WIndows 7 and Outlook 2007 - Cannot Connect via RPC over HTTP

Friday, January 09, 2009 5:29 AMAny advice on getting Outlook 2007 (running on Windows 7 beta) to connect to (hosted) Exchange 2007 using RPC over HTTP. Setup seems to go well but I'm unable to authenticate to the server. I suspected IPV6 but have disabled it on the network adapter. Thanks.

Saturday, January 10, 2009 8:52 AM You must use domain\user, for instance I use sherweb for my hosted provider, their domain name is ihostexchange.net and I use this along with my sam account name which is available in their control panel.
For Sherweb therefore the format is " ihostexchange.net\[sam account name] "
The trick is to figure out the hosted exchange domain name, It is not necessarily your own email domain as it would be if you or your company were hosting the service yourself

Note that this domain does not work and they do not seem willing to provide it (something about Windows 7 not being supported and that there should be no need to enter the domain name as part of log on).

I too use Sherweb. I am trying to configure this but I am not sure where to enter what. I am following the steps here

At what steps do I enter the ihostexchange.net\sam account name. And when I go into Sherweb's control panel it lists the name with the rg cut off of the .org on my domain. Is this just truncated? Should I add the rg or leave it off.

On my account on Sherweb the sam account name is a truncated version of my email address
for instance david.flood@mycom.co.uk becomes david.flood_mycom.co
So the full domain\username entry is ihostexchange.net\david.flood_mycom.co
This is entered in the windows pop up username and password box during setup and at each login later.

I also use Sherweb as hosting provider and it works fine with Vista, XP, Server and every user on my network works fine, but I am use windows7 and I am the only one that could not ccess to the email account through Outlook.

Monday, January 19, 2009 8:48 PMI solved this problem using the above mentioned solution, instead of using user@domain for my username I switched to DOMAIN\Exchange_ID and it worked just fine.

I'm the OP and I too was able to get RPC to work using the domain\Exchange ID format once I found out that themessagecenter.com domain is named "shared".

I also have an account with Sherweb. I followed your instructions and also the Windows 7 instruction sherweb posted on its support site to no avail. Below is what i tried, am I missing something?
Your method: ihostexchange.net\kanji_kanji-d.com
Inputted this under the Microsoft Exchange Settings window in Username field and in the windows pop-up. With this method i get the following message: "the action cannot be completed. The name cannot be matched to a name in the address list."
Sherweb Win7 Method: IHOST\kanji_kanji-d.com
Inputted this under the Microsoft Exchange Settings window in Username field and in the windows pop-up. With this method, It does not take my password , the pop-up window keeps on asking for it. Yes the password is correct since i have tried it under OWA and the control panel.
Could it be that I have a hyphen in my email. Tech support mention something that Win7 beta does not recognize @. Thanks.

I just spoke with Sherweb and the agent was very helpful in getting this to work. We tried first the method which was posted on their site. That didnt work. What he suggested I do was to place my regular email address in the first field when entering my exchange settings. Then once I pressed "Check name" and the window pop-up appears asking for my information, I enter IHOST\SAM_ACCOUNT_NAME. That worked liked a charm! He mentioned that for some users the Win7 instructions posted on the site work fine, for some others, this method works. Below are the examples:
Exchange Settings Window: kanji@kanji-d.com
Secuirty Pop-Up window: IHOST\kanji_kanji-d.com
Hope this helps anyone else that is experiencing this issue.

This is also the setup that worked for me. So don't follow the Sherweb FAQ on this address: http://support.sherweb.com/showfaq.php?idarticle=319#Step 7 is clearly wrong: use the kanji@kanji-d.com format as stated above.
In the outlook pop-up, step 15, use the IHOST\kanji_kanji-d.com format.
I drop Sherweb a line if the FAQ could be changed, it's good to have the Microsoft forums to keep you going on testing Windows 7.
