Windows 8 Pro - Activation

    Question

  • I downloaded Windows 8 Professional, as an ISO and installed it onto a new computer from the Windows Intune Admin / Management.  After the installation was complete, I cannot seem to enter a product key, nor can i activate the computer.  The error code that comes back:

    0xC004F074

The software licensing service reported that the product could not be activated.  No key management Service (KMS) could be contacted.  Please see the application log for additional information.

  • Can you try running this from an Administrator Command Prompt:

At the command prompt, type the following commands:

    slmgr.vbs -ipk <your product key here>

Hit Enter on your keyboard then type:

    slmgr.vbs -ato

Let me know if that works,

    Thanks,

    Jon

  •  downloaded Windows 8 Professional, as an ISO in 2012 and installed it onto a new computer from TechNet.  PC crashed an reloaded about 2 months ago.  I initially ran into a problem with both Office 2013 AND Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit where I was unable to Activate.  I have since reverted to Office 2010 with my focus on activating 8 Pro.  I have spent hours on (2 Seperate) Chat sessions with TecthNet person.

My Computer -Properties displays: Product ID  Not available.

    I tried "slmgr.vbs -ipk <your product key here>" to no avail .  Eror messages states : 0XC004f050.

My subscriber ID is Subscriber ID:1203515177.

The Tech and I parted ways for the 2nd time with no solution.  Here is the partial dialogue we had.  I apologize to everyone about this long thread.  I have eliminated product keys for security purposes:

    Conversation Late Last Night:

Noah: Your product key is valid.
David Kay: I do not have media. Tell me how to enter the key and I will send you error message.
Noah: Press <Windows+R> to enter run box, and then input <SLUI 4> to change product key.
    Noah: No.
    Noah: SLUI 3
    Noah: Not 4.
    David Kay: I found this:
    David Kay: en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440
Noah: This is the right file name.
Noah: Okay, you may follow my instruction to change product key.
Noah: Press <Windows+R> to enter run box, and then input <SLUI 4> to change product key
Noah: Or you could move your mouse to the left corner of your screen, then right click, there is <run>, click that and then input <slui 3>
Noah: After that, paste your product key in the activation wizard, make a screenshot first.
Noah: And then click Activate button.
Noah: If there is any error, make another screenshot and send them to me.
    David Kay: Sent
Noah: As I mentioned, you may input SLUI 3.
    Noah: Not SLUI 4
    David Kay: OK
Noah: I reply your Email, and that is the wizard after input SLUI 3?
    David Kay: sent
    Noah: Not that.
    Noah: Input SLUI 3.
David Kay: This is what happens when enter SLUI 3
Noah: SLUI 3 is not this telephone activation.
Noah: SLUI 3 will let you change product key.
    Noah: One second.
    Noah: What about SLUI 4?
David Kay: "Find phone numbers for this activation".
Noah: Yes, that is SLUI 4
Noah: Now you may close that window.
Noah: And then input SLUI 3 in your run command.
David Kay: That worked. Stay tuned.
David Kay: sent ((message generated was 0x8004e108 ..Token store contains invalid hash)
Noah: Did you make the screenshot before you click that Activate button?
    David Kay: after
Noah: Would you like to do that again?
    Noah: (Supplied Product key)
    Noah: Copy this product key.
Noah: Just to confirm another thing, you install this Windows 8 Professional by using ISO file from TechNet site, right?
    Noah: Not OEM product.
David Kay: OK. But I just tried Product Key with same result. Stand by.
Noah: No, you may copy and paste.
    Noah: Not type.
David Kay: It states product key works then I get the token error.
    Noah: Control Panel\System and Security\System
    Noah: Please find this.
Noah: Windows Properties, and then send screenshot to me.
Noah: Right click my computer, and then <properties>
    David Kay: sent
Noah: I have checked your error, it seems that your installation media come across some problem, just to confirm that, you install this Windows 8 Professional by using ISO file from TechNet site, right?
    David Kay:Yes
David Kay: Please don't say "Wipe and Reload"

    Noah: Still checking.
Noah: I am sorry for that I could not locate useful information about your issue, you may try to reinstall or revert back to your OEM laptop, you could also post your question in this forum:
    Noah: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/category/w8itpro

    Jon,

I don't know where Noah came up with "revert back to your OEM laptop".  He also told me that there was an issue at TechNet with en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440 download.  Is that true?

Bottom line..product keys good.  Both Noah and dialog box during attempted install validate this.  I will pursue Office 2013 activation issue once this issue is resolved. Please help.

  • Hi David,

The ISO you receive as part of a Windows Intune paid subscription should have no issues being activated with the script I provided above.

If you received your ISO elsewhere, then you'll need to engage Windows 8 support.

    Thanks,

    Jon L. - MSFT

  • Jon,

Is a TechNet and an Windows Intune paid subscription the same thing or do I go to another location in the Forums to get help?  If they are the same you can see the the TechNet worker supplied me with a w8itpro hyperlink above.

  • Hi David,

No, technet and Windows Intune are two different things.  Windows Intune is cloud based Device Management Service you subscribe to.  Technet is a online resource for information regarding Microsoft products and tools.

    Thanks,
