and WP12 as far as video/audio support. - So, they added some new games to the Microsoft list, but got rid of Texas Hold'em?...
is there a way to get this little extra on Windows 7?

- In several this forum's threads (most notably the "Win 7 RC Comments pt. 1/2/3") a lot of people have been asking for this menu, which used to be accessible via Right-Clicking on the taskbar icon, but now that results in the Jump List:
First of all I want to explain that this menu does exist in Windows 7, as you can clearly see in the above screenshot. You can open it via Shift+Right Click on the taskbar icon.
But that's all I wanted to say, so here goes.
This menu has existed since Windows 95, as has been one other feature:
- Click on a taskbar item to focus on that window
- Click again to minimize that window
And Close can be achieved both via Jump Lists and Live Thumbnails .
So where's the problem?

- Can we start a petition to remove WLAN Autoconfig from Windows 7 and go back to separating the Wireless Network services like XP? Please?
I don't see why nothing is being done about one of the more serious complaints and annoyances reported by users of Vista. The "optimization" feature (that causes huge lag spikes in online gaming) should be able to be successfully disabled if not split into a completely serparate service, which can be disabled. I know this doesn't affect everyone nor every piece of hardware, but it really hurts a ton of people who want to play online games with a wireless connection.
I do not see a suggestions forum, but trust me, I have sent feedback on this every time I got extremely frustrated trying to play online. - I've been trying to get my W7 RC x64 (clean install) to connect to my Cisco 3000 concentrator at work. I found that Cisco STILL refuses to make a 64bit VPN client! #$%^ers! I finally found a client that supposedly would work under 64bit W7. it's called NCP something-or-other (www.ncp-e.com). Installed beautifully, but I could seem to get it to actually connect to anything... Bummer... Decided to uninstall it and try just setting up a good ol pptp connection using the W7 native VPN capabilities...
Not sure if it's something on my system (maybe that Citrix DNE update from my attempt at the Cisco client), or what, but if I try to establish the connection, I get the "Verifying username and password" dialog indefinately. The networking tray icon shows the swirling blue circle, as if it's attempting to connect. I've waited 10 minutes and still nothing changes, so I click Cancel on the dialog box. It goes away, but the swirling circle remains until I reboot the system.
Any ideas?
Hey Microsoft! If a company abandons their client, can you then take their abilities and incorporate them directly without having to license? Cisco has abandoned all 64bit people (I don't count that Connect Anywhere or AnyConnect bull$%!@)? Please give us a NATIVE Windows 7 64bit client that will, maybe, read in Cisco .pcf files and configure itself to use IPSec and all that! - Installed Win7, NIC shows local access but no internet access,
I have a DHCP router with DSL ISP, all in a workgroup home environment, my other XP clients work fine,
if I try to setup the network connection and select internet, only get 2 choices, pppoe or dialup, my pppoe resides on the dsl modem and don't need to setup on pc,
I did try setting it on the pc, however it did not help.

- Hey Guy,s I have a problem when I trying to pair my dell bh200 bluetooth headset makes it perfectly but when I look for it, is not listed in playback devices, I like Windows 7 and use a dell xps 420 with the dell wireless 355c bluetooth 2.0 + EDR module and I also use bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I try everything to fix the problem (Broadcom driver for win 7, dell drivers, even win vista drivers) but nothing works. Now a few days ago the bluetooth thing started with a new problem now I can't transfer photos and music from my pc to any phone and vice versa, which is so annoying and disappointed. Now tired of trying everything I have decided go back to Visa and It Works great!!! I hope Microsoft is aware of this irritating problem cuse I really want to use Windows 7.

- I agree 100%. I am so used to 15 years to right clicking and quickly clicking Close, Maximize or Minimize. Either we should be given a choice to revert to this menu without using Shift or put Minimize and Maximize in the jump list. - How about adding min/max to the jump list, but keeping it in one row? Like this:
These buttons would work on all that app's windows, and for individual windows there's always right-click on the thumbnail.

- One of the cool features of Windows 7, is the way it organizes all open windows by the application that opened those windows. Very nice!So, what you are looking for is there, they have just moved it under each application for the group of files that are opened.Now, something that I would like to do, but have not been able to figure out is how do I view say two documents opened by MS Word and just these two, side by side?A right click on the task bar gives you the option to view windows side by side and I am aware of this, but this feature applies the logic to all open windows by all applications.I would love to see this feature to be added to the right click menu for each application, where currently we have 'close window' and 'pin this program to task bar', etc. so it would be nice to have 'view windows side by side' and 'cascase windows' added to this sub-menu.
- Hello - I am using Windows 7 RC on two machines, a desktop and a laptop. Each have Pentium D dual core processors and 2gb of RAM.
Here are the issues I am having ;
- Media Center in Windows 7 crashes, BSODS. I download a free DVD player and it works flawlessly.
- Media Center when you right click, you get this stupid ribbon ____. In Vista, you right click and you get a menu with options to Eject, Title Menu or Root Menu. Windows 7 Media Center when you right click you have to scroll all the way to the end of this freaking ribbon to get those option. This sucks.
- Windows 7 VPN - SUCKS!. I take my laptop out to other sites and have all sorts of connectivity problems with the VPN. Constantly disconnects and won't reconnect. My Windows XP laptop works fine on other sites. Windows 7 VPN will work fine if I'm connected to my network, then whats the freaking point, I'm behind a firewall. I need a reliable VPN when I'm out on remote sites. Thank God for Windows XP's VPN reliability.
- Media Center. You put in a DVD and there is no default settings in Windows 7 to say Media Center is the default player when a DVD is put into the drive. Don't give me directions to control panel to make those changes, I have done all that plus used the wizard to setup the default player and my two options is Media Player (great for music, not movies) and the free DVD player I downloaded so I can watch movies with a media player that works. No settings in Windows 7 to set Media Center as default player for DVD's, not an option in the drop down menu.
- Network Printers. That wizard is still a joke. Vista and Windows 7 will not find any of my 4 network print servers automatically. You run the freaking wizard and it tells you there is nothing there. I manually put in the IP address and guess what, it finds it. Get rid of the wizard, save some code and speed if it won't work.

You can also look on my signature, that system runs surprisingly well, too. But the freedom of belief is a constitutional right in most countries, today.

Also, I have embedded cover art in all my mp3s but WMP doesn't recognize any of them - Hi thanks for reading my post.
Normally when you share a folder in windows it it changes the icon so you can tell its shared.

- 1. In XP and Vista I could right-click on a taskbar program, press the C key, and the program would close. Now its right-click, hit C (several times if the program had recent files that started with "C"), and then press <Enter> to do the same thing. Gets annoying when I try to close 20+ windows.
2. Vertical taskbars are still not done well, but its getting much better than XP or Vista. The clock takes 3 lines when it could fit everything on 1.
3. There should be a setting to allow the display of seconds in the taskbar clock, or even better, the ability to enter custom time format string for power users.
Finally, thank you Windows 7 developers for adjusting the list view in Windows Exporer to allow for column widths that adjust for content, and dont just use the width of the widest column. This has been needed for a long time. Really, this is a very good new feature, thanks, dev. team.
But, about the list view, I would like to remind about a new behaviour that is not good at all: The "moving columns" when a file name is not able to show itself fully.
For me, it can even be classified as a bug, and the steps to reproduce it are:
Open any folder in windows explorer and use the "List" view. Now, go to the far right column and select one file. IF the last column visible have one file name that is near the end of the window, or if the name of one file in that column don´t fit the window, then, when you select it, explorer move it "automagicaly" maybe to let you "see better" the file name.
BUT, it´s really annoying, because:
1) You can SEE the file. You click the file and suddenly all the columns change and the one that was right under your mouse now is not the one that was under your mouse. It is now in the left of your mouse, and the next column in the right, that you was not even seeing (and maybe have nothing you wanted, because you don´t clicked it) is now under the mouse.
2) It´s impossible to do a double click in a file like this (one that is in the last right column in the list view, the same column that will move by itself when you select the file) before the column moves. Even if you try to double click real fast, you end clicking another file, because when you do the first click, the column already moved, the file you wanted is not under your mouse pointer anymore, and the secound click (just a milisecound was passed here) will end in another file.
I hope I made myself clear. It´s a issue much easyer to see in windows explorer than to explain in words, I think. Try it out and see, please.

Two months? I'm using W7 since several months. RC haven't changed the rgistry. Anyway, I installed and deinstalled a lot of programs (we are beta testers, dont you?) and W7 is going slower and if you search the registry you can see a lot of garbage. - It's not even a problem of two months. I've installed the Beta on a virtual drive, run the RC from a real, separate drive = not containing any rests from the Beta, and the responsiveness goes down with every install/uninstall. The two months aren't over, if you count a bit.

I have a few general comments on Win 7 RC.
1. Seems more stable and reliable, especially compared to the Vista RC that I also tested when released.
2. Clean installs have gone well, both 32 and 64 bit editions. All hardware recognized and installed, even on an old ratty box that was ready for the recylce bin.
3. Windows Defender has gotten weaker in each build. The software Explorer is gone and we're back to the command line and msconfig to edit startup items. HUGE step backwards!
4. Homegroup doesn't make sense for "typical" home users as it requires Win7 on all machines, which will never happen.
5. Mysterious and unresolved Event ID errors continue. Errors totally inscrutable and rarely any help or explanation to resolve.
6. AV installs continue to want to dominate over the OS -- want to be the default firewall, spyware checker, anti-spam, web link analyzer and so on. I see trouble down the road in the "Action Center", especially with OEM AV-Secuirty Edition bundles.
7. Interface is neither better or worse than say Vista -- just different. Still many annoying quirks -- no classic desktop, no network icon animation, IE 8 x64 does not show the history which was a much touted benefit, and so on. It's like going into the Holliday Inn that you know so well and the furniture has been moved around for unknown benefits.
While I appreciate your request for comments, I think we all know that after a RC release there won't be many changes.

It worked perfectly! aparently there was a conflick with the other drives for some reason but after completing instalation, shutting down and connecting the other drives, everything works properly. So now we are off to the races and I can see it is much faster than anything previous.

- It looks like Notepad is a bit buggy when word wrap is turned on. Basically, if a long line of text is already wrapped and you change its length so that the word-wrap point changes, the text file can potentially go all wonky. You could get an extra unnecessary line break in your paragraph, or a segment of a paragraph might disappear altogether. This is purely visual, because saving, closing, and reopening the text file shows the intact text with the correct changes made to it. But it sure gives you a shock to see it happen. Using the 64-bit version.

there is a strange bug on pinning executables to the taskbar:
> when the filename contains the word "help" the command "pin to taskbar" has gone in popup menu.
> when the file information contains the word "help" (filename is different) the program can be pinned but loose the pinned state when it's closed
I tested this with build 7100 64bit and 32bit, build 7000 32bit.

Great work on Windows 7, love it. Im using Windows 7 now and Im gonna keep it simple and hope someone reads this.
One: I have always wanted to see since 95 is the ability to use media as background on your desktop (example, repeating avi of an ocean scene or waves crashing on the shore). Also have the ability to set volume or mute.
Two: I Swap monitors all the time (different locations). These monitors have different screen sizes and its a hassle to always reposition my icons and Gadgets on the larger resolutions. Just remember the locations in the Registry or some ini file for that specific resolution.

- What about Workgroups ? By mistake I've created 2 workgroups in my network (keyboard mistake - typed a different letter ). Normally I should be able to see only my workgroup computers, and just the name for the second one, but not acces. I see nowhere the workgroups names, but just a list including all the computers in both workgroups. So why there is still the posibility to change the workgroup name when it doesn't do it's job ?
- I have noticed 2 things with Win 7 coming from XP.1. Occasionally IE8 will not start. I have it in the Startup list, and on my taskbar, but no matter how often I click the icon, it will not open. Task manager shows it briefly with 180,000 useage, but then it disappears. Gone back to Chrome. No change 4/jul/092. iTunes 7 (and 8?-not tested) under XP allowed me to drag a .JPG from the desktop to the "album Art" space in the info window of a song (or group of songs). Under Win7 this no longer works. It simply does not allow it for a song (showing a prohibited cursor). But if you select a group of songs, and click show info, the copy cursor appears when you drag a .JPG to the "album Art" space in the info window, and the .JPG is placed in the window (just as it did under XP). BUT when you now click OK - nothing happens.UPDATE 4 jul/09: Although drag and drop doesn't work anymore, it appears you can still update album artwork for a single song using a seperate tab in the "info" window , For multiple tunes, by ticking the box next to "artwork" , and then dragging a .jpg to it, you can update multiple songs.

- Scrolling has been around for a long time and little has been done to make it better. I find it annoying when scrolling up or down a page for it to go up or down one click at a time. I know the hardware is just like any other part of the mouse and doesn't actually have physical 'clicks'. It would be nice to see a feature that you could either have traditional scrolling (with one click per line) or a continuous scroll, like on a clickless mouse or a laptop scroll area so you could scroll in very fine amounts instead of in a jumpy fashon. It would also be nice to be able to control the acceleration and scale of the scroll like any other axis of the mouse. Second issue. I've found that scroll bars can be quite annoying on a touch screen, or any other device when you are dealing with a large amount of information and the scroll bar has to be clicked on exactly. Especially my windows smartphone (non windows 7, but it still applies) It would be nice if the scroll bar would move to where you clicked if the click location wasn't on the bar itself, and if you want to scroll one line at a time, you can click on the arrows at the top or bottom. Third issue. I'm not sure if this is fully application specific or this is a windows global issue, but when you click on a menu, and then hover over a sub menu, and you have "Open submenus when I pause on them with the mouse pointer" unchecked it still opens the sub menu. This is particularly annoying in Photoshop, but again, I'm not sure if Photoshop is programmed in a way to ignore the OS settings. I appreciate the help

- It may have been mentioned in one of the previous 4 threads but in case not:
The RC RDP client (6.1.7100) is very laggy from a "feel" standpoint. In my test case the remote clipboard was broken when on the older client it worked fine. It is also, at least for me, prone to random disconnects over a VPN where the older client chugs right on through.
This needs attention before release! Many companies and their IT departments rely on Remote Desktop/Terminal Services for their day to day business!

