"Windows Update" button missing from the add a printer wizard in Windows 7 - WSUS environment

    Question

  • I manage a WSUS shop. All workstatons get updates from our WSUS server

    XP and Win7

Is there something I'm missing as to why the botton is missing?

I've tried all the polices and registry I could google. Including DontSearchWindowsUpdate Key set to 0.

I'm starting to think its not an option once your PC is setup to use a WSUS server? Does someone know the answer.

    thanks

  • Hi,

Please Change below registry from 1 to 0:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DriverSearching

    REG_DWORD DontSearchWindowsUpdate to '0'

    REG_DWORD DontPromptForWindowsUpdate to '0'

    Hope this helps

  • The most likely explanation is that the functionality has been disabled by policy, but really this is a question for the Windows XP or Windows 7 operating system forums, not the WSUS forum.

WSUS has absolutely nothing to do with the "Windows Update" button on the Add A Printer Wizard -- I have the button on my personal WSUS client -- although it's possible that the "Remove all access to use Windows Update" policy might disable this button.

  • I've searched and tested several polices to try to resolve this including "Remove all access to use Windows Update".

My WSUS is not synchronizing Drivers so I want workstations to be able to get drivers from Microsoft update site.

Thanks Lawrence, that is the confirmation I needed. I now know that I have a miss configuration (most likely a policy) and that "Windows Update" button should be available even though WSUS is pushing out the updates.
