Export to Excel Fails with "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

    Question

  • We have a couple of report servers all hosted internally on VMs.  They are all SSRS 2008 R2.

For all of these, when viewing the reports remotely in IE, they run fine.  However when we try to export them to excel, a new tab opens in IE, but the tab just displays with "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

There are no other errors and it never progresses to save or open.

THE SSRS log files dont contain any errors either so i dont think its a resource issue, but they do say steam=''

  • Well, after going back and forth with the IT guys for a while on this, eventually some windows updates were installed on the host vm server.

The exports started working after that!

  • I should add that it works locally on the machine but i am an admistrator. The export to excel only fails when running remotely.

Also for whatever reason the network guys have installed IE 7 on those VMs. Is that likely to cause any problems?  When i'm running it remotely i'm using IE 9.

    Exporting to PDF is ok.

  • Hello,

Since you have motioned that it is work well in IE7 on the VM. We can try to enable the compatibility view of the IE to troubleshooting the issue.
    Reference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2536204

Based on your description, the issue is just occur when view the report remotely. The issue may relate to Internet Explorer, please refer to the following methods:

    Hope this helps.

  • Thank you for your reply,

Compatibility view makes no difference, and i would be surprised if it is that because other remote servers are working fine for me.

The Diagnostics tool didnt find any problem, and resetting the modem won't help, it is only these view internal VMs that are not working.  Some other internal VMs ARE working and a lot of our remote servers are also working fine through the same browser.

I deleted my browsing history but it did nothing.

The article you posted doesnt apply.  I am not having problems connecting to the internet, i am not having problems connecting to reporting services and running reports. I am only having problems exporting them to excel.

  • I get the same error trying to export to Word.

However when i navigate to other report servers, these two options work fine.

  • Do you have any security software on your machine, like an antivirus?  Try disabling that... Other than that, if you can identify when it stopped working you could work with your desktop folks to identify any patches that may have been installed or security configurations that have changed that may have an impact.

  • It has never worked since the machine was created. There is antivirus software on the machine, we disabled it temporarily yesterday but it did not seem to get the export working.

We tried patching SQL Server and SSRS yesterday to service pack 2, but that did not solve the problem.

  • When you click to save it as excel, it opening in a new tab is correct.  Maybe consider looking at internet explorer options to see if they are interfering.

  • But how come this same version of internet explorer works with our other reports servers??
    Tuesday, March 18, 2014 9:41 PM
  • I just followed all the steps in that article - i am pretty sure its not IE because it doesnt work in any other browser either.

And this version of IE DOES work with other report servers.

    Anyone????

  • Does the report have a large number of rows?  Say over 65000?  It could be a compatibility issue with the Excel file format.
    Thursday, March 20, 2014 3:00 PM
  • No, its a small report, and the same report exports to excel fine on other servers.

We dont get the rows error, it doesnt even get that far.
