Publisher 2007 - cannot open any PUB file - open file error code 1100009 with Office SP2
-
Tuesday, May 05, 2009 12:43 PMAfter installing Office 2007 Service Pack 2 Publisher 2007 cannot open any existing files that were previously saved successfully with Publisher 2007. The error message is "Publisher cannot open the file." After pressing ctrl-shift-i, the error code 1100009 is displayed in the lower right corner of the dialog window. I tried uninstalling SP2 but that didn't help. I allowed SP2 to be reinstalled and then tried repairing the Office 2007 installation. Still open failure. Computer is running Vista Business fully up to date.
I can successfully open the PUB files using Publisher 2003 on another computer; if I save them with Publisher 2003 I still cannot open them in Publisher 2007.
This is a major issue.
Thank you.

The following entry was posted on a newsgroup for Publisher 2007. The fix seems to work:The long-awaited hotfix has FINALLY been released. Tuesday, May 05, 2009 2:27 PMI've just had a user come to me with the exact same symptoms, though a few of her Publisher files still open. I've confirmed this as a problem on multiple machines in our organisation. I'm working through some scenarios now to try and find a workaround.
-
Tuesday, May 05, 2009 2:53 PMDocument opens normally on a machine with Office 2007 RTM (i.e. no Service Pack), and Office 2007 SP1.
Tried resaving the document, but the symptom persists on the Office 2007 SP2 machines.
Saving in Publisher 2000 format doesn't work either.
So far the only workaround I've found is to copy and paste the entire contents into a new Publisher document. When I do that, the colour formatting of text and background colours get messed up. -

I'm having the same issue. Is there a fix for this yet Microsoft?
-
Friday, May 08, 2009 3:27 AMCount me in as well. Same thing - everything worked fine until SP2 and now I can't open my files. Running Vista and all files were created with Publisher 2007 before SP2.
Microsoft, HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Little League newsletter due tomorrow and no second computer to open the files on... -

Are we the only ones having this issue? Microsoft, please provide a fix or work around.
-
Tuesday, May 12, 2009 1:21 PMI had the same problem last week, had a deadline to meet for a newsletter last Friday. Out of desperation, I completely removed Office and reinstalled (WITHOUT updates!). Works fine now but an extremely annoying experience.
-
Thursday, May 14, 2009 9:09 PMMe too. I am using XP, and I downloaded to Service Pack Update this morning. What a mistake. Now I can open 2 of my Publisher files, but all the rest will not open. I can't believe that Microsoft has not answered this problem yet!
-
Wednesday, May 27, 2009 5:53 PMWe have 150 Office 2007 installs - all SP2 now - and Publisher has this exact problem (can open 2003 but not 2007 SP1 Pub files)
How do we go about notifying MS Directly to get a Hot Fix?

Monday, June 01, 2009 5:44 PMIt has now been a month, and still no fix. We can't be the only ones with this issue, and millions of others have Publisher working just fine?

That's correct, we are now more than a month with this problem and Microsoft is not releasing any fix. Should we stay with SP1 forever? Can't Microsoft realize this is a major problem? -
Friday, June 05, 2009 1:14 PMI agree what happened???????? I tried doing a newsletter this spring and was not able to open my publisher newsletter file for it. Found out online there was the problem for many after SP2 was installed. Ended up redoing the entire newsletter from the ground up. I have spent almost 3 weeks on this! Finally finished yesterday and planned on proofing it today. IT WON'T OPEN THIS MORNING!!!!!!!! The only thing that has been installed as an update since I finished (which I don't remember telling it to install) is: Update for Microsoft Windows (KB971180).
Why has there not been a fix for this? I can open my other publisher files that are for our sunday worship but nothing with the newsletter setup works. That was almost the whole reason to have the program! -
Wednesday, June 10, 2009 6:17 PMWe are having the same problem (over 2,000 PCs). I contacted Microsoft Office support and they will be calling me back within 8 hrs.....
if they issue me a hotfix......I will definitely post the information to everyone unless they decide to issue a Windows update fix before they call me back. -
Wednesday, June 10, 2009 6:33 PMWe have the same issue (200+ users) and have been following this thread.
WARNING: Recently, users who have created NEW Publisher files under SP2 have had the file become un-openable, even after numerous open/save/close iterations. So this issue is not restricted to pre-SP2 files alone.
We eagerly await MS Solution.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 7:51 PMOk, no joke.....
Microsoft Office Support said the following to me just now:
"We are aware of the situation......there will be an Office update to fix this issue by the end of June 2009." This of course is to ensure that the "fix" does not break something else.
He did mention that if the customer has a Premier Support contract with Microsoft, the customer "may" be able to get the hotfix faster than the end of the month. Only other thing he recommended was to temporarily uninstall SP2 for Office 2007. -
Thursday, June 11, 2009 8:18 AMrchase14 , thanks for the information about the upcoming fix. It may not be ideal, but at least we now know what's going on - if only MS would document these things publicly once they are aware of them we wouldn't have to rely on relayed information from product support.
-
Monday, June 15, 2009 5:19 PM
Where can I get the update? I have many systems and my users cannot wait over two weeks for this.
-
Wednesday, June 17, 2009 5:28 PMYou would think MS would release an emergency hotfix a lot sooner considering Microsoft Office is one of their flagship products. I work for a school district and our techs have been pushing the new image with Office 2007 SP-2 to all computers district wide (over 2500 computers). I just found out about this issue today when one of the field techs notified us about a staff member who couldn't open her publisher files anymore. While we will get the fix installed before the beginning of the new school year, we do have some staff that need it now, so I feel for all the folks out there that need this fix sooner. Luckily we should be able to push it via WSUS before the kids and the rest of the staff get back.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 5:57 PMFor those of you with large scale deployments - MS has released an SP2 uninstall tool which you can probably script for mass deployment.
MS is offering no support on it, so use at your own risk - AND TEST!
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/954914
See known issues as this one may be more trouble then it's worth.
Good luck to all of you - and to rchase - thank you for reporting MS's response!
Most of us don't have MS support contracts and are completely in the dark. Being able to confirm that MS is working on this (granted, slowly) is at least promising. -

touble opening publisher file
i converted the pub file online to a pdf. then i could cut the text from the file. of course, I had to redo everthing else, but at least I SAW my original design and got the text. hope this helps some of you.
the original problem...
i think i opened a 2003 pub file in 2007. it gave me some sort of warning, but it said it could proceed if i thought it was safe. i clicked okay, and worked a few hours. i closed and saved. i did not save as. i assume it saved as a 2007. i tried to open it today, and but pub could not open it.
here's a fix i'm gonna try...
Go to control Panel - add remove programmes,
On the top left there is the option to view installed updates look for Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB948465) and uninstall. Reboot machine and you are done. -
Friday, June 26, 2009 6:43 PMHey all, just an update, the SP2 uninstall tool worked great.
All pub files open without a hitch.
The only issue I ran into was that it also uninstalled the PDF/XPS "save as" addin.
It can be found here for those not familier with it.
Simple enough to fix.
alterantely ertyghnbfr 's suggestion to uninstall KB948465 may also be worth looking into, but I haven't tried it so someone else will need to confirm. -

Friday, July 17, 2009 5:23 PMAfter unzipping, you have to locate the executable file and double click it to run it. It will be in the directory you selected to unzip it to.
I had the same problem on multiple computers and this solved it. -
