Installed windows 7 on a laptop with internal speakers controlled by dedicated buttons at the top. No speaker icon is shown in the tray and no speakers are listed under the device manager. Also the buttons I mentioned earlier would normally light up when pressed but after the instal of windows 7 there aren't any lights on.

Of course Device Manager doesn't ever list speakers - speakers aren't an installed hardware device.  ;)
Audio Controllers, however, are (they're listed in 'Sound, video, and game controllers.')

Most-likely cause for you is that the drivers for your sound controller aren't installed (most lilkely because Windows doesn't know what it is.)
Do you have any "unknown devices" listed in Device Manager, and/or any devices that are in an error state (indicated by a ! next to it)?
Go to your laptop manufacturer's website (support & drivers section), and download & install the latest Vista driver (if they don't list Win7 drivers for you) that they have for your laptop.

    HTH,
    Chris
