SBS 2003 Fax Client inop with Win 7 x64

    Question

  • Replaced 4 Win XP Pro machines with Win 7 Pro x64 machines on an SBS
2003 server. All works well except faxing. When an attempt to fax to the
server fax, even though server fax appears in the Devices and Printers
as ready, a dialog box pops up stating no driver is installed and must
    be configured.
I have removed the server fax from the client computer, browsed to the
server fax, right clicked it and added it without any change to the
result. All updates have been performed on the server and the
workstations, and fax works from the server itself as well as the
remaining Win XP Pro machine. I am out of ideas

  • Hi JRWeymouth, if I remember correctly, x64 fax driver is not available on SBS2003.

  • Thank you for your response. It would have been nice if that had been
predominantly mentioned while I was doing my research BEFORE I
recommended my customer upgrade his workstations.

  • Is there a way to use the 32 bit driver, or compatibility mode or some
    way to make it work?

    I'm afraid not, JRWeymouth.

  • Hi JRWeymouth,

I found your post here today whilst trying to figure out the same problem, sharing a fax from SBS 2003 onto Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit.

Happy to say I found a solution that works!

on the Win 7 machine, browse to the server and right click on the fax you want to share, choose the connect option.

Will do a little install thing and that's all.

Go start, programs, windows fax and scan, will open up saying no fax accounts configured/accessible (assuming you've not had anything else in before)

go to the tools menu, fax accounts..

go to add a shared fax, now comes the interesting part.

where on XP you would expect to put in

    \\server\fax

you only need to put in

    \\server

it should then pick it up and work, assuming your user account is set as a fax operator (had that problem earlier with another of my users, total thicko moment!)

hope that helps you get sorted :)

  • Thanks so much Bushy, it worked like a charm. Interesting none of the
    Microsoft people knew this.

  • Hi, Similar issue except I'm attached to the fax accont but even though i can see sent items the inbox is empty (apart from the default welcome to windows fax and scan).

tried removing the fax account and rejoining which gives the same outcome.

a vista client attached to the same sbs server can see all the faxes in the inbox (so i'm not sure that the fax inbox is too full).

    any ideas appreciated.

  • I have exactly the same problem as Rich. Installed new Windows7 system & setup as per JRWeymouth.

No inbox contents apart from 'Welcome' fax. Other XP systems are fine.

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Dave.

  • Rich and Rozzy,

Just a small note from the mentioned work around above.  Please note how he metioned FAX OPERATOR.

If you see no faxes, it is a security issue with the logged in account.  Goto your server that hosts the fax server and check the security.

  • I have been researching this issue for quite some time now and I have not seen conclusive answers to this problem.  I am an admin on my network.  I have installed the fax board in a 2003 server and a 2008 server with the same results.  If I use XP I can see the inbox with all the faxes received from a client machine.  When I am on a Win 7 box I see them show up for a second and then all disappear.  I can see them with the fax console on the server in any form.  Is Win 7 truly unable to view the inbox of all faxes received or is there a work around?  None of the aforementioned solutions have made a difference.

    Thank you,

    Todd
