    Hi There

We are looking at implementing a collaborative SharePoint environment into our organisation. I am basically an IT manager and make alot of the decisions within our organisation which relate to technology mainly network related. I am only young and have not had a great deal of exposure to SharePoint Technologies and have kind of had to take on this role of being head technical person on this project.

This is going to be a hard question to answer so I will try and give you as much information as I can. I am no SharePoint guru at all I have had minor experience in setting it up to work, moving sites and that’s as far as I have gone as yet....Like i said very minor...

Ok heres the question. There was some basic architecture put together which included a number of team sites in one site collection eg Company 1, Company 2,Company 3 than a number of sites based on a users role and objective in another, eg Operations, Marketing etc which all these companies contribute.

To get help on our architecture we have got some SharePoint consultants in to help us through the process as none of us are experts. They have basically said we should scrap it and set it all up in the one site collection and setup permissions so we just have the company sites but based on roles and they will see what they need to see, so if they are involved in something marketing they will see the specific list that relates to them in their team sites. Now this seems like alot more administration and I'm at the point where i think they might be over complicating it...Whether to make money i don't know.

We only have about 40 users maximum who will be using the environment and am wondering whether you have seen anything related to consultants over complicating to get more money. We have a whole development team also but none who are SharePoint Savvy. So the custom webparts they implement may need to be modified etc which will mean the consultant will most probably need to implement alot of it.

Any ideas..I'm just in a bit of a grey area at the moment and would just like some relieft that these guys look to be pointing us in the right direction not trying to over complicate things to get more coin.

Thanks fo any advise you can give me in advance.

"am wondering whether you have seen anything related to consultants over complicating to get more money."

To answer that question -- YES!  That definitely happens, but I'd say in most cases the consultants just aren't all that familiar with SharePoint. Now, in your case I'm not too sure anyone is over complicating anything.  SharePoint will automatically trim out links to content and lists from the navigation and search that users can't access.  This is called security trimming.

In addition, multiple site collections is almost always more complex than going with a single one.  There are very valid reasons to go with multiple site collections, but from what you've said I'm not if I'd recommend them either.

My advice to you would be that if your consultants are telling you something you don't understand then make them explain their reasoning. SharePoint is a pretty big topic and it is easy to get overwhelmed.  How many hours are they charging you for all this?  If it is simple I wouldn't expect it to be more than 40-80.
