AD Snapshot Issue

    Question

  • Hi Experts,

    I’ve got a problem here. Creating snapshots manually or automatically with a job, is working. But the problem now is, the previous snapshots somehow loses the D: and E: drives. Previously, when I tested it, it was fine. But now, the D: and E: drives are missing after I create another snapshot! In the screenshot below. The first snapshot is highlighted. Then I created another one, the first snapshot doesn't show D: or E: drives anymore. I couldn't find anything on the internet on this. Any ideas?

    AD database files - E:\NTDS
    AD Log files - D:\NTDS
    system volume - C:\WINNT\SYSVOL

  • Do you have made operation to the previous snapshots? When I create another snapshot, the first snapshot also show E: and F: drives.
    AD database files - E:\NTDS
    AD Log files - F:\NTDS
    system volume - C:\WINNT\SYSVOL
    Before you can run the snapshot subcommand, you must run the activate instance subcommand in Ntdsutil to set an active instance. I create snapshots with the following steps:
    1. Create a snapshot:
    2. Mounting an Active Directory snapshot:
    3. Connecting an Active Directory snapshot:
    4. Create another snapshot;

  • Hello,

    As a additional info, if you do not have DC 2012 versions, do NOT use snapshot as Backup solution and use windows backup.

    If you ask me why, please read this link (Ace Fekay MVP answer):
