Windows 7 network hangs, works fine in safe mode
- My portable is a Targa Traveller 826T with a AMD Turion64 1.8 GHz, 2GB RAM with Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC and Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG.
It worked well under all 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows XP and Vista.
The problems started with the release of Vista SP1. And exactly the same happens with 32 and 64 bit versions of all candidates of Windows 7 after a clean install.
The problem is this:
As long as there is no lan cable connected and wireless is switched off with the hardware switch on the pc everything works ok. But as soon as you plug in the lan cable and/or switch on wireless and network traffic starts the pc totally locks. Powering off is the only option.
In safe mode with network connection however all works fine.
I disabled all services with MSCONFIG but the problem stays.
No other programs are installed, it is a clean install. It seems to me like a buffer overflow somewhere.
When I had this issue with Vista SP1 I contacted Microsoft for a solution. They just said I had to contact the manufacturer for updated drivers.
But now with Windows 7 all drivers are from the install DVD so Microsoft put them on it.
Uninstalling the NIC and/or wireless drivers does not help.
- What else can I try to solve this?
- Can I somewhere find what is activated in safe mode and normal mode to find the problem?
- If something is causing problems after a software update is the hardware then to blame?
Any suggestion is welcome!

If you have another device that can work properly in Normal Mode, there should be no system problems. If there is no hardware confliction, the only explanation is that the drivers for the two devices are not compatible with certain system services that are only enabled in Normal Mode. I suggest that you try to upgrade the drivers of the both problematic network adapters.
If the issue still occurs when the drivers are latest, you may only enable the services that are enabled in Safe Mode with Networking and check the result. If the issue does not occur, some of the system services conflict with the network drivers.
The loaded services, drivers and driver groups that are enabled in Safe Mode with Networking are listed in the following Registry branch.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Network
You may also pay attention to the loaded drivers. Maybe some drivers that are not loaded in Safe Mode with Networking is the root cause.
Good luck.

i dont believe the windows 7 disk has drivers for your realtek or intel wireless, maybe i'm wrong. just the fact that it works in safe mode indicates that it is a driver problem. did you try to search for W7 drivers on the intel and realtek website? Also can try the "custom" tab on the windows update site (in safe mode) and see if it finds the drivers and chipset drivers for you.
- Since it works in Safe Mode, the most possible cause can be the security programs. Please temporary disable or uninstall the anti-virus and firewall, then check the result again. If the issue does not occur, check related settings. In this case, it is better to discuss the anti-virus or firewall configuration problem in related forums.
Arthur Xie - MSFT - I tried the latest drivers without result.
Also I disabled Windows Firewall without result. I have no anti-virus software installed. Only the programs from the install iso.
Thanks for your resonses Let’s disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps:
1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.
2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.
Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment, if the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue.
However, if the issue persists in Clean Boot Mode, please let us know how many network adapters do you have. And if you have connected all of them after startup, or just enable one of them. Also, please let us know if there is any peripheral equipments.
- Ad.2 When I disable all Microsoft Services in MSCONFIG, no service is left, so there are only Microsoft services.
Ad.3 When I click the Startup tab that window is empty, so there is nothing to disable
For trouble shooting I installed a clean install, nothing added.
The pc has a
1) Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC, so via a LAN cable
2) Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG
The problem exists with 1 or 2 or 1 and 2 connected
I also tried removing the Intel PRO/Wireless mini pci adapter. The problem with LAN still exists. I also tried another brand mini pci wireless adapter with a different chipset without result.
The Realtec adapter is integrated in the motherboard so I cannot remove that one. But when I uninstall this device in the device manager the problem stays with the wireless adapter. - Now I tried an old ZyDAD ZD1211 802.11 b+g Wireless USB dongle from Atheros Communications Inc. The setup program of this device installed in Windows XP SP2 compatability mode and this one works ok! Local network and internet work. Now I was able to load the latest Windows 7 updates which included new drivers for the non working Realtek and Intel devices.
But again after a restart when you also connect one or both of the latter 2 devices the problem is there again and the pc locks up- BearbeitetHenk Breewel Mittwoch, 1. Juli 2009 14:15

