    Hi guys,

    We have problems activating windows 2008 R2/2012 VM running on hyper V 2012 hosts. The MAK key works on physical servers but not on VMs. I came across some threads in the forum saying that a virtual product key is required.

    How do we obtain the virtual product key?

    The MAK keys work fine inside VM's. What is the error message you are getting?

    When we try to activate the windows 2008 R2 VM running on Hyper V 2012 hosts with the 2008 R2 MAK, it gives us the error message that the key is not valid with the OS edition. We are using data centre MAK on a data centre edition of 2008 R2 VM.

    Are you using a 2008 R2 MAK?  MAK keys have a limited number of activations.  Are you sure you have not exceeded the limit on your key?

    Yes, we are using 2008 R2 MAK keys for the 2008 R2 VMs. The limit has not been exceeded.

    Fortunately, you don't have a Hyper-V problem. I would make sure that you are using the correct keys/media combination. You may have to give the licensing support number a call if you are still having problems.
