    my old post:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/5eacd57b-b8de-4df5-886e-4b9d2b70f65b

So I didnt have much time in the last couple of months so I just started messing with the inplace upgrade thing a few days ago.
I have SP1, and I know I need a win7 sp1 installation to perform the upgrade.so theres this legal image of w7 sp1 iso available to download from Digital River
I made a DVD,USB, and just tried doing the upgrade from my HDD directly.
Every time I upgrade It finishes copying the windows files and on stage 2(gathering..) I get the following error:
    http://i39.tinypic.com/ifbl85.png
(I do choose to obtain the updates at the beginning and it just downloads 1 thing-1089kb(every time!!) - weird.btw it fails when I choose not to obtain updates as well)
SFC SCANNOW doesent work for me-it says Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
tried the clean boot(disabling services and startup items)
    tried disconnecting the internet cable
btw clean install doesent work for me

You should find the upgrade matrix. NOT ALL VERSIONS OF WINDOWS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR IN-PLACE UPGRADE!

im looking to repair my system and the page you linked says you can Repair-In-Place Upgrade
from win7 ultimate to ultimate...-thats what I need (repair and not lose programs and such)

    sorry if I mislead you

What is a Repair- In - Place Upgrade? Never heard of it.

If you need to repair your system, run your recovery tools, system recovery, restore from backup, restore to a previous time.

If you dont have any of those options, you will probably have to re-install using you system disc, and activate with your system key. Or recovery options if it is a OEM from the seller of your system.

it says you can repair the existing installation.

An in-place upgrade is the final alternative before you have to reinstall the operating system.
Note that it takes the same amount of time to do the upgrade as to reinstall the operating system. Also, some of your customized Windows settings may be lost through this process.

backup your files and make a second copy just in case

    then install it clean

if its not booting, find another hard disk and install windows on that, then after its installed, slave the old disk and recover your files

To be able tO do a repair install you MUST boot to the existing OS firsT

You cannot do a repair install booting from the DVD.

I am increasingly of the opinion malware may be present

get another hard disk, I assume your DVD is a factory pressed disk

then install windows on that and recover your files

assembly issues when installing several programs like blackberry desktop manager
turn windows features on or off list is empty
sfc /scannow wont work; tried everything
windows "Installed updates" list is empty

you can tell that theres a problem..maybe more than one problem
plus the in place repair wont work

judging from the mess the fresh install option is a the only way out
