I am trying to stream media files (music and video) to a PS3 using Media Player 12 in Windows 7.  The PS3 is networked via a wireless modem router with the PC as a media server (currently the PC to router connection is wired via ethernnet with the router to PS3 leg wireless). The network is currently defined as a home network.   The PS3 can see the PC and is able to stream and play all shared media files from the PC.

The PC sees the PS3 as an “unknown device” albeit on “other networks” rather than local.  Clicking / Right clicking on the play to icon in media player 12 fails to find any suitable play to devices.

Is the Playstation 3 currently a supported device for play to functionality?  Should I be able to establish this connection using play to?

Being a DLNA 1.5 compliant device does not actually means it will work with PlayTo. To work with PlayTo, the device must be a DMR (Digital Media Renderer). Unfortunatelly, PS3 is a pure DLNA DMP (Digital Media Player). Sony did not provide any DMR functionality for their device.

In DLNA, a DMR devices is a UPnP device that exposes the UPnP AVTransport and RenderingControl. These services are used by PlayTo (and other Digital Media Controller) to control the device from a remote location (exposes method as Play, Stop, Pause, etc). The PS3 does not provide any of these capabilities so it cannot be controlled by PlayTo (or any other similar app)
Also, the PS3 does not have UPnP discovery capabilities. As DLNA specifies, a DMP (Digital Media Player) it is not required to advertise its presence on the network. This is one of the reasons for which you will not be able to discover a PS3 in your PlayTo menu.

In order to have PlayTo working, you need a DMR (recomended DLNA 1.5 compliant, best a Windows Logo-ed DMR).
Thanks a lot and sorry for the trouble

No. It needs to be DLNA 1.5 compliant