Hello, I am just commenting that I have gotten Windows 7 to install and run successfully (and dual-boot) on an HP a1110n system, and it is surprisingly responsive. The basic system specs are
- Intel Celeron D Processor 345 (3.06GHz)
- 256KB of L2 Cache
- 533MHz FSB
- 768 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM
- Graphics Card: Intel 845 Integrated (Max 64MB shared, though has NEVER gone above using 8MB - using 6 MB right now)
- 160 GB EIDE HD
- DVD-RW drive and CD-RW drive
- 2Wire (Atheros) wireless g USB card
- No PCI-E or AGP slots
Windows Experience Index of 1.0 (due to Gaming Graphics), because processor and RAM are at 3.9, and the HD is 5.2. Installing the XP drivers for the graphics raised my Desktop Performance from 1.0 using Standard VGA acceleration to 1.9. Obviously Aero is out of the question (I think the graphics only have HW support for DX 6), but other than that it doesn't seem to choke this machine any more than XP does.
For no gaming being done, and using the machine only occasionally at that, I see no reason why throwing $40 in for a very basic graphics card couldn't keep it viable as a legacy machine while still having the latest security available.
I also have the 64-bit RC on my machine and I am very pleased with it. My WEI went down a little bit but it doesn't feel as sluggish as the Vista install, either the 32-bit or 64-bit. And though that computer isn't top-of-the-line, it is far from being a snail.

Symptoms: Unable to delete two-level nested folder from Windos Explorer folder pane.
To reproduce:
1. run Windows Explorer
2. create the following nested folder structure under Libraries/Documents/My Documents
Test
Test1
Test2
(so you've got a c:\Users\YourUserName\Documents\Test\Test1\Test2 structure)
3. now move back up to the root of the newly created structure at Test in the folder pane
4. make sure to expand the Test\Test1\Test2 structure in the folder pane
5. now right click and attempt to Delete Test
6. bug: after confirming the delete, you get a message "You'll need administrator permission to delete this folder" Test Date created: <etc>
of course, administrator rights are not required for this operation, since the user is the owner of the just created folders
even if you give admin rights to the operation, it will fail (of course)
Work around: it seems if you remove the Test2 folder in this example, you are able to then delete Test/Test1 and Test just by performing the delete on Test... something to do with more than 2 levels nested. Strange stuff here -- makes you jump into cmd.exe and do a "rmdir /s Test"
Note: this is all running as standard user.
Windows 7 RC, 32-bit, running on HP dv5t with 3GB RAM.

After further testing, I have determined this is a bug in AVG 8.5's Resident Sheild.
Turning off the Resident Shield in AVG or moving to Microsoft Security Essentials (which is what I've done) makes such problems go away...

More: When used W7 Beta I was losing the mpg and mpeg thumbnails and I have no answers. When installed the RC I recover it. Now I lose it again (at first I can see some, now none)

- I'm usually a linux user. I hated vista and thought Win7 would be very similar. In other words I expected only to hate it. I have to say though that in the time I have used it I have thought it was brilliant and will most likely buy a copy when it comes out if my one problem with it is sorted. Audio. I have searched and downloaded many, many drivers yet still audio will not work. If I can get this working I will emigrate from linux to Win7, otherwise I will not be moving.

- It seems and feels that Windows 7 has quite a bit more "Graphical Depth" than previous editions of Windows, even Windows Vista. But it seems also that it is not being utilized for the OS appearance and feel. When one looks at a beautiful background art, such as a nature scene, they can see this "Graphical Depth" go off into the distance. Why not animate Windows opening and closing in a more "Out of the Box" manner which is unique to Windows 7, such as when opening Internet Explorer or any other program, that it comes up to the front view from far off in the distance in a creative and clever manner? I'm not sure if I am explaining myself correctly, but does anyone understand what I mean and possibly agree?

- I haven't had a chance to evaluate the new Windows backup system backup/restore functionality (this functionality is seriously broken in Vista since restoring even to the same hardware/harddrive is not guaranteed to work -- making it downright dangerous) but I've been using the file backup and have a few issues:
1. I notice that backup will only be available in the Pro version, but NOT in the Home Premium version. I can't imagine what the thinking behind this is! Differentiating by domain joining certainly makes sense, bitlocker, not as much, but ok. But data backup is one of the most important things that EVERYONE should be doing, and precious few (at least at the consumer level) actually do. And those that do tend not to have a comprehensive backup strategy, but rather do manual, and very sporadic, backups, ensuring that when disaster strikes, at best they'll have a really copy of their data.
Putting a decent, easy to use, highly visible backup tool into consumer hands is one of the most useful things Microsoft could do and the decision not to make it standard insures this will not happen. I've had the opportunity to play with Mac OS X at work and my overall impression has been, "I don't get what the big deal is.". There have only been a few things I've encountered in OS X that really stood out as exceptional and completely missing from windows. One of those is Time Machine, and it's prominent place in the OS X dock so that users are made aware of its existence. Windows NEEDS a tool like this, and while the Windows backup utility is nowhere near as elegant as Time Machine, it has at least some of the same functionality and is a whole lot better than nothing. I hope Microsoft will reconsider including this in Home Premium. Or at least offer the functionality through something like a Free Windows Live download -- you can even use the opportunity to advertise Windows Home Server for more comprehensive network based backup and sharing.
2. I have a symbolic link to a folder on a different drive. When I go directly to the physical location of that folder (and its files/subfolders) and right click I'll get previous versions stored from both system restore points and file backups. However, if I go to the same location through the symbolic link, Explorer is unable to find any previous versions. Explorer should be smart enough to resolve symbol links to their physical paths and extract the previous version information. I think this is a bug or oversight that should be corrected.
3. When I did a test of restoring the latest file backup, not only did it restore the latest backup, it also restored every version of each file that had multiple version backed up on different dates, as well as restoring files that had been deleted before the most recent backup. I'm not sure if there's any way to specify if you want all versions, deleted files, or just the actual state of a restored folder at the time of the backup being restored, but if there is a way, it's not at all obvious. It's also not clear if restoring all versions is the intended behaviour or a bug. This should be fixed up ro clarified in the UI at least. Also, there's no easy way to explore different versions of a folder at different backup dates. It would be nice if you could browse the backup but then go forward and backwards in time to see changes. Alternatively, if there could be some sort of visual markup - files with previous or future versions could be coloured, files that exist in previous versions but were deleted at the time of the current backup could show up greyed out and with a strikethrough.
4. I've said it before and I'll say it again: incremental system image backups: the best anti-malware protection available is regular backups. If a daily or weekly automated system backup were performed, in the event of an infection, recovery becomes trivial. While system restore has its uses, I wouldn't trust it to recover from a rootkit infection. Without incremental image backup support, daily system backups are going to take up lots and lots of space. This is such a basic feature of backup software I don't see why it's missing here. Especially if you're only going to include backup in the more expensive Windows versions (see point 1).
Thanks. Windows 7 RC seems like a finished product. It has a nice feel to it and certanly live up to the user centric ideals it's aiming for. It's seems to be as secure as Vista but less noisey and gives you more controll over how alerts are displayed.
Old games seem to work good. I have been playing Diablo II again. 7 like vista properly keeps the 4:3 aspet ratio on my 16:10 wide screen monitor. It runs like a charm. It brings back memories of my old 300MHz AMD K3 Desktop with only 160MB Ram and 40GB HDD, 3Dfx Voodoo 2 (I still have it) not to mention Windows 98. Unfortunately being a sprite based game, playing it on a 2.6ghz Core 2 duo with 4GB Ram and a Geforce 8600GTS makes little difference in performance.
With the right codecs installed, I can watch any video format, Divx, MP4, OGM, MKV, AVI. With it outputted to a second monitor via dual out on my PC or via extender on Xbox 360 which both works great. (note media center only plays Mpeg2, AVI, mp4, dvix, and DVD) all other must be played on Windows Media Player or 3rd party media player.- Seeing all the comments, even name-calling and profanity, reminds me why I switched to Mac 2 years ago and never looked back. New OS upgrades for $39 next month, only one solid. stable OS that works, every time, networks that find everything hooked up to them automatically the first time, routers that actually work, it all just works, and works well.I downloaded RC 7 and it's pretty, and boots fast, but then there's the driver issues, and the connectivity issues, and the vendor issues, and the multiple versions of Win 7, and ......If, as one poster here said "... Win 7 is like crack...." well, just say no.

- I did the clean install of Win 7 RC just like y'all requested. And the biggest problem from doing that was that I had to install the HP printer driver from scratch.
I ended up having to skip using the install program and just right mouse click the printer on the network to get the printer installed. There seemed to be this vicious circle with the HP install program where it wouldn't accept being installed by Win 7 RC. Even though I was set up to be network admin. It refused to recognize that it was being installed by the network admin.
I'm not sure what doodads and cool features I'm missing by not using the install disk but I've been able to set the color printer to default to black and white printing so that I don't waste color toner. Sooo it's doing what I wanted from a print driver.
I have yet to try to get the scanner on this printer to work. Soo I'll report back when I've had time to test that out.
Basically this is a reminder to y'all to get after HP about coming up with some way to circumvent this glitch. The HP website had no drivers specifically for win 7 yet soo this is probably to be expected.

- oh yah, when you're using windows flip (win key + tab), the desktop slide show wallpaper transition disappears.
it will just suddenly change the wallpaper. quite an embarrassing mistake rite?
if you don't get what i mean, set your wallpaper to slide show with several pictures, then press and hold win key + tab and wait for wallpaper to change. - Posted this elsewhere but didn't see any response, and it's a significant bug. In previous versions of Windows, the Recyle Bin will warn you if you try to delete more files than can fit in the bin. It'll give the option to cancel the delete command or delete the files permanently. In Windows 7, there are 2 situations in which the Recycle Bin decides to permanently delete files on its own:
1. If you try to delete a large number of files (say, a few thousand small images, not wrapped inside a folder) they will be permanently deleted instead of placed in the Recyle Bin, even if the total filesize is small enough to fit in the Recyle Bin.
2. If you try to delete more files than can fit in the Recycle Bin (in terms of total filesize, not number of files), then Windows will stick as many files as it can in the Recycle Bin, and permanently delete the rest.
In both of these situations, the "are you sure you want to delete?" confirmation dialog that's presented to the user is the one for ordinary delete, not the shift+delete operation. This could be a disasterous bug. - Alt+Tab thumbails should be biger, cuz when I do that, I dont recognize anything, like windows from the same applications (like msn, Word, explorer), and i need a way to close applications when I do that.
And other thing, when I try to peek a NEW window of messenger, or any NEW window than I had no opened, the preview is WRONG
here's an example in windows peek, but is the same thing when I do Alt+Tab or Win+Tab

And There's a bug, when I change from Balanced to Power Saver, the UI disable transparency (thats ok) but it changes the color to white-bone, not the one I select before...- In the search of the Start menu, i can't use "Alt" or "Ctrl" for select multi-files.
And in the search I don't see the History of Favorites, and I already take a look at indexed locations and they are added correctly
- Ok, there's a big problem of UI, I have a computer with 32MB of video but with good procesor-memory, anyway, it does'nt supports aero. But what I know, is that the "eye-candy" of aero than need the 128MB of video, is the transparency, so, why with 32MB of video I can't change my color??? I really think than I dont need that much of video to do that simple thing, and even worse, when I try to customize the color, here's what i get:

- I'm finding when I have my N1 desktop card installed and running Windows 7 (RC1) x64 freezes very quickly. Just as soon as I get connected to my wireless network it froze. After the first restart is froze at the welcome screen, next two attempts made it to the desktop but froze immediately afterwards. I'm running all up to date drivers for x64 XP/Vista.
Uninstalled wireless card and plugged in cabled connection - no issues.
I've read about many others having freezing issues, but I seem to have dialed in on a cause - thought this was worth sharing.

- I don't really have a question. I just wanted to comment on a couple issues I have been having. First of all, it would be awesome to have a utility installed with the OS to report bugs, but that's just me.
I've been using Windows 7 RC Media Center and really like where things are going. Aesthetically, there is no other PVR software that can even come close. I especially like how I can have the system sleep when nothing is being recorded. I wish I could do that in BeyondTV. But that brings me to my first problem.
After the system comes out of Standby, one of two things always happens. The first few times, the network connection was broken and could not be repaired without rebooting the system. I tried using the OS option to try to repair the connection, powered off the modem, and router, but none worked until the system was rebooted.
Secondly, a few days ago I installed Snapstream's Firefly remote to use with Media Center. The remote works flawlessly until the system goes into Standby. For some reason the IR Reciever goes dead after Standby and just like the network connection, cannot be restored without rebooting. I tried unplugging it and plugging it into different USB ports, but nothing happens. I find this odd because none of the other USB connected devices give me any trouble.
So there appears to be some issues with coming out of Standby.
I also have been using Windows Explorer/My Computer and have experienced sluggishness unlike any other Windows version. I've ran into an issue where I delete something and it doesn't disappear until I refresh the screen. I noticed in the different libraries in Explorer, My Music, My Pictures, etc..., it has become difficult to Copy & Paste from different folders. I kept losing folders after trying to Copy & Paste. They seemed to just disappear, until I found them later in a random sub-folder. It would be much better just to bring back the menu bar. I don't know why MS wants to drop it. It just makes life more difficult.
I was also disappointed when I found I can only have 1 instance of a certain folder open at a time. I like the feature where I can have multiple instances of the My Music folder open when I am rearranging files. Windows 7's Explorer would not allow me to do so.
So far, those are the issues I have had. I just have 1 other nit-pick. The Media Center gadget is bigger than all the other gadgets and that gets a little annoying. That may just be my opinion though. Otherwise, I really like the Landscape desktop theme and how the background changes from time to time. Very nice touch. I noticed a screensaver inside Media Center showing the entire library of photos installed on my system in some sort of 3D spreadsheet. It would zoom in and out on random pictures. When I first saw it I said, "Wow, that's cool!" I'm disappointed that I can't set that as the default screensaver for the OS.
Those are my findings and suggestions. I hope they help in the development of Windows 7.

