I have Virtual PC 2007 installed and I understand its limitation, but I'm not clear on what the alternative method for hosting a 64bit OS is for Windows 7.

Virtual PC doesn't support 64-bit OS's, so you're only option is to
use something else.  There's VMWare Player, VirtualBox, or Parallels,
    that could work for you.

VMWare player is probably more stable but more resource intensive, and
if VirtualBox works on your hardware, it usually works pretty well.
It's been some time since I tried Parallels so I don't really know the
    state of that is.

And then there's also VMWare Workstation which is more full featured
    product, but it's not free.

Thanks for the quick reply Bob. - I had a feeling that I was going to have to go back to VMware.  I'm installing it as I write this.

    No problem, glad to help.

fwiw, Windows 8 Client will come with Hyper-V which does support
64-bit OS's, as well as multiple cores.

the new Parallels Workstation 6 is pretty solid.  Picked up two copies when it was on sale for $9.99.

Has some of the nice VPC features like drag and drop mounting of ISOs.
