    Is it possible to have a parent disk attached to a host and have a differencing disk based off that parent attached to the VM being used at the same time ?

    Your parent disk has to be read-only, why would you want to attach it?  Any changes made to a parent disk invalidate any child disks.

    So that answers part of my question, i should be able to figure out the rest.