- Installed on alternate disk (D:). Creating a new partition on C: drive (under XP Pro x64) proved troublesome. Installed with no problem. All applications have to be reinstalled on D drive under 7RC. When try to read My Documents on C drive system denies me access. (I think this is a good thing.) To transfer files I first copy to Passport back up drive from XP then change to 7RC transfer them into D drive.
So far mp compatibility problems. I've installed Office XP pro, Firefox, Thunderbird ReadIRIS Pro 11, Adobe reader and several smaller utility programs (into the x86 program folder). All run with no problems although I had to install some of them several times.
Only glitch I had was installing drivers for Kodak ESP 7. The Kodak driver disk would finish about 80% of install then stall out. Went to 7's control panel and selected "install printer" and let 7 do all the work. I found what it needed on line, installed it and printer and scanner work fine.
XP Pro x64 runs on a eSATA 300 disk, Win7 RC and an older eide disk yet Win 7RC starts much faster and all of my application (Office, Quicken, etc) load faster and run faster.
I've seen enough to take advantage of the early buy offer of 7 online.
I refused to upgrade to Vista but Win 7 in RC version is really good.

First ran on VM under Vista Ultimate x86, after two weeks of testing, moved to actual machine.
Win7RC x86 has been running in dual-boot config with XP Pro x86 on this hardware:
P4 Prescott 520 (2.8GHz)
AG8 mobo (915P/ICH6R)
3GB DDR/400 (balanced sets)
160GB Seagate Barracudas x2 in RAID 0
X850XT 256MB video card (x16 PCI-E)
Additional hardware is:
External WD USB HD (160GB)
PCI TV Tuner/Capture card
Canon flatbed scanner (CanoScan 3000ex)
Samsung Laser printer (ML-1740)
This particular box was built by me several years ago for XP. It has run XP ever since, and ran it very well. I chose to use it as the live eval box because I could use the Vista box to better monitor the RC. I wiped, re-partitioned and re-formatted the RAID array, creating two partitions of roughly 141GB each. XP was reinstalled clean to D: partition, tweaked back to standard and then Win 7 RC went onto C: partition.
Windows 7 RC completed the install in eighteen minutes FLAT. That is from the boot off the disc to the point where I created the Admin UA. XP took the normal 28-35 minutes for the install, and another fifteen to tweak from the folder I keep on the external HD. I can honestly say that I have never had an OS install that quickly. And Win7RC handles a little faster than XP does on identical equipment.
Of note in the install was that Win7 did NOT ask for the F6 disc for the RAID. That surprised me, as I expected it to ask for the driver. Once I had the admin UA set up, I checked my device manager. Win7 found all the hardware, and except for three cases (printer, scanner and Tuner card) already had working drivers configured for them. It took a little work to get a driver for the scanner and printer to work (ended up using Vista x86 drivers in both cases), and the Tuner card took me two days to find drivers that Win 7 would accept. Everything else was fine. I found that I could use my tweak folder from the external HD to install my usual application list - once I set the permissions, of course. Aside from some driver issues (gee, shades of Vista there), I am very pleased with Win7.
My attempt to use one of the AV clients SUGGESTED by Win7 (I shant name names, but you know who you are, TrendMicro), resulted in me being locked out of my own Admin account. From that point on, I flew without a safety net - and nothing bad has happened. It could be my careful habits or it could be luck; doesn't matter. being locked out of your own admin account pretty much makes AV a moot point, no? And no, I still do not know what exactly happened there. Burned the drive down and re-installed again. Second clean install was just as fast as the first.
I have used Win7 every day for more than a month now, and I have grown fond of many of the features. One thing I am NOT fond of is the custom-coded IE8 for Win7. I LIKE IE8 on XP and Vista. I liked it on Win7, too - until (about a week ago), it got an update from MS and now it does not play with Java, Shockwave or Flash. I can't figure out where the problem is, but it treats any links in Flash or SW as null links (won't even TRY to follow them, nor will it give me any reason for no longer ignoring all Flash/SW link features). Manually forcing the link SOMETIMES works, but not often. Java keeps being hit with access prompts post-update. I have played with all the settings I can find in IE8, Flash/SW and Java, matched the settings against XP and Vista IE8 setting for all four progs, but Win7 still refuses to work with those links. As a test control, I put Firefox 3.011 on the Win7 machine and checked the sites behind IE8. Nearest I can tell, it is some setting either in IE8 for Win7 or in Win7's security that I can't seem to find. And even so, IE8 is usually faster than Firefox.
Hope they fix whatever they broke before they hit GA with Win7...
I have been working primarily with Vista for the last year and half or so, and I can honestly say that I like Win7 much better than Vista. If MS had offered full versions of Ultimate (what I am used to working with now) for a reasonable price, I would have bought three and loaded it on ALL my machines - and used it for future builds, too. But, at the price they want for Ultimate, I won't be changing to Windows 7 for while. Vista and XP will have to remain my main OSs, I guess.
Windows 7 is a distinct improvement on Vista the whole way around. Most noticeable in my situation is how fast it handles large suites like Office 2007 Enterprise (I have been known to have multiple documents open in Word, Excel, Access and Outlook running on two or more boxes during a project). In Vista, that tends to drag the response speed down - expecially when Office is not able to grab all the resources because programs like uTorrent, MP, IE8 and VirtualBox are going full tilt at the same time. In Win7, the usage seems to be far more efficient, as I have had MORE open on the older box and had better response time out of the Win7 than Vista with fewer open programs.
If I had to choose one feature of Windows 7 that I like more than any other, it would be the drive image feature. Restore points are all well and good, but if there is a major failure, you are still screwed, because restore points are OS dependant. Just to be clear, I define major failure as a HD physically failing or a lightening strike taking down the entire box (haven't had that happen to me PERSONALLY, but seen it at work). I first tried the drive image over my home LAN to the Vista machine's HD. It took about 30 mintes to create an image of C: and D: on the Vista HD. I decided to try shuffling some things around, and when I had made enough room on the USB external HD attached to the text box, I tried it again. It only took about twelve minutes to create the image on the USB HD. After that, nightly back-ups of the image take about six minutes to do. Early on, I tested this feature by booting to XP and burning the C: drive down before re-formatting in NTFS. I put in the image recovery disc I created and booted. All I had to do was point the recovery program to the external HD and tell it to recover the drive. Less than a half hour later, it was like nothing had ever happened to the Win7 drive.
I very much like that! Wish I had had that simple of an image recovery option earlier, when I was running Win95, 98SE and ME...
Vista has the option; at least, I noticed that it was there after the SP2 for Vista hit, but I have yet to try it on Vista. Somehow, my experience with that OS leads me to believe it will not be as easy as the test was in Windows 7 RC.
Overall, Windows 7 RC loaded on actual hardware out-performs both XP and Vista - even when running on older hardware. Of the three OS's currently in use by myself, Windows 7 is the fastest booting, shutting down, restarting and log in/log out - and it is by a clearly noticeable margin, too. Generally speaking, it handles apps and tasks faster as well. There are some that favor XP or Vista, but they are few in my useage lists. Aside from small issues, Windows 7 runs all my software without undue labor tweaking or work-around fitting. Resources SEEM to be better managed than in Vista, though when operating in Xp and using Office 2007 Enterprise, XP gets a little CPU and RAM usage happy. I have more than once maxed out CPU and RAM both in XP with Office 2007 Ent and some other apps working it. Under Windows 7, the usage very rarely reaches 100% CPU for more than a half second or so, and generally chuggs along at about 30-45% with apps open and running. RAM utilization (of 3GB total) averages 50% under Windows 7 when apps are open, but if doing something like looking at local .jpg folders, it can drop to less than 10% - something I have never seen out of XP or Vista. And no, I don't know why.

A final thought: after the SP2 for Vista hit, I noticed that the security scheme was nearly idential to Windows 7, with permissions boxes and increased Admin-only funtions and the like. I personally think this is MUCH better than the old Vista UAC scheme (which annoyed the ____ out of me). If they could fix the Vista UAC problem by porting in Windows 7 scheme, why can't they fix the IE8 for Win7 problem by allowing the use of a NON-CUSTOM coded IE8 to work with Windows 7? They say that Win7 has a special IE8 because of special features, but I can't find anything different in my daily use between IE8 for XP, IE8 for Vista and IE8 for Win7; aside from that Adobe issue, of course.
Conclusion: I will be migrating to Windows 7 as soon as I can financially afford to, as the overall count so far is nine and one, good to bad. That's my experience for whatever it is worth.- I find that Windows-Explorer could be improved: You can easily change the arrow on the right side of Organize with the arrow on the right side of Forward (Recently visited pages). The distance between these 2 points is too small or there has to be made some cosmetics to no more change these 2 arrows.

I have my passwords stored in a text-file. I mark the password by double-click and copy it in the application's password-field.
If the password contains ? or % it is not possible to mark the word by double-click. The word is only marked till directly before the %-sign or the last marked character is ?. Also + is not marked and $ is the first marked sign, if it appears in a password.
If I try to mark ab§€cd, then only ab§ or €cd is marked.
Sometimes § is not marked, if it is the last sign, but I could not find out when or when not.
If a word contains a ! it is only marked including the ! or only the signs on the right side of !.
Also I found out that parts of my passwords which contain (){}[] are marked together with these signs, other parts of my password not. Or when I mark these parts, the signs in ()[]{} including these brackets are not marked. This seems to make sense für maths.
But what is the sense behind the other results?
As not everyone who uses a computer, marks formulas or other mathematic things, it might be better to have 2 options for marking words: the "old" one which marked every sign regardless of which one is used, and the "new" one with the "features" that I have found out.

Several thoughts...
First it would be nice (and as stated by others) if when you click "new folder" on the desktop or elsewhere you got a folder, not a two paned explorer window. I use folders (actually shortcuts to folders on the server) to organize various notes on my desktop. So far I haven't been able to segregate folder view from explorer view…it seems to be one way or the other throughout.I also use Desktop Sidebar exclusively and although it runs on Vista it does weird things on Win 7. It seems to be the culprit causing some of my icons to scrabble and also prevents the screensaver from running or monitors from shutting down. I have tried Gadgets but frankly, they are very “clunky” and lack all the features of Desktop Sidebar.
I would also like to be able to choose the classic start menu and I would like to see an option to change the wallpaper on login added to those choices already there.
The “documents and settings” folder of XP was so much easier to sort and customize. The Win 7 “Users” folder seems like regression to if there’s a really hard way to do something, Microsoft found it.

Since this thread is for comments, I would like to make a few!
I have worked in the Computer Industry for over 50 years now and have retired. Over the years I have worked in the areas of software, operations, design and engineering, and all areas in between; mostly in technical support functions. Now I play with my computers and support my friends systems, I also try to play a little Country/Bluegrass on my Bass every once in a while. Bottom line is “I have More Time than Good Since”! Nuff Said!
Let me start off by extending a “Great Big Thank You“ to all of the Users and Moderators in today’s Modern Forums. Forums have become the best place to find answers to your problems. You people give of your time and talents so freely, just for the help and love of the technology. “My Hats Off to All of You”.
It is sad but true; the Technical Support People does not offer solutions to your problems anymore! All they do is “Read the Script” and suggest you “Pay your Money and Upgrade”, that’s probably all their expertise is capable of doing. Sometimes you can get your problem request forwarded on to a knowledgeable technician, but not very often! Case in Point “I used to be a staunch supporter of Symantec/Norton Products, but mainly because of Tech Support – I no longer use or recommend their Products”
The current trend of company’s letting the Common User beta test their new products is GREAT. The quickest way to find the problems in a product is turn it over to the user! I once supported a large mainframe system that ran for 6 years before uncovering an original software bug that reared its ugly head when the conditions were just right, so time and users is the best way to uncover bugs! While we are learning these new techniques, let me offer some comments and suggestions.
The use of self-reporting error tools and programs like the “Windows Feedback Program” are great for the development team to identify problems, but they work behind the seines and the user seldom knows what’s being reported on. Buy the way the “Problem Reporting Link” in the Beta Release build 7000 was a very good way for a user to report a problem and know what was reported on! Now on to the use of Forums – I researched a Serious Hard Drive Corruption problem one of my test systems was experiencing – see my Post Here
This is a serious bug that the Software Development Team needs to be aware of and I couldn’t tell if they had been made aware of this bug in the New Windows 7 RC build 7100 OPS. I know that the Software Development Team can’t issue a Report on the Known Problems! Boy, the Burners would be Turned On and the Flames would be Horrific, but just a little “Boilerplate” with the statement “Problem Noted” would let the Test User know that the reported problem is “In Work” and his “Post was Reviewed” by the Development Team! This action would be a tremendous improvement in the Communications between Product Development and the Tester User reporting in the forums. - So moving from Vista to Win 7, lets say i'm a new user. When I put the chip in the chip reader, the Win 7 photo transfer comes up and asks me to import using Windows. It then puts the pictures in the pictures folder, and the videos in the video folder, AND gives you the option to put both the pics and videos in whatever folder you choose.
Another option on the autoplay is to VIEW in Live Photogallery, which then lets you view the pictures, and THEN import them, however, it puts both the pictures AND videos in the pictures folder, with NO option to separate them.
Why are these methods different? It's confusing.
Also, if you have already imported the pictures or videos WITHOUT deleting them from the device, it DOES NOT prompt you to download the existing photos the second time you put the chip in. I can see how this stops redundancy, but it is also confusing because the pictures ARE still on the device.
Am I alone in thinking that MS hearts are in the right place here, but they still need to work on the photo importing in Windows 7?