Let’s check if the devices load the same drivers in Safe Mode and Normal Mode. To check which driver is loaded, please launch Device Manager, find the device and double-click on it. Then click on the Driver tab and check what the *.sys file is. Please let us know the result.
If the loaded drivers are the same, it should not be driver compatible issue. In this situation, please let us know if there is any peripheral equipment installed.
Arthur Xie - MSFT- In safe mode and normal mode the drivers are the same:
For the Realtek 2 drivers are loaded c:\windows\system32\rtnicxp.sys and c:\windows\system32\RtNicProb32.dll
For the Intel device 3 drivers are loaded c:\windows\system32\drivers\NETw2v32.sys c:\windows\system32\Netw4c32.dll and c:\windows\system32\NETw4r32.dll
There is only a modem integrated in the MoBo. With this modem you can connect to the internet without problems. I uninstalled the modem but the problems stay.
No other device is connected to the portable
- I checked for Vista drivers and there are none provided by Targa for this mobile device. Is your BIOS updated to 2.81? That seems to be the latest.here.
How do you have the devices configured in the BIOS? Perhaps resetting all to default/auto and exit & save will help it work with Win 7, as the previous settings were for XP or Linux. It's worth a try. - My bios is 2.81. All settings in the bios are the default settings.
The driver for the Realtek comes from the Windows 7 DVD
Once again the system worked fine under XP and Vista before the release of Vista SP1. With SP1 and later, so also with Windows 7 there is this problem. - I do not know if this is of any relevance, but when you open device manager-system devices in normal mode you see UMBus Enumerator and UMBus Root Bus Enumerator. Both use umbus.sys.
In safe mode you only see the UMBus Root Bus Enumerator which uses also umbus.sys.
That is the only differance between safe and normal mode in system devices as far as I can see with the device manager. - Ta-Da! I may have the the solution. A similar issue on a Toshiba-Vista related http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista-7/749345-solved-vista-hangs-network-access.html
"The solution is this:
Problem resolved - it was WINSOCK corruption. I was fairly certain it was a software problem, but I had completely spaced on the WINSOCK. In any case, it is a really simple fix which makes it even more frustrating that it took me so long to remember. In any case, here is what you do -
To repair and reset the Windows Vista WINSOCK- Click on Start button.
- Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.
- Right mouse click on CMD and choose Run As Administrator. Allow elevation request.
- Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.
- Restart the computer.
Now if I can only remember when I come across this problem again in the future. "
Did that work? - LOL! I see you were there in Oct. 2008. Did it work?
- Sorry Nano, no succes. Back in september it was with Vista SP1. But now it also happens with a clean new install of Windows 7. That's why I bring it up again.
Hi Henk,
I suggest you disable the modem from BIOS. Does it help?
Arthur Xie - MSFT- Have you tried updating the AMD CPU information? This is for the AMD Turion64 from AMD. here reboot after install. Did it help?
- I would like to know the chipset version to search AMD for updates. What is listed under system devices in device manager? Hopefully, we can compare what Win 7 installed against Vista versions from AMD.
- Try installing the Southbridge driver from additional downloads here.
1. Install processor information update. Reboot.
2. Install southbridge driver. Reboot.
That should help the devices function properly. Did it help? - I cannot disable the modem in the BIOS, there is no option for that and there is no hardware switch.
Updating the AMD CPU info did not help.
The Targa 826T is the same as the MSI M635. I tried all the MSI drivers without result.
There are a 32 System Devices. I do not know which one you want the details of. No one has the word chipset in it. - OK. I am looking for something to reference the PCI bus controller, express root contoller. Did you try the Southbridge driver update? That controls how the devices interact with the processor and one another.
- The southbridge update did not help.
In System Devices there are
1) A PCI standard host CPU bridge, driver provided by Microsoft, Driver date 6/21/2006, Driver version 6.1.7260.0, Digital signer Microsoft Windows
2) A PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge with the same details as 1) If you have another device that can work properly in Normal Mode, there should be no system problems. If there is no hardware confliction, the only explanation is that the drivers for the two devices are not compatible with certain system services that are only enabled in Normal Mode. I suggest that you try to upgrade the drivers of the both problematic network adapters.

- My portable is a Targa Traveller 826T with a AMD Turion64 MT32 1.8 GHz, 1GB RAM with Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC and CB54G3/MP54G3 Wireless (inprocomm IPN2200).
I had the same problem under ubuntu and windows 7 beta.
It was solved when i changed the BIOS to an MSI MegaBook M635 (MS-1029) BIOS V2.70.
(the power on screen changed from targa to MSI Megabook, but this is not problem, because it have better look)
I still have a problem, which was not solved with this BIOS upgrade (or downgrade): The ATI Powerplay doesn't work with new ati drivers, but with the old driver the rendering is a buggi in some games. (for example in "Just Cause" the mountains are sometimes transparent (not rendered))
The new driver solves rendering problems, but when i switch power state, or it switches automatically (when i plug in ac power) the monitor hangs (on XP) or display errors appears (on ubuntu). Disabling the Powerplay solved this problem. - Mateakos, thank you very much for your reply.
I "downgraded" to the MSI M635 V2.70 bios and that solved the problem! Also with various version of Linux it works now.
I also have a Sony Vaio laptop with ATI video and also there the latest ATI drivers give some problems. When I switched back to the drivers from the Sony website that problem was also solved.
But thanks again for the golden tip. This kept me busy for one year! Remains the question what changed with the introduction of Vista SP1. Before that also the Targa 2.81 bios worked fine and after that the problems started. But I quess Targa will not update the 2.81 bios anymore.

- Hank, thank you so much: I've had exactly the same problem and didn't found any solution. With the old bios it now works perfect!
- Try disabling realtime protection in Windows Security EssentialsI had the exact same issue on my Windows 7 64 bit install. After hours of searching to see what was causing the issue, I found that Windows Security Essentials was the problem.Internet started working normal again after disabling realtime protection. Since my internet worked just fine after just installing Windows 7, it's probably some update to security essentials that messed some things up.Let me know if this solves your issues...
