Windows server backup not recording backups properly

    Question

  • I've been having an interesting issue on a couple of client's servers. On one server the windows server backup application showed that the server hasn't been backing up for a couple weeks yet when I checked event viewer there was event ID 1 - Backup started, for all of the missing days but there was no ID 4 or 14 or 49, there wasn't anything no errors either.

Now on the other client's server a year of backups disappeared, one of my co-workers was doing bi-weekly maintenance on the server and everything was good but we checked it about a week later and all of the backups for this year were missing.

We're suspecting that someone at the location switched out drives and never told us so we're investigating that but there's really no one tech savvy at this clients location.

But again this servers event ID's were 1, 4 and 14 for all of the missing backups indicating that backups have been running but the windows server backup application isn't showing this. However it was giving output of backups being ran for a few days after I ran a manual backup but it's stopped again.

Is there any knows issues that could cause the windows server application to output no information like this? Or that could corrupt the backup schedule?

  • Hi,

As you said, without error message we do not have enough information for troubleshooting this issue.

What's the operation system? Since you tried manually backup, please test to backup a simple file and see if it will work. If not, check if any error occurs.

Meanwhile, is there any third party backup tool installed on system? test to disable/uninstall it and see the result.

Also please provide the result of vssadmin list writers.

  • The OS is Windows Server (R) 2008 Enterprise x86

I can't seem to backup only a single file for some reason, is this due to it being Enterprise? I will try to run a backup tonight after the client has closed the store.

There are no other backup tools on the server.

  • Sorry for the delay in reply.

If you could backup a single file, Windows Server Backup should work fine. Have you tried to reboot the server before taking a backup?