- Ok here are the main issues I had with Win7.
-Being able to open files with a program when dropping on taskbar instead of getting pinned - thankfully that was added to RC. I hope it makes it to the final build, I use it all the time, especially to open config files with strange extensions with notepad or opening a video file with a different player from default.
-Also it should be possible to place shortcuts to folders or files straight onto taskbar instead of having them all pinned under a program: one click access instead of right-click, look through list, and then another click is always better. You could just add it as another option if you drag the file with right mouse button.
-Ctrl-A no longer works when renaming a file... most of the time I actually DO want to change the extension, and having to select it manually with a mouse or using a lot of ctrl-shift-right arrow is a big pain
-Smarter behavior when closing a program using its notification area icon (Win7 sometimes thinks the program crashed even though it exited correctly)
-Animated notification area network icon (like two blinking computers in older Windows), very convinient to see the state of the connection
-I can't find a hybernation button anywhere so I can't tell if the computer goes to standby or hybernate after I select Sleep (especially as the screen turns right off)
-It's very annoying how the windows update windows just disappears after you select to install updates, and you have to open it again to view the progress. You should put a checkbox somewhere whether is should do that, like right at the bottom of that window
-After downloading more themes from Microsoft's website, I can't select wallpapers from more than one of them at a time, and the whole point was to be able to cycle through as many as possible. It would be awesome if it also showed wallpapers from the Pictures library with the ability to add more folders (with checkboxes to add them to the theme too).
-An option to change the bootable partition. I kept an old install of XP in case Win7 crashes on me, but after a while I figured I don't need it anymore. I had to spent a couple hours figuring out how to do this by poking here and there, in the end I just deleted boot files from XP partition and ran through several recovery options on Win7 DVD until I got the right one. It's gotta be easier than that, something like right-clicking a partition in Disk Management.
-Some sort of advanced security control center. I see lots of security features that are designed to protect most users, but you should know that there are also expert users that do know what they are doing (and are willing to accept risks when they don't).
For example, I find it ridiculous that I, as an Administrator, cannot even access a folder inside Program Files - there's plenty of times when I need to change a config file, copy a config file, copy some downloaded file that gets stored there, access browser's cache and so on. I tend to need access to Program Files multiple times a day. Not to mention various subfolders under Users. So I had to spend a good couple hours giving myself access to all the folders on the computer by resetting the permissions and granting myself ownership (not even sure that was the best way to do it, but I was impatient) on every single folder (and then some subfolders that didn't inherit it) on the drive.
I also disabled UAC, which tends to be more annoying then helpful.
Driver signing is another security issue that is rather disappointing, as it pretty much blocks a bunch of freeware programs like PeerGuardian that don't have the money (due to being freeware) to pay for driver signing.
There should be a single control center with simple checkboxes where you can turn off all of those things and others like Firewall (which you don't care about if you're behind a corporate-grade firewall), Defender, etc.
As for positive things, I'm gonna be short here after all that typing... I love the interface, I love the sound mixer (I've been wishing for that for years!), I love how fast the system runs. - When I 'Save Theme for Sharing', it stores the screensaver in the theme, but not the screen saver's settings. For example, I saved a theme in which I selected the "3D Text" screensaver. When I sent the theme to my mother, the text on her screensaver still said "Windows 7" instead of the text that I wanted her to see (which went with the theme).

- Despite the awful problems with Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer 8 (specially), and some networking troubles, I will migrate from XP to Windows 7 without any doubt (I never like Vista).
The only fear I have: please don't do W7 too expensive! Seeing all the comments, even name-calling and profanity, reminds me why I switched to Mac 2 years ago and never looked back. New OS upgrades for $39 next month, only one solid. stable OS that works, every time, networks that find everything hooked up to them automatically the first time, routers that actually work, it all just works, and works well.
I downloaded RC 7 and it's pretty, and boots fast, but then there's the driver issues, and the connectivity issues, and the vendor issues, and the multiple versions of Win 7, and ......If, as one poster here said "... Win 7 is like crack...." well, just say no.
Guess you weren't around for the transition from Mac OS9 to OSX when Mac lost many of their users to XP because the transition was easier and they had to buy all new software anyway as OSX didn't do backwards compatability - at all. LOL

Things I can’t live with , I have mentioned before so I won’t harp on them. Mainly it is not being able to configure my OS the way I want it. 1) The start menu cannot be configured as it could in XP . 2) I can’t put data to be saved eg My Documents in a partition of its own. I played with Tweakui a bit but in the end abandoned it. And 3) Just too hard to navigate and open to files and folders “belonging” to the system and 4) there seems to files and folders everywhere which have the same names but you can open some and not others. Just very unnecessarily complicated. Seems all the effort has gone into making a pretty desktop and not an elegant OS.
Reiterating, if the start menu was made to be easily configured like XP I would buy the new Windows7 when it becomes available. If the start menu stays as it is in Windows7 RC I am sticking with XP. This may sound picky but with 50 odd programmes on my computer I don’t want to wasting time as I now am, running around the start menu to open one.
As background I am in my late 60’s and had every MS operating system since DOS 5 except Vista. So change is always going to be difficult for me, if there are not overwhelming advantages to change. I wish it well and thanks for the help I have had.
busso - First of all, I already like Win7 better than Vista. It works better with my TV Tuner (needing QAM), my high def camcorder, my photos, etc.
However, this doesn't mean that I'm without gripes:
1. I can play high-def .mp4 videos from my camcorder in Windows Media Player without a hitch. ...But when I play them in Media Center, the video plays slower than the audio, and within seconds my audio and video don't line up. The longer I watch the video, the further out-of-sync the two get. Shouldn't they be accessing the same codec?
2. I can play these same .mp4 files (which is GREAT - don't get me wrong), but I can't edit them in Movie Maker or create a DVD from them in DVD Maker? That's somewhat appalling that the two don't even recognize the format...
3. There doesn't seem to be any consistency to the settings for importing video and pictures. If I connect my camera (and select "Import pictures and videos using Windows") I can edit the settings for "Cameras and Portable Devices", to specify where I want different file types to import to. ...But when I use Windows Live Photo Gallery and select 'File > Options' and select the 'Import' subtab, everything looks identical to the "Windows version" yet I can specify different folders for "Cameras", "Video Cameras", and other selections. This is a confusing problem when I want the videos taken from my little point-and-shoot camera to go to the 'Pictures' folder and I want the videos taken on my high-def camcorder to go to the 'Videos' folder.
4. Without having new pictures/videos on the plugged-in device, there's nowhere in Windows that you can set the options in #3 above (but you can for the Photo Gallery). You have to have a new picture/video on the device and then plug it in, which you can then selec the "Import Options" link. Seems the reistry will always fill with garbage lol.
Perhaps if microsoft did a quality assurance system to pull in line software authors
to clean their garbage.
People would deftinately go for programs that are ehical about registry use and an assurance will bring many customers.

I am a bit confused with respect to what you mean by "I can’t put data to be saved eg My Documents in a partition of its own." The My Documents (or Documents) folder is a reference point. If you go to the user, right click on My Documents, choose properties, and then choose Location, you can redirect the location to another place on the drive, on another drive entirely, or to another network location. It takes about 15 seconds - I have typically set my machines up since Vista with multiple user profiles (mostly to keep confidential business e-mail separate) but redirect most of the various personal User folders to an alternate location. BTW, the user folder concept itself is a Vista convention (not new to Windows 7) and is highly customizable with respect to "where things go." Personally I strongly prefer the Vista/Windows 7 approach over the clumsy and insecure approach to multiple users under XP. Different people have different preferences. As far as "restrictive control," Vista/Windows 7 security isn't going anywhere but it can be relaxed....

With respect to the Start Menu, I am glad the XP menu has been ditched and really hope it never returns. Again, it is a matter of perspective. FWIW though, there is already one third party app out to use taskbar jump list functionality to place whatever app shortcuts one wants under a single taskbar button. You click the button and then choose the program you want - everything under one button and no need to visit the menu at all.Guess you weren't around for the transition from Mac OS9 to OSX when Mac lost many of their users to XP because the transition was easier and they had to buy all new software anyway as OSX didn't do backwards compatability - at all. I gather the person is also not aware that the reason Adobe's CS4 apps for 64 bit are Windows/Vista-only because Apple changed programming languages in mid-stream on the software developers. For that matter, the person probably never saw the warnings from Nikon and Apple, after one of the recent Mac OS upgrades, that using Nikon's Capture NX on the new version of the OS could lead to image file corruption. If it weren't for two things, I would like Macs a lot more: the irritatingly cute names Apple insists on giving apps, and the "fan-like" attitudes of a subset of Mac users.....

- Media Center Library setup - I set to watch different folders - one with Video, One with Music, One with Photos ( not mixed ). I get all folders to navigate through when I go to Video or Music or Photo. Normally I should see only Vidoe Files in Video, Music Files in Music and Photos in Photos. Not Music Folder in Videos and all that mix... It's more dificult to navigate with those ghost folders.
Touch Panel problem to navigate - I've got the oportunity to install W7 for testing on 2 HP devices - An Touchsmart Media Center and a TouchPad Notebook. I got a pain in my ... to navigate and open programs, especially on the Notebook. Acording to your ideea touch is now what W7 should do the best. But I cannot navigate easy. Considering there is no keyboard and mouse I have to navigate with fingers or a pen. Perhaps you should consider an new explorer to be offered separatelly ( in the Touch Pack as example, but better separatelly ), based on the OLD CLASIC MENU, BUT with bigger spaces between tabs. The OLD way was more efficient in those cases - cannot search easy or use the mouse. A tree navigation is more efficient when using fingers, and gestures.
I've said better separatelly than in the Touch Pack ,because I've noticed that Touch Pack needs nVidia Physics. That means it will be offered perhaps on a very limited array of products. Seems the reistry will always fill with garbage lol.

Er.. That WAS the point of a lot of what all went into Vista. If you look back, old versions of Quickbooks prior to 2006 used to write values into the registry as a means to communicate between it's modules. Trying to run older versions of QB on Vista resulted in an epic FAIL. Mind you, Microsoft published best practices guidelines way back in 2001 when XP was released - that specifcally said NOT to use the Registry as a means to pass information between modules.
So when Vista came along - they enforced that bit of programming logic. And that bit of enforcement is carried on in Windows 7.- Why there isn't possible to reserve a drive letter to a drive (internal partition, external hd or cd/dvd)? It's possible to change but impossible to reserve. I think it's a good function for people that share music, video, image from external hd, and if the letter change, it's impossible to share. Please think about it...
- I have autoplay turned OFF for mixed-content devices.
1. I Open a Win-7 Explorer window.
2. Insert a mixed-content thumb-drive
3. The removable drive shows up properly in explorer drives.
4. Click once to change the focus to the root of the removable thumb drive.
5. Unplug the thumb drive.
6. The explorer session terminates and closes.
Not good!
On XP and Vista when the USB drive was pulled, the drive would disappear, and Explorer focus would change to a nearby drive or to 'Computer', but the session would not terminate. This was perfectly understandable, reasonable and preferable.
Closing a preexisting Explorer session when a thumb drive is pulled is NOT GOOD!
If you manually click to change focus away from the removable drive before pulling it out, the explorer session does not terminate. It only closes when the focus is on the removable drive that is ejected.
I can see the design reasoning - When autoplay is on, and you insert a removable, Win-7 will automatically start an explorer window and then close down that explorer window automatically when the drive is removed to keep the desktop uncluttered. But it shouldn't close down preexisting non-autoplay windows.
Maybe the reasoning is ok, but the execution is flawed and incomplete.
And this just in - If I have 3 explorer windows open, and each has the focus on the thumb drive when it's removed, all 3 are closed.

How big of a job would it be to modify outlook express 6 to work with Win 7? I have used every email program I can find and they just don't work as well as outlook express. - I'm liking the way win7 functions so far, however i have a little suggestion on the peek function. as of now it seems its use is just for looking at the wallpaper. Instead, i think it would be cool if the function allowed you to make certain windows transparent or semi transparent in the foreground so that you may get information off of a window in the background. I.e i have an installation window open in the foreground, but it involves directions that are found in a pdf/window/notepad in the background.

That's exactly what I use the preview of the items on the taskbar for. I don't have to click on anything, just hover over the taskbar item and then hover over the window preview. It brings that window to focus for me to read, then I just move the mouse and my work is back in focus. - In the modern age of USB thumb drives, we should be able to format these drives through Windows 7 and make them bootable to a command prompt (i.e. for motherboard BIOS updates that need to be done before actually installing Windows).
What BIOS are you using that won't let you install the update from Windows?

automated creation of folders and automated filling, distributing and sinchronizing in one, by criteria is a great functionality, that no one has bothered to think of. if Microsoft get first use of it, i'm sure it will have GREAT impact on their sales!

As mentioned in a lot of topics, this should be fixed in a major Windows Version. But it's still a standing issue with Windows 7 RC.
It would help us a lot to get this correct. It's Vietnam with a market with population of more than 86+ million people.

- Photoviewer has a bug, when clicking on actual size, before maximizing, and then maximizing(so first actual size, then maximize window) The bar becomes all gray and ugly. Also, wouldnt it be better for the transparent bar to show the picture you are watching, and not the desktop...

In XP I use the keyboard shortcut Windows key, U, and then U or R to shut down or restart the computer. In Windows 7 all this does is search for "uu" or "ur". Please bring back keyboard shortcuts to shut down or restart the computer.
I agree. There are a lot of places where Windows 7 is less friendly for keyboard users. For shutdown/reboot, you can still use Alt+F4 when the desktop has focus.Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete as your system command (shutdown/reboot) launch point. It's got a slight amount of lag though because it's switching to the secure desktop to render that screen.
Although honestly I'm not impacted much because to sleep I just tap my power button, and I can barely remember the last time I used a full shutdown or reboot.- Ctl+Alt+Del brings up the security desktop. On mine, the closest thing I see is logoff. Shutdown and reboot are not available options.

