Answered H55 Chipset MB will not load HECI drivers

HI all,  I have a new Windows 7 Ult, 64 bit install on a H55 chipset motherboard from Gigbyte.  In device manager, there is an uninstalled device called "Simple communications controller".  When I try to load the HECI driver, it throws an error that the harware is insufficient to install this driver.  I have the processor below that does support hardware virtualization.  Gigabyte thinks the driver should load.  Trying to figure out if its a bad MB or processor.

    Intel Core i5-661 Clarkdale 3.33GHz LGA 1156 87W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Model BX80616I5661 - Retail

Has anyone run into this before?  Thanks

    Nano.....you da man!

The Intel H55 MEI driver worked!  I downloaded it, executed it and EUREKA!  Device manager is a happy camper.  yeah!!!

So my adventure continues.  Thanks so much for your help and time you spent. (you too Thomas!)   I was getting the packaging ready to send the MB back.   I think Gigabyte owes us for all the time and frustration.  I will relay the the solution the their helpdesk with your permission of course.

I just might go fishing this weekend!

    Have a great evening!

    Hi Fish4life,
I recommend running the two automatic update utilities from Intel. Reviewing the support page at Intel here  for the H55 chipset reveals that after installing a new OS the drivers available should be installed. The graphics driver for the processor, the chipset inf, and the the storage manager.

The readme for the chipset inf (sec 9G) recommends a manual installation after the OS is installed.

Therefore, I feel it would be easiest to just run the two auto update utilities from Intel to get the motherboard and processor drivers installed. One here for the processor graphics and one here for the others. Try it. It won't hurt anything. Confirm all the features are enabled in the BIOS first. Post your result.

    Hello,

In addition to Nano's comments, you can first try to install the driver via windows update and see if the driver cannot be found:

    1. Click Start Menu, type “devmgmt.msc” (without quotation marks) in the “Start Search” box and press Enter.
    2. Locate the "Simple communications controller" and choose "Update driver software...".
    3. Click Search automatically for updated driver software to install the driver from windows update.

Thank you for your replies...it is much appreciated.

Nano, I have installed the latest drivers for graphics, chipset, and storage manager.  I went ahead and reinstalled from the Intel website just to be sure and the result is the same.  It still thows the error installing the HECI driver from Gigabyte.  All other hardware seems to be fine and the event logs are showing no issues at all.  Correct me if I am wrong but I am assuming that this driver is necessary for using the hardware virtualization features.  I have not attempted that at this point.

Thomas, I am away from the machine until tonight but I had one question.  Is your procedure any different than going into Device Manager, right clicking the device, and clicking update driver?  I choose the option to check Windows Update.  It goes out and looks and comes back unable to locate a driver.  Let me know if your procedure might produce a different result.  In any event, I will try tonight.

I am starting to think there may be an issue with the processor or MB or both.

    Thanks all

Let's try and identify the hardware represented by simple communications controller.

If you go in device manager, right-click on the pci simple communications controller, go in properties and then go in details, drop-down menu, hardware_id.  You will see a code like per example PCI/VEN_8086&DEV_27D8&SUBSYS...

The VEN code means vendor and the DEV code means device: in my case the vendor is 8086 and the device is 27D8.

Once you have the two codes, we can then identify the device. It could be a modem, usb bus, audio, etc.

Then you can find the driver. Also, installing the driver from device manager and pointing to the unpacked driver files ( instead of letting it search) may force it take.

Have you contacted Gigabyte e-mail support?

    Hi Nano,

Thanks for the reply.  Here is the hardware ID(s) That are disp;alyed:

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B64&SUBSYS_3B641458&REV_06
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B64&SUBSYS_3B641458
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B64&CC_078000
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3B64&CC_0780

yes I have been in contact with Gigabyte and according to them, the Mb/processor combo has been tested and it installs fine in the lab. (although I am asking for verification of that).

You have me intriqued....where can I decifer the codes?

    Thanks much

You can search here : http://www.pcidatabase.com/.

It's what you thought it was - 8086 is vendor id for Intel ... the device is not recognized in the search database. Google provides too many results, but some are HECI.

So, what's your motherboard model number?

When you run the driver install, does it unpack to a folder somewhere on the drive?

    Nano,

Here is the model and link of the MB

GIGABYTE GA-H55M-UD2H LGA 1156 Intel H55 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
    Item #: N82E16813128421

The driver folder structure is unpacked on the driver CD that was included.  It also matches the new driver sent by Gigabyte.

Yes in my searches it does point to eithter the Managed engine interface or HECI.

I am running out of options.  I have authorization to RMA the MB and the processor.  I just cant nail it down.  I sure appreciate your efforts.  I have purchase many products from Gigabyte and Intel and have never been dissapointed.  I guess I am in a state of denial...:)

    Fish4life,
Those drivers are only available with the motherboard (manufacturer's) driver disc. I thought I could view the driver.

One old thread that I reviewed, the individual ran the driver install package in compatibility mode for Vista and it successfully installed. I don't know why that would work, but I thought I would offer that idea.

The link to the method is here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/80cae5ee-dc98-4a2f-8284-a1ab826059b7
Intel provides the drivers to the OEM's. I have not been able to find that package on their site.

I have a feeling that the HECI driver needs to be installed during the OS installation from the add drivers option on the select a drive page during a clean installation.

What happens if you uninstall the pci simple controller when in device manager, close out of device manager and immediately reboot? Have your drivers ready for Windows if it asks for drivers.

That's great! Lucky on that one. Not all manufacturers are up to speed with 64-bit as they would have you believe. Those machines require some extra work. I just couldn't find the driver faster. It's a secret.

    Good Luck with the system!
