KMS Activation

Hello everyone. I currently have a KMS Server deployment configure within my environment. The KMS server is working as it should. Activating both Windows 7, 2008 and office.
It doesnt activate clients within a child domain however. I tried to activate the client manually with the command to point it to the KMS Server.
Will I need to have a separate KMS server for each child domain or is there a way to use the KMS server within the parent site to activate all the clients inside the child domain. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I don’t think you have to separate KMS server for each child domain. By default, the KMS host is registered only in the DNS domain to which the host belongs. If the network environment has only one DNS domain, no further action is required.
If there is more than one DNS domain name, a list of DNS domains can be created for a KMS host to use when publishing its SRV RR. Setting this registry value suspends the KMS host’s default behavior of publishing only in the domain specified as the Primary DNS Suffix. For the detailed procedures to deal with the multiple DNS domains, you could refer to the link below:

Thanks James, for the reply. I attempted adding the registry entry but the key didnt exist with the registry of the KMS server.
I did however created DNS records within the child domain that points to the parent domain. Im currently testing this configuration. I will post back the results.

So I have added the DNS record into the child domain of the domain that the KMS Server resides in.
I need to add that what Im trying to activate here is Microsoft Office. My KMS server is configured for Office activations which work fine in the parent domain.
The computers are shipped out with windows activated already. What needs to be activate currently is office which fails.
I can activate from the KMS server using the Activation Tool.
I have ran the cscript ospp.vbs /act on the computer and it fails.
The computer displays the following error.
" The software Licensing Services reported that the computer could not be activated. No key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see tthe Application Event Log for additional information. To view the activation event history run : cscript ospp.vbs /dhistorykms"

Hi,
Could you please post the related Application Event here to get further analysis? I think we could find something useful there.
At the same time, please run the following command in the command prompt with evaluated rights:
Slmgr.vbs /dlv
Paste your export result here to get further investigation.

James

I apologize for not updating sooner. I have been extremely busy.
The computer is activating by running the command against the machine that points it to the KMS Server.
The computer however is not activating automatically even though the DNS record has been created within the child domain.
I will keep troubleshooting and see what may be missing. I will keep you updated.

Perhaps from client in child domain run:
nslookup -type=all _vlmcs._tcp
This should return the KMS server. If it does not return KMS Server, revisit publishing SRV record in child domain dns zone.

Dienstag, 20. März 2012 14:32Thanks Dave for the input. I ran nslookup with those commands on the local server of the child domain. The result displayed the record created for the KMS server. I will need to run this command on a local computer there as well in order to complete the test. I will keep you posted. Thanks again.