I wouldn't think there would be any difference on this on different machines, but there is a red button (labeled "Shutdown Options" if I hover over it) in the bottom right corner of the "security desktop screen" on my machine when I hit Control+Alt+Delete. That is not present on your machine? That is a surprise....

- Looks like tab is the only way. The options in the center have accelerator keys that appear when you press Alt, but that shutdown one apparently does not. The only way with the keyboard I was able to find was to tap WinFlag, then escape, then Alt+F4 to get to the shutdown dialog. Kind of kludgy.
Yeah, but how do you get to it using just the keyboard?
If you have keyed in Control+Alt+Delete and are on the screen, hit tab a couple times or just hit Alt+S (either work)....
Stephen- SUGGESTION: When selecting multiple items in a folder, the staus bar (aero theme) will display a "Show more details..." link. When pressed it will calculate folder data from the selected items. Imagine if you were selecting less items and wanted to see how much the size of the data has shrank -- you then have to manually hit the link again (and again etc). It would be nice if the link 'remembered' from the content selected (as well as using key combinations: holding shift or control or select +a) and kept calculating selected item information for that series of actions.
Pretty damn trivial I suppose, but it'd be another nice touch :) - Windows 7 Help has not been useful when I've attempted to use it a number of times. For example, when I enter the term "wallpaper" (in an attempt to see what wallpapers are available) it gives me 0 responses. It suggests I search the Windows website, etc. I received the same response when I searched for "screensavers." I tried to find out how to use medium icons for all folders, so I searched "use all same icons," an admittedly probably unclear term. It returned "Keyboard Shortcuts."
I think Windows 7 is great, but there are going to be a lot of non-professional users using it, and I'm afraid that if we don't give them usable help, they'll become discouraged. I've had to use a search engine to answer every question I've had. - Hey Steve, I can't seem to figure out how to duplicate what you're saying. I went into my documents folder (not library) and ctrl+selected a few Word files, but I don't see a link to "show more details".
- The "Open With" sub-menu in Windows Vista doesn't seem to work as well as in Windows XP. Before I formatted and installed XP, I always ended up having to browse for the application I wanted to use, whereas XP always showed it in the list. After I chose the new application once in XP, and went to "Open with" again, it would appear in the list. But Vista made me browse every time. Has this been improved in Windows 7? I installed the RC inside VMWare, but I don't have any third-party applications installed to test it, yet. If it hasn't been improved, then I would be grateful if it were.
- In my experience it is. My computer came with Vista and the Open With was just as you describe. In 7, it populates that list with the latest program(s) I've used to "Open With".
- Well my comment about Windows 7 RC is that I would much rather use Vista.
To me 7 RC is one of the most boring OS's ever to come from the Third Reich ( commonly know as Microsoft) and although Vista does not do all that much that could be described as being outstanding other than being really good at eating resources and HDD space, at least it was an innovative & different move away fro the tried & true of days gone bye while still managing to incorporate just enough of "the same as" from previous versions.
Unless the Final 7 is going to be tweaked a fair amount further than the available RC version I will be sticking with what I have. I tried it for about 1 month and by the end of the 4th week I was totally bored with it. It felt like I had down graded every time I booted it up.
Vista may have had its problems in the beginning and it still has a few now but with advent of the two service packs & the truck load of KB patches it is really is starting to behave & has morphed itself into a great OS.
Windows 7 is just Microsoft's finished N-Lite version of Vista anyway.

- My SSD from Super Talent uses a program called Wiper to defrag my drive. Actually, it's not really a defrag, but in a way takes its place.
The issue is that it relies on ATA PASS THRU to cummunicate with the SSD.
Windows does not enable this feature if the drive is smaller than 137GB.
XP has an update to solve this problem, but Windows 7 does not.

- I have been installing and uninstalling Windows 7 quite a bit over the past week or so, and have noticed what seems to be a potential defect. I have been using the RC build (build 7100). My wireless AP has the following characteristics:
- Model: 2700HG-D Gateway
- Security: WPA-Personal w/ TKIP
- SSID is hidden
- Passphrase contains special characters, including '(' and '#'
Every time I install Windows 7, I see the same behavior. During the installation my wireless hardware is detected correctly and it asks which SSID I would like to connect to. I can see that the hardware is working reasonably well, because the scan shows all the other APs that are nearby. Since my SSID is hidden, though, it doesn't show up in the list.
I click the link to enter the info manually (for a hidden SSID) and enter the correct information. When I tell it to try to conect, though, it always comes back telling me I have an invalid passphrase. It also seems that the error comes back unusually fast -- almost as though it is just looking at my passphrase and deciding it's invalid without actually trying it with the AP.
At that point, I typically click the 'skip' button and the rest of the install works without problems.
Once Windows 7 is installed, I'm able to connect to my AP without any trouble at all, simply by providing the AP SSID and passphrase and telling it to connect even if the AP isn't broadcasting. So, for me, this isn't really a problem. I thought I'd point it out, though, in order to make people aware.

Surprisingly impressed. Windows 7 installed onto my aging Celeron 2.8GHz PC very easily. The most impressive part was that it automatically detected my LinkSys wireless card and apart from manually entering the wep key everything else configured automaticallly. Well done. It hasn't found my in-built sound chipset yet though!

I work a lot with people who don't have much experience in using computers.
I think it would be great if the mouse cursor would change when the mouse is moved to the top title bar in a window.
This way a new user would realize that the window could be moved around as long as they saw aforementioned cursor.
I'm thinking maybe a claw or a grabby hand would work well.
I love the idea of the new devices and printers panel. But It would be more usefull if for example, when a user
double clicked on the mouse. If it brought up the options panel where the user could set double click speed, mouse speed, etc.
Rather than the device properties for the mouse.
I also agree with what another person said about how when a when you click on a program that's in the taskbar it should open up the last
window that was selected.
I have high hopes for Windows 7, and I hope that it's improved even more before it hits the shelves. - With Firefox 3.5, Firefox bug (when you reduce it, messenger open itself...), is almost fixed, it happens on 0,1%... If also this 0,1% will fix, it's perfect...
Now I found another bug, with gadgets. It happens 3 times for now. With any windows open, the gadtes remain on top (and it's not selected). After restart, it's fixed. See this:

- Running Windows 7 on seperate hard drive vista on the other. My card reader worked fine on vista but does not work on windows 7. The device manager shows the drives as present but not shown on - devices with removable storage- in computer. Have plugged in a cf card with content still no show in computer, in device manager in properties for cf carder reader the volume is recognised and is listed as on line. Have tried to install driver for xp in capability mode will not install as system does not recognise the card reader is installed so won't build a driver etc so installation ends. Have done all the plugging unplugging as directed. My usb memory sticks are recognised and working normally. My Canon camera does function with the CF card as does all the software so not an urgent need, any ideas. I'm trying not to go back to vista.

I currently use an XP machine and I use MIDI a lot. On other machines I have that have Vista the option to use the SoundCard's MIDI is not there. In XP in the sound menu I could pick default devices and "Only Use Default Devices" which was really good, because the default microsoft DLS (GM.DLS) is awful.
I was wondering if there is a way in Windows 7 to make this the defualt device and to only allow applications to use the SoundCard's MIDI and not the annoying Microsoft MIDI.
For example Windows Media Player (and any other program) on XP plays MIDI files using my custom SoundBank on my Creative card. In Vista using another Creative card, the defualt Microsoft MIDI bank plays MIDI files in WMP and other programs.
This is one of the main reasons as to why I havn't upgraded to Vista yet, and if Windows 7 cannot do it too, I will just stay on XP.
If there is some way of contacting Microsoft to ask them about this I would, but I don't think there is.

When you open Start Menu (either with Start Orb or WinKey ), pressing Enter (without typing anything in search box) should open the All Programs menu.
IMO it would be pretty useful, since it increases the speed in which you can do smth, and that is kind of what MS is going for in Win7, right.
And Enter isn't currently used for anything if the search box is empty.

P.S.: Epic shoop is epic. - Here's a big problem... Now with support for DNLA, Windows 7 can push videos, music, photos, etc in your home network, but there a bug, when media player play the media in the other device, the plugins doesnt work, for example: subtitles.
I recorded a program from TV, becouse I want to see it later with subtitles, but when I push the video to my TV (in this case is a virtual PC) the subtitles doesnt show up. The plugin is a filter named VSFilter.dll and this is just for showing subtitles
Here you can see, how the subtitles are showed right in the current PC, but in the other device, the subtitles are missing
Please, I know than you dont care about people out of the US, but please fix this :) - There's a bug in WMP12 -- Alt+F4 doesn't work -- in WMP12 it just opens the main menu, instead of closing the application. This must be fixed, since Alt+F4 is a vital keyboard shortcut in Windows.

It is as folowed as soon as you log in you are shown not 1 window but 2 where one is totaly usles it is only toth as taskbar icon which it is show on mz print screens. Can you guzs pleese fix this,,, becouse when I use meenger i dont want him to be a task bar siting duck and taking up 2 whole slots in mz task bar!

NOTE that there is no conersation open no nothing but it is still taking up 2 slots WITHOUT ANY REASONABLE reason!!!!!- try using office 2007 it run great on w7(outlook is inside)
- You know what is truly sad? That Microsoft just ignores all the great ideas over here, like they didn't care at all.

- Clicking on Taskbar item w/ many windows the most recent window is opened
- "Eject " button in Task Pane when looking inside removable drives
- Middle-click on "Show Desktop " activates Flip3D
- Improved "turn system icons on and off" panel (drop-downs for booleans? ever heard of checkboxes?)
- Change volume w/ scroll wheel when hovered over volume tray icon
- Visually connect thumbnails and Taskbar items
- Jump lists in shown "All Programs"
- "Enter " w/ just opened Start Menu opens "All Programs"
- Pin anything (folder, file, whatever) to Taskbar
- Horizontal Taskbar overflow , with scrollwheel/touch sliding
I could go on and on for hours, but it's not like MS cares :'-(

On known good, modern hardware (Sony DVD-RW DRU-842A drive on a PCI controller),Win7 seems to having considerable difficulty with older CD-RW disks.
When both UDF formatted and blank CD-RW disks are inserted the drive will attempt to read the disk 'forever'. Windows explorer will lock up while Win7 is attempting just to mount the disk. Autoplay is totally turned off. Recovery requires physically ejecting the disk, using task manager to stop the Windows Explorer process(es) and then log off and back on. A couple of times things actually worked properly for unknown reasons, but each time a CD-RW disk is loaded it's about an 80% chance of disaster.
The difficulty with CD/RW happened on Win-7 when it was "plain vanilla" and no 3rd party burning software was yet installed.
I reboot to XP sp3 on the same hardware and and all goes perfectly - loading, burning, erasing, etc.

Please don't assume that your example and angst speaks for everyone. Again, this is totally a matter of perspective and assumes that what you find inconvenient is true for the world. I regularly have an array of Word, Excel. Acrobat, and other app windows open and find the way it is setup to be intuitive and incredibly elegant (not a word I often use about a Microsoft OS). My bet is this is the way it is, and they have't done anything for the very small number of people complaining, because it is something they got out of their focus groups during design. In response to "CAN YOU IMAGINE THE NIGHT MARE?????": I can beat that 20 docs and 6 pdfs most days and no I cannot. There is no reason to assume that everyone will look at your example and see a disaster meriting the all caps yelling. Not worth getting into a debate about this but two things:
1) Again, how do you know they are ignoring the suggestions?
2) Has anyone even read Microsoft's statements about the RC process. The fact that the RC was, indeed, to identify bugs prior to going RTM was hardly a secret. Likewise, that the essential feature set was locked was also not hidden.
People have, all along, been making suggestions that may or may not be addressed in a SP (or other pack). Bugs are what matter in the RC, not things people would like to see done differently.
Unless you know someone on the development team, it is simply not a justifiable assumption that Microsoft is "ignoring you." The history of XP and Vista (and the various server OSs) demonstrate that new features do get implemented in SPs, etc....
Stephen- After a lot of fight, I must say: BUG report: RC, but no Beta, it is almos impossible to change a second network to other than public and unidentified network.
Every windows was kind a nightmare to set networks (W98SE, XP, Vista) and sadly, W7 is not the exception. Hello!
When I must perform time-consumig tasks like downloadig big files or recording CDs/DVDs, I usually play a game.
When a game ends in Freecell, a popup appears showing statistics and asking if I would like to play again or exit.
The problem is that this popup window prevents any interact with the game window. It´s impossible to minimize as well as to move the game window.
From time to time I want to peek at the recorder (or file download) window to see it´s progress WITHOUT closing Freecell.
I know, I know. It´s very simple to make a mouse click to get the required window focused, but my question is:
"Is it really necessary to have the game window LOCKED in my desktop?"
Will it be fixed in the retail version?

We are not asking because WE LIKE IT!!!(cough, cough, like you, cough, cough) we are asking for it for a simple reason. THE reason the Microsoft build on, the reason of FAST reaching of things,,,
IT IS A DROP OF PERFORMANCE when YOU have to use up 15 seconds for an action which is REQUIRED every 30 - 180 seconds, while earlier you would only need at max 3 seconds to find it on the classical way, i am not saying that od way is good, it STINKS, this one (new one) is way bather it is just unfinished product, which this RC version is after all, and we are simply implying, precise to be begging to fix this lepsus made from the designers,,, to be fixed.
To sum things up the reason why this but shod be fixed is following:
lost time = number of opened documents * (number of times you need to go somewhere else, somwhere where you use full window/number of times you have more windows visible) * average 15 seconds
your equation against this calculation i am eagerly awaiting, please enlighten us oo mighty Socrates.
And for the last part, it is not difficult to conclude that you have no idea of programing, this inconvenience is very easy to fix, yes testing will take some time, but from a technical point of view the is only one more action to be added and some code to be rewriten, not more than 2 pages at most if i am right in the assumption it is written in C# or c++ which is moust likly the CASE (some more caps nja nja NJA Nja njA beee XD, (stretch tongue out) ppppplllllllllllll!!!)

