MDT - A connection to the deployment share (\\SERVER\DeploymentShare$) could not be made. The deployment will not proceed.

    Question

  • Hi, I need some help.  After looking at some postings related to this error message, this is what we currently do in out envrionment:

    We scrub the hard drive on the workstation/laptop and we use a boot disk to connect to our local image server via CD.

    The thing is that the local image server was behind on patches for a long while that it was finally up to date with Dec 2011 patches.  Since the patch update, MDT only works for some machine (example Lenovo M55 and T510).  I cannot get the X200 or the T500 to connect.  Like I mentioned, before the patches I was able to, and now I cant.  I thought it was the drivers so I went to download the new X200 Ethernet driver, injected the drivers, updated the Deployment Share and created a new disk.

    I have confirmed that the network cable that I am using works.  I checked my local server name and both IP and name is valid.  I checked the log on the X200 and this is what i found in the BDD.log:

    In the Deployment Share, I have the following:

    Network (UNC) patch: \\SERVER\DeploymentShare$
    Local Patch: C:\DeploymentShare

    Rules:
    [Settings]
    Priority=Default
    Properties=MyCustomeProperty

    [Default]
    OSInstall=Y
    SkipAppsOnUpgrade=YES
    SkipAdminPassword=YES
    SkipProductKey=YES

    Bootstrap.ini:
    [Settings]
    Priority=Default

    [Default]
    DeployRoot=\\SERVER\Deploymentshare$

    I usually put in my credentials to authenticate once the CD connects to the server and displays the window to choose deployment.  I checked all accounts and they are not locked out.

    I have also read that changing the \\SERVER to \\IP will resolve the problem.  I did change it in the Bootstrap.ini but not in the Network UNC path.  That didnt work after I updated Deployment Share and again, creating a new disk.  I have also read that updating MDT to Update 1 will fix that problem but I dont know the pros and cons to this update.  If my current version of MDT was working before, why would it stop now for some machine models after the upgrade?  Some say firewall but I dont know.  I dont play around MDT that much but I still want to learn and try to fix this issue.

    Sorry for the long story but any ideas?

  • I have seen this error occur a couple of times in my environment however a simple reboot of my server cleared everything up.  I hate giving this type of advice because it is so cliche but sadly it worked for me.

  • Thats what I thought too...but I have rebooted a couple times already and still no luck.

  • I know i might be stating the obvious here please check the following :

    1. IP address

    2. DNS entries

    I had a similar issue while back where i had the wrong DNS info.

  • It sounds like it cant even access the network because it is not finding a driver for the network card. Press F8 upon entering PE mode (I assume this is PE you are talking about, otherwise my point is moot), and type ipconfig. You should have a Local Area Connection listed, along with a valid IP. You should also be able to ping your server.

    Are you getting this far? If not, you need to look into injecting drivers through the MDT interface.

  • I noticed that some patch like framework 3.5 SP1 change little things into WDS otherwise, no change up to 2012 beta 2.

    Do you try to remove olds drivers, or a fresh installation ?

    Drivers are certifieds ?

    (I use DeployRoot=\\%WDSSERVER%\Deploymentshare$ in the bootstrap.ini)

  • I've experienced the same problem and have resolved it by wiping the hard drive. There have been situations where I've had to add a network driver and create a new boot iso. I did make the switch from using DNS to IP and that seem to reduce the amount of connection problems, which you mentioned you have already done.

    One thing I always suggest to my team members is to use their computer using that network cable to try connecting to \\IP\deploymentshare$ and running the BDD_Autorun file inside the Scripts folder. If it can't connect then it may be a problem with that connection reaching the server.
