How to image thin clients (WES7) using SCCM 2012 sp1

    Question

  • I have created task sequences to deploy a captured thin client image ( which works and deploys fine when using WDS) but when it is deployed via SCCM 2012 sp1 to the thin client it never actualy deploys. It sits in the software centre but never reboots the machine to run the task sequence.

I was hoping for someone to help with steps and requirements on deploying images to WES7 machines using SCCM 2012?

  • What happens if you start the installation in Software Center? Have you already tried that?

  • Yes it sits at 0% and doesn't progress when started from there manualy, even when it starts automatically it stays at 0%.

I can't seem to find a specific area in SCCM for embedded imaging, in embedded device manager 2011 there was a section for embedded task sequences. Is there such a section in SCCM 2012 sp1 and i missing something?

As it is i have created a task sequence like i would for a Win 7 machine, i'm wondering if there is another process i have to follow for embedded?

  • Does the Task sequence progress UI show up?

Can you please check execmgr.log ?

  • Please see this thread...

I am not sure your issue is anything to do with WES7.  There does appear to be an issue with content location checking when running task sequences from Software Center.  I have reproduced the issue in both RTM and Sp1 Beta.  I now have a case open with PSS.

We still do not understand the root cause but it seems to be related to packages, task sequences only referencing applications do not appear to experience the issue.  If you check the CAS.log on the client you may see a significant delay in processing each package location request (about 50-60 seconds per package), it also seems to check each package multiple times.

One thing that seems to make a difference is whether the deployment is set to available or required.  If you configure your deployment to be required with a schedule of "as soon as possible" and let the SCCM agent initiate the task sequence (do not click "install" in Software Center) then there is a significant decrease in the delay.  In my own testing an available deployment can take 18-24 hours to perform content location checking, when set to required it takes less than 1 hour.

I will update the other thread if we manage to get to the bottom of the problem.

    Regards,

    Mark.