The "Start Powershell.exe" button in Powershell ISE opens a default Windows Powershell session (black bg, white text, Consolas font). If a user has customized settings those will not be used. It is possible for the user to customize the ISE's Powershell to match their normal window but this sort of action is unnecessary and creates more work for end-users. The ISE should pull the settings from the users profile.
Also, these sessions use the systempath (C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowershell\v1.0\powershell.exe) for use as the window titlebar text, regular Powershell windows open using only the text "Windows Powershell". The ISE's way of handling title's is bad for users who use ungrouped taskbar items (not me, but still

Different people have different opionions and requirements and expectations. I'm just curious, what do you consider some of the major show-stopping issues that should be fixed before 7 goes on sale? Now with support for DNLA, Windows 7 can push videos, music, photos, etc in your home network, but there a bug, when media player play the media in the other device, the plugins doesnt work, for example: subtitles.
I recorded a program from TV, becouse I want to see it later with subtitles, but when I push the video to my TV (in this case is a virtual PC) the subtitles doesnt show up. The plugin is a filter named VSFilter.dll and this is just for showing subtitles
Here you can see, how the subtitles are showed right in the current PC, but in the other device, the subtitles are missing
Please, I know than you dont care about people out of the US, but please fix this :)

Thanks - I've got a comment on the taskbar notification area. To the hidden notification icons, when clicked or double clicked, the small window won't disappear. For me this is very annoying, since the application that I need to open has already opened, the notification icon window still is in front of all the other windows. I wish it fades out after I clicked on an icon.
- i highlight a few files and it should show me number selected, total file size etc. for some reason in the RC every now and then it asks me to 'click here to view details' or something like that. cant say exactly what since that now i've clicked it, it doesn't do it anymore. it will come back though. always has done before.
gotta ask, anyone else feel like microsoft did a good job with win7 but left the cretins who thought that:
a - clippy would be a good addition to office, and
b - that stupid damn dog search thing in XP

Actually I was surprised at how much the developer teams first with Vista and now with Windows 7 HAVE been ignoring the suggestions of the people who use their OS. We have a huge organization and have Microsoft Site licenses for most of their products. We have made reasonable requests with the Beta of Vista to fix the problems that made it inoperable in a Domain Environment and not only were they ignored for Windows Vista release but for Windows 7 too.
Luckily I was able to "hack" back most of the XP functionality that was removed from Vista/Windows 7.
Despite having a site license for Vista and Windows 7 when it will be released we still run Windows XP by choice simply because so far the new OS provide less functionality in a domain environment.
Yes they do have more "Gui bells and whistles" than Windows XP but as a network administrator I don't care about that. I just need an OS that runs properly with mandatory roaming profiles and security (like no access to browsing the network) where Domain Administrators are "real admins". We don't need an OS designed to protect home users from themselves.
I was worried about this transfer of priority from business users to home users when XP Home was first released. Until then Business OS were designed for Business. Luckily XP was designed for business with a home version unlike Vista and Windows 7 which are designed for home users with "business" just tacked on for good measure.

Just drag whatever folder you want (USB drive, Computer, Recycle Bin) to the taskbar, and it ends up in the Explorer Jump List. The special folders even keep their special attributes (you can right-click the Recycle Bin in the Jump List to empty it).

Faruk- Daghead, have you tried dragging one of the links to the taskbar? Or dragging an Explorer folder to the taskbar? Or dragging the icon from the breadcrumb bar to the taskbar? Or navigating around for a while until Windows Explorer creates a MFU then clicking the pin icon?
MRU > MFU in Explorer because folders are created and destroyed by users all the time. - It's even worse if taskbar is vertical xD
Why can't Language Bar be a regular notification icon ?? It'd use regular amount of space and benefit from new notification area.

Truly. Really Important. I installed two windows 7 on guinea pig mode, and both got very angry on it. I was asked to downgrade the last computer again to XP sp3.

New OS upgrades for $39 next month, only one solid. stable OS that works, every time, networks that find everything hooked up to them automatically the first time, routers that actually work, it all just works, and works well.
MAC OS simply don't works on 99,9999% of the hardware.I downloaded RC 7 and it's pretty, and boots fast, but then there's the driver issues, and the connectivity issues, and the vendor issues, and the multiple versions of Win 7, and ......If, as one poster here said "... Win 7 is like crack...." well, just say no.- What driver issues? My laptop (arguably the harder things to find drivers for) works flawlessly and the drivers were installed without any intervention on my part.
What connectivity issues? I've had no issues whatsoever.
Vendor issues? That's Microsoft's fault? Although even still, I've not had any issues.
Multiple versions is good because my grandmother doesn't need domain control and enterprise business features, I'd hate for her to buy those. Even if it was the same cost, she doesn't need that running on her computer.
If you've had tangible issues, let us know. - What driver issues? What connectivity issues? What vendor issues (self-built ftw)?

P.S.: Epic shoop is epic. Windows 7 seems to handle Meta data differently than Windows XP and Vista. Microsoft needs to fix it. Its either the operating system or its possibly the applications i am using to modify the meta data for my nusic files. for some reason when i use Music match under Windows 7, it thinks the "Contributing Artist" meta data tag is the "Album Artist" meta data tag. and if i type an entry in the "Album artist" meta data tag Music Match will not pick it up. and Yahoo Music Jukebox has a similar issue. If you import a song into that application with no "Contributing Artist" the song title will be used as the "Album Artist", even if you have something in the "Album artist" meta data tag. these windows 7 issues need to be fixed and now. i think these meta data issues may exist in other applications as well, but i do not really use anything other than those tweo applications and Windows media player 12 for playing, editing, and importing music.
P.S. oddly enough iTunes iTunes is one of the 3rd party applications that i tested that does not get the issue. I guess they are updating it to work with Windows 7.- A nice feature would be "Automatically delete files who have been in Recycle Bin for 3/7/14/30/whatever days"

iTunes has been using its own library for a long time. It only uses metadata when you first import the file into the library.P.S. oddly enough iTunes iTunes is one of the 3rd party applications that i tested that does not get the issue.

- As you know there are 5 steps to installing W7 RC.
During step 3 (Expanding windows files) it had completed 471 of 2200 files. At step 472, I saw a message that the computer needed to be restarted. The process tried 3 times to complete this procedure and failed to shut down and restart as required.

I am looking for a driver for the Technotrend TT-Premium C-2300 DVB-C TV Card.
The old driver delivered with the card only works with Windows XP, Technotrend does not develop a new driver.
With the old Driver Windows 7 crashes.
On the other hand, Ubuntu completely support the card.
Has anyone an idea?

The only good thing about Vista was Windows Mail! I'm trying Thunderbird and don't like it much. Outlook seems a mess.

Other than that - and so far - 7 looks AOK - BUG: Windows Live Mail. This program is a bug itself (I miss Outlook Express) but a bug that Microsoft can consider: IT ALMOST NEVER ENDS BY ITSELF!!!!! I hate this program.

Delete takes time to cancel because it may have already moved most of the file when you click cancel. If it was to just throw its hands up and cancel immediately, you'd end up with corrupt data. This happens on every operating system. - Windows Live Mail.

P.S.: Epic shoop is epic. - Windows 7 still goes into sleep mode when downloading any kind of file from the internet (updates, etc.) or doing purely HDD intensive operations (e.g. defrag) if automatic sleep is enabled in the power plan (which it is in the default Balanced power plan). It appears that, like with XP and Vista, windows is only checking CPU % usage and user activity to determine whether to automatically go into sleep mode. What it should actually check is CPU % usage, user input, sustained HDD activity and sustained network activity .
This seems like a fairly simple feature to implement, and it's very frustrating to have to disable power management whenever downloading large files or defragging and then enable it again afterward (I often end up forgetting to re-enable it).
I really hope this gets fixed in the final release. This has been a Windows problem ever since power management was implemented and it seems ridiculous to have to think for your computer every time you do something that doesn't require much CPU and then leave your computer idle for a few minutes.
If you don't fix this at least make it easier to disable and enable sleep. I'm getting tired of clicking on the battery icon (on a notebook) then selecting "more power options," waiting for the window to load, then clicking the button to change settings for the power plan active, and then clicking "save changes." Ideally, like I said before, it would be better to detect sustained HDD and network activity so the user doesn't have to manually put the computer to sleep when large downloads are finished. - Another power related issue: clicking on the battery icon in the system tray (on notebooks) only shows two power plans, "balanced" and "power saver." If you create a custom plan for either and activate it, it sometimes shows up with the battery icon but only after replacing the original plan which you created it from. I was increasingly frustrated with this issue in Vista because I liked making several custom plans based on power saver to control maximum CPU % when plugged in (e.g. 100% with active cooling to install programs faster, 50% or 100% and passive cooling to keep the notebook fan quieter and cool down the overall computer when using it on my lap). Instead of forcing one of each plan (excluding high performance) to show up when clicking on the battery icon, it should show the top 4-5 (or some other user-customizable amount) most frequently used power plans in the list, regardless of which plan they were created from .
The second part is equally frustrating because I often end up using customizations of the power saving plan most of the time (during weekdays), except when I'm playing resource-intensive games (occasionally on weekends), so I would rather have several of my customizations of the power saver plan show up when clicking on the battery icon rather than the Balanced plan and one of my power saver derivations.
Again, this seems like a relatively simple implementation that would save a lot of time and frustration when switching power plans. I realize that it would make the menu a bit larger, but in my opinion it would definitely be worth it (especially since the menu only shows for a short time while switching power plans). - When you install Windows 7 (RC) onto an exisiting NTFS partition the default option is that this partition is not reformatted. This could be a mistake.
I and others have noticed that if you install Windows 7 onto a partition already NTFS formatted using Acronis True Image then (if the installation succeeds) you will begin to see disk errors. Chkdsk will run but fail to fix the errors. The symptoms look very like those of a faulty hard disk but all such problems go away if you choose the option to reformat the partition during Windows 7 installation. Enough users have reported the same problem for it to be certain that Acronis True Image is to blame. But since it is possible that other disk partitioning and formatting software might give rise to the same problem and since the symptoms give little clue as to the root cause, I feel that the Windows 7 installation procedure should be modified to encourage the user to reformat the partition where there is no data to be preserved.

- I just loaded Windows 7RC on my Dell XPS system. I created a dual boot so I could easily boot to Windows XP. I have to say the installation process was flawless. I had one issue wil the Creative audio driver, but Creative had the driver for Windows 7 and all is working great. I have been going through some of the features and have had no issues except for getting the Accept license agreement every time you opened any application within Office. A posting on Application forum received the answer within 8 hours.
Other wise, no crashes or other unexpected problems. I will keep using and reporting any issues noted. This might be the system to keep me using PC's

da page :B - With the amount of space I'm using on the "superbar"; you'd think they'd dump "Toolbars" altogether and make the things notifications. I've already mentioned about this in relation to the tablet pc panel "toolbar". It's not even a toolbar . It's more like an icon. Hence the "panel" name. The language bar is much the same problem.

Light blue for everything? Eh. Aero? Aero doesn't always provide quite the right colour scheme I want - it might be its gradient style, because I think a black version of the basic gradients of Basic would be nice. Hey... I'm picky about my GUIs. XD
da page :B - Libraries are a nice feature, though they're also limiting, and shouldn't be dominant over the user folder.
In Vista, the user folder would appear beside some programs' open/save dialogues - this is now replaced by the "Libraries". There's no apparent way to customise this menu either - and no, I'm not talking about the "Links" directory. The only program that comes to mind right now that uses this kind of dialogue is Photoshop, but if you need more explanation - it's the side menu that uses about 4 large 32x32 icons. Recent Places, Desktop, [Username]/Libraries, Computer, Network.
Not all programs have this, and thankfully some have an option for their own dialogues (Photoshop CS3 and Paint Tool SAI), but those which don't resort me to having to create a library for something that could be just as easily accessed from my user folder.
That brings me to the next point. Under My Documents I have a Websites folder for my web design and creation. I can't create a Websites Library - because it's already in a library. I like to keep my user folder root tidy (the latter folders are debatable...), so I don't intend to move it.
Overall they seem like a nice idea, but too outweighed by usability limiting issues at this time.
da page :B - About that ^ dialog: there is a huge problem when viewing a library with multiple included folders -- these included folders aren't separated in any way - everything's just mashed together , without any separation or grouping or anything, which is awful.
If I were MS, I would banish this dialog altogether and force-replace it with the new one.

P.S.: Epic shoop is epic. - There should be an option to assign hotkeys to magnify in and out for the built-in magnifier program. It is annoying to have to click the + and - buttons on the program to zoom in and out each time, especially when zoomed in more than 200 or 300%.
Also the preview full screen button should preview the screen for a user-adjustable amount of time or just keep showing the entire screen until the user clicks somewhere. I don't like it automatically zooming in to a part of the screen after 2-3 seconds (it quickly gets annoying). - WinKey + =

The problem with this, of course, is that (assuming the default folder is FolderA) FolderB cannot be used to save files in directly through the library. You'll need to save then drag and drop in the window (assuming you are using "Folder" view) or cut/paste between the actual folders. - Still, they should be visually separated (new column, a line, or something)
And yes, the 2nd one is an even bigger issue.

P.S.: Epic shoop is epic. - I wouldn't know about replacing the dialogue; but what's the point in the libraries in the first place? Does it put all user Documents/Pictures/Videos etc. in one area? That doesn't seem particularly secure, because user's personal documents are... well, personal . Or is it collating together all "My [x]" folders? Not particularly secure again if you've got backups stored somewhere that you want to stay separate unless you specifically browse to that directory.
I agree that mashing them all together like that is more trouble than it's worth. It's not organised.
They're a nice idea - but I'll never find them of use myself. I much preferred going to my user folder. Maybe an option to hide them from these menus and Explorer?

