DW Cube

    Question

  • Hi All,

I have a question like what exactly is a cube. Does cube contain query that fires on database. If so then why it is called as cube if it is a query. Does every reporting tool contain cube. Kindly explain me in detail. Can u suggest any links. Appreciate your help.

    Thanks,

    Venkat.

  • A cube is a set of related measures and dimensions that is used to analyze data. Its multidimensional so its called cube and not DB, DB is always 2 dimensional rows and columns. Cube can be queried using multi dimensional queries like MDX for MSAS. Reporting tool  does not contain cube, OLAP tools like MSAS contains cube. A cube can be developed with or without an underlying relational data source

  • Datawarehouse can be implemented using OLAP or Denormalized Database but best is createing OLAP Cube

  • Hello Venkat,

a cube is a multidimensional database of a OLAP = online analytical process, agains a RDBMS like SQL Server = relational database = OLTP = online transactional process.
