2012 R2 Preview: Printer install issue

    Question

  • Been able to install all HP printers except for one.  DesignJet 1050c fails with a “Unable to install printer.  The remote procedure call failed.”  I tried the 2008 R2 x64 driver from HP and also the Vista x64.  The event details are as follows:

  • Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\spool\DRIVERS\x64\3\hpltui.dll

It's likely caused by faulty driver components. I suggset uninstall the current driver and install the latest driver for Windows 2012 from the manufacturer's website.

  • Unfortunately, I didn't see a 2012 specific driver for this device.  Thanks anyways.

  • The failure is this driver when you attempt to install a printer using it.  Set Driver Isolation on this driver in printmanagement and try to add the printer again.

This driver will fail on 2008 R2 as well as 2012 so moving some of it's methods to printisolationhost.exe rather than spoolsv.exe is the safest route.  The driver will still corrupt the memory of printisolationhost.exe but the spooler service stays running.

HP does have a "Code Defect" opened for this driver.  I've been fighting this one for years.

  • This driver also throws UI to session 0.  You will see the image of the plotter once you allow Interactive Services.

Information on this default change in 2012

  • Did you manage to solve this? Same issue here on Windows Server 2012 standard. Seems like HP do not have a driver for this model.

  • Haven't pursued it any further.  We will probably end up just sharing that printer from an older OS box since it's just a one off printer.