It's LIKE moving all of those pictures into one folder - without actually doing so.- I use Windows Photo Gallery in Windows Vista. I prefer it to Picasa because I like the layout better. Anyway Windows Libraries actually work the same way as the Gallery does.
I actually FAR prefer Libraries to the Vista way of doing things. It is "easy" so show Libraries folder on the desktop but the hack to show My Documents is a lot more difficult.
The only hangup is the hacking involved to use Libraries with Folder redirection although I think I have got it to work even with indexing disabled on the server and locally. (indexing is useless in a domain again with 2500 users with millions of files)

for when viewing files normally i do not always care if i am viewing Windows Explorer in libraries mode or not, but if i am backing up my PC i perfer if Libraries view is disables at the moment so that i do not accedentally copy unwanted files to my backup drives. i do not like using software that does the backup automaticly for you. the last time i used software for that it messed up certain things on my PC and yet that software was vista certified.....- There should be an option to permanently set a program's priority. I noticed some lag in games I work on using my game creation tool, lag that wasn't there in an earlier Seven install. Despite this my idle memory usage is the same.
In any case; I tried changing the priority of the .exe running the game to High; and it ran smoothly. However I don't want to have to start up the task manager each time I use a certain program that needs it. I should be able to set the priority and have it stay that way.
I have 3GB of RAM... I want some programs to actually take advantage of this.
da page :B I think priority has more to do with processor time than memory allocation. In any case, if you're seeing delays you weren't before you should look at your installed and running applications as well as your current driver set.
- You can use Prio - it's a small program that integrates with Task Manager and lets you save the priority.

Dialog boxes and alike have frozen their parent windows since, like, Win95, and I don't see this behavior changing for a long time.
From user's oppinion, it's annoying, but for developers it might actually be useful (like, you must choose yes/no, and you mustn't close the parent window)

I agree. It could be useful (convenient?) to choose yes/no before closing a window. But I would like to just move/minimize it! (Not close).
If say:
-CD burned OK, then: close burner, close Freecell, shutdown Windows.
-CD burn failed, then: burn again, play another Freecell game.
-CD burn not yet finished, then: play another Freecell game.
I want to get rid of the Freecell window just for a while to look at other(s) window(s) and THEN decide if yes/no to close.
In Linux systems it´s as easy as change to another desktop. But in Windows we are stucked to only one desktop and in that only one desktop the Freecell window is stucked preventing to see others windows clearly and decide afterwards. :-(

Fernando.- This is my experience with the install and impression so far with Windows 7 Ultimate RC.
First my goal was to have dual boot XP and Win 7 and my system is:
My XP Pro install is 32bit.
My Win7 Ultimate RC install is 64bit.
Intel e8400 wolfdale
eVGA 780i motherboard
4 gig of 800mhz RAM
2x Nvidia 8800 GTX 512mb Video cards
2x Samsung Spinpoint 750g 7200rpm 3g drives
1x Raptor 80g 7200rpm 3g drive
Blue Gears B Inspire 7.1 sound card
30" NEC 3090WQXI-BK LCD
I moved all the data from one 750g drive to give Win7 its own space.
First Gotcha:
-After booting from DVD i noticed 1st that all the GUI based disk tools were greyed out for all disks other than the primary XP OS disk.
-Any disk i picked other than the one with my XP install would give me a "could not install on a dynamic disk" message (thats a synopsis not exact text).
-I logged back into my XP install and deleted the partitions on that drive but leaving it unformatted.
-I attempted to install again; same issue; greyed out drive config tools and "could not install on dynamic disk" message.
-I logged back into my XP install and configured the drive as simple but unformatted and tried again with the same results.
-Finally i decided to try the "repair" option on the Win 7 installed DVD which provided a command prompt option.
-Using the command prompt option i was able to access diskpart; selected the drive for Win7, deleted volumes, assigned letter and BAM! install worked.
The install was amazingly fast!
Once it was kicked off it couldnt have been more than 20 minutes before i was logged into the desktop.
The only driver that i needed to install manually was for my bluegears b-Enspirer 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card...I downloaded the Vista 64bit drivers and directed Win7 to the install folder. The sound card was immediately installed and works as expected.
Second gotcha:
-When configuring Win7 i choose the same name as my XP config for network presence (my router looks at MAC and Netbios name to permit internal and external access).
-Windows XP did not like this and hid all but the boot drive when i relogged after completing the Win7 install.
-The error was "name already exists" and i could not reactivate or import foreign drives.
-The fix was simple however; deleted a Reg Key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\dmio\Boot Info\Primary Disk Group. After deleting "Primary Disk Group" i rebooted; this forces XP to rebuild your disk identity group and the disks were again available as expected.
Now i have a dualboot 32bit XP pro sp3 and 64bit Win 7 Ultimate RC.
Everything appears to have the drivers installed.
My SLI dual video is work properly.
Sound is working.
My initial impressions are WOW! Win 7 is much faster in boot; manipulation and online than my XP pro install.
I have only tried one non MS "App" so far (ok: game) and it even seems faster.
My system score is 5.9 w/the weak link being indicated as my SATA /3g drive.
It could be my imagination but even internet access seems faster.
Using both IE8 and Firefox 3 on XP i ran 10 speed tests with an average of 12m DL and 3m UL.
Using both IE8 and Firefox 3 on Win7 i ran 10 speed tests with an average of 16m DL and 3.3 UL.
I repeated this test twice with similar results.
Impressions after a week of use:
I am still very impressed with the performance of 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate RC.
I have run the MS update without a hitch.
I have installed Java (choosing the 64bit Vista version as it didnt detect Win 7 and recommended XP 32bit). My java bases apps work without complaint.
Switching internet connections from my personal router directly comcast cable modem required me to configure a new network before granting access. I can see this as both a positive and a negative but it wasnt immediately clear what was preventing external access. After about 10min of digging and scanning menus however it was easily resolved.
I have installed my Office 2007 pro without issue. Word and Excel basic functionality work as expected.
I have installed Visual Studio 2008 professional without issue though i have not used it in depth yet.
I really like the way the task bar is setup up with the exception of the quicklaunch. I am still trying to get the XP/Vista functionality there but havent really looked too hard into it. It is not enable the same way the previous versions are (right click Start button> Properties>etc...). MS may have done away with it.
The task manager is a much more useful tool now; you have the same functionality as before as well as a new tab for services that identifies the PID associated with its activity and the networking monitor gives more information regarding connection activity.
This new builtin GUI based functionality will be very useful to desktop support / home support users (this functionality exists in one form or another from the command line).
I installed Firefox 3 without issue and it appears to function as expected.
My Harmony 1000 universal remote software is acting a bit odd in that it keeps reporting lost connectivity when moving from one page to the next during a configuration session.
In reviewing Logitec's website this appears to be something on thier end (a bug in the version of java they chose and embedded in thier application) and not related to Windows 7.
My Logitec G13 KB extender was detected and works.
Overall updates and installs have worked out smoothly; often detecting Windows 7 as the host OS.
Upcoming tests over the next week:
Install Virtual Server and import some MOSS VMs.
Configuration the system to use a second language.
Open sharing with my XBox 360
On the fly drive / partition modifications.
Play around with bit locker.
Do a full backup and restore.

- Both 32bit version on my laptop as 64bit on the desktop were easy installed. I used a transfer to a USB stick wich makes installation very fast.
Tried to install OE 8(vista version) but it didn't work. Somewhere there was a message that the OE8 will be available later this year.
First impressions are also very good, however I hardly had any problems with Vista, but it seems that I'm an exetion.
Drewes55 - Just my two penn'orth here. I have to say I like Windows 7 very much. That's very much in contrast to Vista, which I hated with a passion from the first use; my daughter's laptop was very quickly reverted to XP! I don't pretend to have fully explored 7 yet, but I've been running it about a month and I've had no problems.
I installed it on my main PC - yes, I know, but it was screwed anyway and I have plenty of others to play with if I need to. It installed nicely, found all the drivers, told me my graphics card is ____ (I know) but just got on with it. It found all my drivers except a few which it located online at first update.
I'm technically competent, as I teach ICT, and I like the way it allows me to do things my way without nursemaiding me through everything. One or two things were a bit of a learning curve from XP, but nothing I couldn't work out. The goalposts moved at one point - when I first installed it I moved the location of Documents to my D drive where they survive from my XP install - an update removed that method of doing things, though I worked out another way to do it. Similarly with my Favorites folder.
The only issue I've had at all was having to turn off UAC to be able to run my favoured mail/newsreader, Forte Agent, but that's my fault for using an old version; never found a suitable substitute, even in my Linux workstations. In that respect I'm glad that the dreaded Outlook Express has disappeared; I hated that and have been fortunate that I have never been forced to use it even at work. Oh, and it can't seem to find my card reader. It is pretty old.
I have now installed it on my younger daughter's alternative PC (she's a Linux fan but needs to run Windows applications); she will explore it further than I will, I have no doubt! But I have already made up my mind to move to the new OS; my main PC is aging so I plan to buy a new one in October when 7 is released. I know I could buy one now and get an upgrade, but that would mean putting up with Vista in the meantime; I'd rather wait! And it's unusual for me, as I have always liked to stick to "tried & tested", not jump at the latest new thing as it appears.
So thank you Microsoft; I'm sure you haven't got everything quite right yet, but it's way better than Vista ever was. - OE8 being Outlook Express?

MCSE, MCSA, SCNA, SCSA etc... - Regarding choices... One of the (long) list of reasons why Win7 is so much better for Average Joe than XP/Vista is the included choices for customizing appearances etc. But why can't I select a different file-format to work with in Sound Recorder? It looks like an oversight to me, but what if I don't want to record myself in 92 kbps WMA but rather uncompressed WAV? Or try out 8kHz mono IMA ADPCM, just for kicks? (You aren't telling me you're promoting Audacity, are you? ;) )
In all probability, for me XP is a keeper. I admit some excitement about Win7, but at the moment it isn't enough for me to migrate fully. - Oh, it seems it was due to my power settings. I increased the minimum processor rate (or something along those lines) and it seems to be fine now.
da page :B - I preferred the old Sound Recorder too, mainly because it wasn't just a sound recorder, but I used to also use it to compress WAVs.
Now I have Audacity so I no longer need it, but seeing what happened to the sound recorder in Vista was a bit of a unwelcome surprise. :/

I'm a 63 year old person who isn't into fluff, bells and whistles. I bought a system w/6 gig ram so I could do all the things I wanted to do without waiting around years for a slow processor/system. I do like much of the additional functionality in Win 7RC, but ... why not let me choose the kinds of interfaces I work with?
Maybe set up a Microsoft App Store or some such thing. I'd gladly pay a buck or two to get things set up in more comfortable ways.

