Hi,
Yes, you can upgrade from Windows Server 2008 Standard to Enterprise.
Guide for Upgrading to Windows Server 2008
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755199(WS.10).aspx#BKMK_Supported
To do so, boot into your Windows Server 2008 Standard, insert the Windows Server 2008 disk and run it. Input a Windows Server 2008 Enterprise key or choose Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and then you can perform the upgrade installation.
Hope it helps.

Donnerstag, 30. Juli 2009 15:48I am installing WS2K8 Standard on a system with 8GB RAM. The Standard Edition only supports 4GB.
Can I upgrade later and capture the additional 4 GB RAM or will I need to do a clean install?

Dienstag, 8. September 2009 08:41I performed this operation and it went okay.
AD Certificate services requires additional backup (see the above link mentioned)
The Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 on the server did not start up because rights in the registry was changed and some settings where missing after reboot.
This is only some info for you that wants to perform the same upgrade

I would like to know the same as above... We are implementing DAG's and our Exchange 2010 server is W2K8 Standard. I really can't afford to have an outage at this time so if anyone has any tips...
Thank you

Can you do this upgrade while exchange 2010 is installed on the server.I need to install the DAG ,and the documentation was very misleading
victor arringtonToday I tested the upgrade server edition from the standard to the Enterprise on the physical server IBM 3550.
Since the beginning has been installed server 2008 R2 standard without any updates, then installed Exchange 2010 SP1. After that I made the check for updates and got 67 updates, but among them the first service pack was not in the list! Installing all 67 updates is successful, then reboot, then another check for updates and here he was the first service pack.
Without installing the service pack I run:DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerEnterprise /ProductKey:489J6-VHDMP-X63PK-3K798-CPX3Y
Reboot.
Check version, all at first glance good. I got Enterprise edition.
Now run the install service pack .... Reboot, one more ... everything goes according to plan ...
And here he is the moment of truth, when you log on watch box - service pack was successfully installed. Check the verson: 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1.
Some remarks on the upgrade:
1. I used the KMS client key. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff793421.aspx
2. tested only a single physical server.
3. I want to draw attention to the following update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976902
4. Exchange working properly after all the above done.5. All updates from Windows Updates
6. About DISM http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744380(WS.10).aspx
This is was test enviroment, 2 weeks later i want to do this on production server (have 32gb ram useble of 64 installed)

Hi Stanfordt,
There is a difference between licensing Standard and Enterprise versions.
If you are using MAK keys, when you upgrade to Enterprise version, you will have to buy a new key for the Enterprise version.
If you use a KMS server, then:
1. A version of the KMS keys does not support the Standard or Enterprise versions. (you need to buy MAC key or KMS-B)
2. B version of the KMS keys supports Standard and Enterprise versions. (you don't need to buy aditional keys)
3. C version of the KMS keys supports all versions including datatsenter. (you don't need to buy aditional keys)See also:

Hi,
is it also possible to go this way if I want to change license after virtualization (p2v) of a productive system (VL enterprise edition) to test system (MSDN enterprise edition)?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
we upgraded from Win2k8 R2 Standard to Enterprise with SQL Server 2008 R2 installed.
Everything was working fine for 2 days but then we had some problems (whole memory was marked as reserved for hardware in ressource monitor) that were probably caused by some mismatching memory (hardware) and old HP firmware.
But I think you should not run into the same problem. So I expect that it would work.
