System Restore RA folders
-
Donnerstag, 7. Juni 2012 19:24Back in the XP days i used to be able to go into the system volume folder and find the RA folders that stored the data backed up by system restore. When i had a "computer that would not boot because it was missing the system file, ie SYSTEM FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT \windows\system32\config\system, i would boot to mini xp off a hirens disk and i could just copy the system file and paste it into the config folder". In Win7 system restore data is saved as a shadow copy and i cannot find anyway to browse the files. Is there anyway to browse the the files for system restore in case i run into the situation described above on a win7 pc?

niether one of these links will help you if you get an error message on boot like i mentioned above.
SYSTEM FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT \windows\system32\config\system
Without the system file working properly you cannot boot into the OS AT ALL. Safe mode does not apply here, and you cannot get into the system repair. All of these things are part of the OS and with this message on boot there is no OS, BIOS only. So you either fix the file or you rebuild. If you read the above post all you need to do is replace the file with one that is still viable from the system restore files. Which takes me back to my original question. In Win7 system restore data is saved as a shadow copy and i cannot find anyway to browse the files. Is there anyway to browse the the files for system restore in case i run into the situation described above on a win7 pc?

Hi,
We can create a system repair disk. It includes System Recovery options which can help you repair Windows if a serious error occurs. We can perform Startup repair or System Restore from its recovery console. Please note, it does not include the restore points.

Based my research, we may not be able to access the backup file in Windows 7 as before.Kim Zhou

Montag, 11. Juni 2012 12:56Thanks for your response, however i understand all these options are available to me however i have multiple users and i am just curious if i can still pull files out of restore points like i use to be able to do with XP. I am not looking for any other recomendations. Just if there is still a way to pull files out of the restores in windows 7.

Hi,
Based my research, Microsoft has not release the way to access the restore points directly.
We can use Easy Transfer to transfer your files, emails, pictures, and settings after restoring the system. For more information, please refer to this.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/windows-easy-transfer