- I have been using windows 7 since the beta, and after RC, I removed my old XP 32 installation and have been using RC as my main operational system since them. It´s a very good, stable system, and I like it very much. But, I would like to point here lots of things that I miss from XP. I know windows is "done" RTM is just a week away, and my suggestions will never happen in RTM. But, maybe in a future SP or another patch, it could be useful. So, here is my list of:
Functionality Lost - From XP to Seven
1) WINDOWS EXPLORER:
For me, Windows 7 is an amazing system. It´s fast and reliable. But, using Windows explorer now, after using the one in Windows xp for years, just show me that the new explorer need lots of fixing. LOTS. It´s, for me, the worse part of the system.
A) In xp, the information provided by the status bar is much more useful than the one I have now, be it in the status bar or in the Details Pane.
If I´m exploring the contents of one folder, xp provides me the number of itens in that folder, the total file size (sum of all sizes in the folder) and the "location" if the files are stored in my computer or in a network.
NOW, all I have is the total number of itens. So, XP statusbar, with one single line, provides me 3 times more info than The new pane in 7, who took 3 or more lines, by default.
I agree if I select one single file the details pane info is amazing, but I really miss the total file size info in the bar. We don´t even have an option to put it in the status bar (hidden by default). So, status bar is just useless now.
There is no way to work with large amount of data if I always need to select all files just to check if they will, lets say, fit in a removable midia, or in another partition, or so on. The file size is so basic information, takes so little space and is so useful, that I can´t even imagine WHY it was left out of the bar! Its not asking much, to, at least, put a selection, avaible by right click, like "Show file sizes".
Worse yet, if I need to know the file sizes of more than 15 files, I have to click "Show more details". and if I select one more or de-select one of them, I need to click it again. And again and again, everytime the selection changes. Why can´t a modern operational system calculate this in a milisecound? Wait. a system from a decade ago (XP) could do that. The real question is: why WINDOWS 7 can´t do it?
I already read it´s removed because of the new way libraries work, putting multiple folder together. Ok, I can understand it, but not accept it.If Im inside a library, and it´s soooooooo hard to code something to show the file sizes in that specific place, just remove file sizes in the LIBRARY, not in almost every place of the new explorer. Or, just add a option to put the file sizes back, for the users who use it.
B) There is no more "up" button. We have breadcumb now, ok, but what if I WANT the up button? Is really that hard to make a option to put it back, if I want it?
C) Toolbar in explorer can no longer be customizable. If I don´t want the "Burn" button, I can´t remove it. If I want to put copy / past icons there, for easier use, I can´t. It´s the way it is, like it or not, the user can´t change it.
D) When working with multiple files in xp, I could past a lot of files in a folder, having them in the end of file list, work with them, and organize them the way I want. After having all set, I just hit F5 and all files are organizated. Now, explorer autosort the files. If I put a group of files in a folder with other files, they just get "sorted" and it´s much harder to find the files all over the old ones. And, again, there is no way to disable this "feature" that I don´t want.
E) If I select multiple file types, like a doc and a txt or xls, I can´t open all of them. The option is missing. I could do it in XP. Worse yet, there is no way to change permissions or security options for more than one file. We need to set it one at a time. In xp, it was possible and easy.
F) Users can not move / organize files freely in a folder anymore. I never used this, and I don´t like it, but I know there are people who use it, and they can not anymore. It´s a feature lost, so, even if I don´t use it, goes to the list.
G) In xp, when I start a move or copy operation, a dialog appears and I can see what I´m doing. Now, a dialog that appears don´t provide the basic info, like file names beeing moved. I need to click to "show more". Why do I have to click it always? Why this dialog can´t remember the way it was in the last use and keep it that way? Why I need (again) to click "SHOW IT TO ME" so I can see something that was always there?
H) Re-open folders in logon is gone.
I) Filmstrip view is gone.
J) List view now have a strange behavior. If the file name in the last column in a list can not fit the screen, all columns change position to the left, to let the user see the full name. BUT, it just disrupts the workflow and a file that was right under the mouse now is in the left column.
I miss the old good behaved list view we had in XP.
2) IMAGE IMPORTER
In windows xp, I plug my digital camera. A dialog window comes asking me to import my pictures, and I start the process. There is a really nice and useful little importer. I can select all the pictures I want, name it and save it.
What do we have now? A nothing useful importer, who just ask a tag, and imports ALL pictures. Why can´t I select what I WANT and DON´t WANT to import, anymore?
3) WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER:
In xp, I could change tracks, volume, pause all from a nick wmpbar in the taskbar. Now, the WMP icon in the superbar gives ZERO possibilies. If I want to pause a song, I need to hover (or click) wmp icon, and pause in the preview. If I want to change the volume? NO WAY! I need to open the WMP window to do this simple action.
4) SOUND RECORDER:
It used to be a very versatile application. I always used it to convert wav´s to another format. Now, I can´t do that anymore. (In fact, it was the Jaabi´s post up there about this issue that motivated me to write all this).
5) TASKBAR (SUPERBAR)
With multiple windows of the same programs opened and grouped, I could click the icon to have the last active window in focus again. Now, I can´t. In fact, now, hovering a icon in superbar AND clicking a icon do the exactly same thing. Why clicking do the same as hovering? Imagine the mess if this "idea" becomes standard in the computer world? Come on, guys. Hover is hover, click is click. Two user actions, stands for two computer actions, not the same action. Just a matter of logic.
6) StartMenu
A) Classic start menu is gone. I don´t to use it, but I know lots of people do. It´s a lost feature, so, goes to the list.
B) When I click "All programs" it is confined in a little space, and I have to scroll and scroll to find a program I want. In XP, there was a good fly out menu, much more convenient. Now, there is no option to put it back.
7) SystemTray:
Network icon does not have an animation anymore. Nothing "major" for me, but again, lost feature, and goes to the list.
For me, the Windows explorer faults are what prevent this system from beeing the best I ever used. So, I hope they get fixed someday. Or, not fixed, because in xp they were not broken. will in Win 7 the Binary Prefixes finally be used or correctly, or will Win 7 still adress them wrongly as Decimal Prefixes?
Id like to see that there will be finally correctly differenciated between those two.

I can see the Decimal Prefixes have been used as an Temporary Solution in the early times of Computing. But since we got a standard now for Binary Prefixes, a change should be made. Sticking to Decimal Prefixes is just confusing, since many people dont know where they are used correctly (for connection speeds or unformatted HDD sizes), or wrongly (as in formatted storage space). As an example i often read people complain about HDDs not having the size they are sold for, and they blame the maufacturers of those.
But whos really wrong here?
You as the Developers of the most used OS can make a change here, and correct an error of the past, which is still around today.

- When installing my USB device in Windows XP,Vista, etc if the INF was not found you could direct the installation to your install directory. When installing in Windows 7 the install failed and I had to open device manager and update driver to direct to our install directory. Is there a way to have Windows 7 ask for the driver install directory on device install failure?

Bug report: trying to change the name of USB sticks on windows 7 64 bit under Atlon X2 processor crashes Windows Explorer. Under Phenom II 710 random behavior is produced. I had not see crashes, but sometimes the new name is not changed, sometimes is changed but after closing and reloading windows explorer it no more recognizes the label. Once the drive icon dissapeared, as is the drive would had been disconnected. Under Windows 7 32 bit, it looks like working ok.

Windows Client IT Pro Audience Manager for Web Forums, Windows Client Forum Owner- I was about to make a thread related to this, and then was lucky enough to stumble across this existing one. I'm glad to know that I can do shift+click on a window in the taskbar to get to the classic menu, but I wonder about the relative merits of making right click be the jump window (is that what it's called?) vs the classic menu. When I right click on a window, the thing I really want to do is close it, most of the time. Wanting to choose "remove from taskbar" would be a far less frequent choice for me. So shouldn't the jump window be the harder to implement option? (ie, shift+right click, that is) One suggestion- When we right click a window, my make us move the mouse to reach any of the options? It would be far more efficient if the most important right click option appeared directly beneath the mouse cursor, instead of up above it, requiring a move of the mouse. If "close window" appeared beneath the mouse in that way, it would be nice, imo, to be able to close windows by simply right clicking then left clicking, without having to move the mouse at all.

Microsoft: This Warel post is incredibely important. In particular about Windows explorer.
The status bar info is really vital.
Being able to select and operate (run, change permissions, edit) a much larger set of files, and of different extensions, Is TOO much important.
Is necessary a simple and fast way to TAKE OWNERSHIP of files anf folders.
I asked two people (common users, not techies), to test windows 7, so I can evaluate if the migration from XP to 7 would be smooth.
No way. It was TRAUMATIC.
The first one, asked to wipe out Win7 after being unable to find the folder-up icon.
I think that selecting the mother folders in the address bar, is far better, but people where thinking that they already had learn to operate windows. They do not expected to need to learn again. Is SCARY to them. Comoon people fear computers.
The second one got a dfferent username and password. He got a heII rant about no more be able to use his NTFS files. Taking back the ownership, and all the permissions even for a simple text file was so hard. It was so TRAUMATIC for him, that he asked to get XP back.
Remember, people already is scared and deeply pissed from Vista. They mistrust any new from Microsoft. They are scared, and default against upgrading.
Nonetheless, I think that migration to 64 bit is unavoidable, and I would not want to buy new licenses of other OS than Win7 x64. But I would NOT risk my reputation anfter an OS that scares people, or pisses them off.
I would personally switch to Win 7 x64 as early as possible. But I would not force it on common people at the cost of scaring them. NO WAY.- It would be nice if Windows XP Mode's windows would have Aero Snap functionality.
Since XP doesn't have DWM, Aero Peek is not possible, but something that Aero Snap-like must be possible, and should be implemented.

It would be nice if Windows XP Mode's windows would have Aero Snap functionality.
Since XP doesn't have DWM, Aero Peek is not possible, but something that Aero Snap-like must be, and should be implemented.

Why must and should it be implemented? You've already established (correctly) why it isn't implemented. As long as it is virtual XP, that will be dependent upon the XP OS that is being run virtually. That is, essentially, asking for a XP re-write to add a Windows 7/Vista feature into an old (now dead-end) OS, when the point is for XP mode to be something to aid in transiiton....
Stephen- If Virtual XP works in the let's call it "windows-only mode" (no desktop is visible), the XP windows should get some of the features the Win7 windows have - most notably, the Aero snap. That way Virtual XP would be much easier to use, and it's easy to implement - just add Win7's Snap code to Virtual XP's windows (AFAIK Virtual XP is already somehow optimized for Win7, so this shouldn't be hard).

P.S.: Epic shoop is epic. That'd make it pretty for some users, but it's bad news for Microsoft and customers like enterprise customers.
They need the people who build programs to make them work the right way, using standards that have been published since 2001 (any program written for XP correctly will work in Windows Vista/7... only the ones that used bad practices are crippled in newer versions). Microsoft let these things slide in XP -- the OS would just happily allow the programs to write data to locations that should be read-only, etc. In Vista/7, those are blocked (and some programs won't work because of it).
If Microsoft just made the Virtual XP mode look/act/run exactly like 7... even if that were possible (it isn't), it would take away the incentive for those developers to actually make their programs work.- The purpose of XP mode is compatibility. They shouldn't much around with Windows XP - period.
- Once again Win Explorer: I suggest a further option for folder and search settings : copy previous folder-view ! That means : if checked this option then you have the following scenario : Open folder x with view a, change to view b or keep view a, then open folder y and you have view b or a, respectively. If this option checked, it overrides the default or stored view of the opened folder.

For me, the Windows explorer faults are what prevent this system from beeing the best I ever used. So, I hope they get fixed someday. Or, not fixed, because in xp they were not broken. In fact, I just hope they stop removing good old features. Thanks for reading.
5) TASKBAR (SUPERBAR)
With multiple windows of the same programs opened and grouped, I could click the icon to have the last active window in focus again. Now, I can´t. In fact, now, hovering a icon in superbar AND clicking a icon do the exactly same thing. Why clicking do the same as hovering? Imagine the mess if this "idea" becomes standard in the computer world? Come on, guys. Hover is hover, click is click. Two user actions, stands for two computer actions, not the same action. Just a matter of logic.
ABSOLUTELY RIGHT- Aero Snap is just window resizing and positioning. What compatibility? Can't XP resize windows? Can't XP re-position windows?
Btw, Virtual XP windows do interact with the Win7 desktop.

P.S.: Epic shoop is epic. - To put it simple "when opening a folder, use previous folder's view settings".
I don't see much use to this, since usually every folder view is customized for that folder's contents, and I don't think it would be useful for the user to change them.

P.S.: Epic shoop is epic. I preferred the old Sound Recorder too, mainly because it wasn't just a sound recorder, but I used to also use it to compress WAVs.
Now I have Audacity so I no longer need it, but seeing what happened to the sound recorder in Vista was a bit of a unwelcome surprise. :/

WOW. I couldn't believe that it has been dumbed down too. I use Sound Recorder a LOT at work in XP for our Provincial Foreign Language exams. The format wav is essential as the servers are Non-Microsoft.
Now we have to use a 3rd party application if we upgrade to Windows Vista / 7.
I am still shaking my head as to WHY Microsoft would take away functionality that they offered in a previous OS and force users to purchase or run opensource software for what they could used to do for free as part of Windows.
Now the one push for Mac's is that they come bundled with so much really cool software and yet Microsoft is either reducing or eliminating the software they provide INSTEAD of increasing/improving it.
lforbes- The Task Pane should be user-customizable with buttons like cut/copy/paste/undo/delete/shoop, whatever.
And don't forget to add the missing "Eject" button in Task Pane inside removable drives ;) This annoyed the ____ out of me in Vista.

I see much use of this. Sometimes I want to have another view than f.e. details view! And I am not interested in changing the settings for each folder! And btw, are there not problems enough with "automatic" change of folder settings since "darling" Vista explorer? So, if you like another view for some time, you change it just ONE TIME and thats it! Other programmers seem to see use of this too, see Directory Opus and Ultraexplorer! OK, I can use these and I did because of some lacks in Win Explorer! BUT I prefer as a principle to use on-board tools!- Performance. All I can say is Windows 7 is a lot better than the Vista Packages. My machine with Windows 7 runs speed as fast as XP. This is a great thing because I can get work done better and faster. Thought there are some concerns that I have discovered but I'm sure Microsoft will work on in. Some of these problems are posted in my threads. And I hope I can get the answers soon. Visual. Like Vista, a new texture feel comes with the RC. there's nothing to complain about. Gaming. I like gaming better in Windows 7 than Vista. I enjoy the games' graphics in Windows 7. Networking. Plug and Play. (Of course, you can configure the network) Drivers. I hope the developers keep up with the existing drivers (that doesn't work). Please make it picture perfect finish. :)
- I'm glad to know that I can do shift+click on a window in the taskbar to get to the classic menu, but I wonder about the relative merits of making right click be the jump window (is that what it's called?) vs the classic menu. When I right click on a window, the thing I really want to do is close it, most of the time. Wanting to choose "remove from taskbar" would be a far less frequent choice for me. So shouldn't the jump window be the harder to implement option? (ie, shift+right click, that is)
You could argue that, yes, however Unpin... isn't the only option in the jump list (and close is there, after all) and I find few people close from the taskbar. I personally find jumplists useful because of tasks (WMP's Play all and Resume) and, even more importantly, the MRU/MFU/Pinned lists are there! I use these very frequently to jump directly to specific files quickly and expect the use of jump list tasks to increase in the future. Bascially, it has the most important option the the old menu and a number of other complexities tacked on. Yes, it can do both. I know. The point isn't that Aero Snap would break something in Windows XP but that it could break compatibility with something. The only purpose for Windows XP Mode, as of today, is to run non-intensive applications with full compatibility with older versions of Windows... primarily XP, as the name would imply. UX is a non-issue here, Windows XP has hit a point in its life where it will only be receiving security updates. - Could some Dev please kindly reply me on this?
- Wow somehow i manage to find something Buggy i didnt like. Here goes. This is the RC that has this problem. The Quicklaunch is not resizable, even after unchecking the lock Taskbar menu item. However, if i enable another toolbar such as the links toolbar it magically becomes resizable and the lock Taskbar functions as in XP.
- After launching an instance of an app who's shortcut sits in the quicklaunch; I no longer have the option to simply click the icon again to launch another instance. To achieve simply launching another instance, i would have to right click on the taskbar icon of the app i am trying to launch another instance of.
- The default show the desktop icon for the quicklaunch was a good idea, now i have to right click on the taskbar to select show the desktop.

I have to correct my opinion: I you click on grouped programs and you hover over another program icon, you see the thumbs of the previous group.
If you only hover on the group and you hover on, you see the thumbs of the actual hovered icon! So hovering and clicking are the same only at the first glance !
