Upgrade Windows 7 Prof system to Windows 8 using OEM Recovery DVD

    Question

  • We have tried  upgrading  a Windows 7 Prof system with Windows 8 OEM Recovery DVD. We get the following error:

"Configuration sets are only supported when Windows installation is started from Windows PE".

    We follow the following procedure:

    1) Boot up system thru' Windows 7 Prof OS.

    2) Run Setup using the Windows 8 OEM Recovery DVD.

Immediately we get the error given above.

    3) If we use the Windows 8 media provided by Microsoft the upgrade goes thru' smoothly.

    4) The OEM Recovery DVD has a customised autounattend.xml with the OEM details.

    Please give us a solution.

    Thanks.

  • Most OEM media does not provide an Upgrade option which is why your receiving this message.  This is recovery media (as you stated) and thus its meant to recover from a failure (bad hdd, corrupt OS, etc) and not to upgrade an existing OS.  You will have to boot to that disc and reinstall Windows from scratch.  This is customized by the OEM (hp, dell, acer??) and its a custom image created by that OEM and your best bet might be to contact that OEM for a possible workaround or they could send you an upgrade disc if you feel you should have one.

Be kind and Mark as Answer if I helped.

  • In order to upgrade an existing Windows 7 Pro operating system to Windows 8 Pro, you will need to purchase a conventional retail Windows 8 Pro Upgrade edition.
