Wiping the primary server after backing up to secondary DPM server

    Question

  • Hi, we currently have a main DPM server that everything is backed up to, but there is a problem with the storage array connected to this server. We need to completely wipe the storage array associated with this server, so we were planning to backup all of the shares and databases that the first DPM server is protecting to our secondary DPM server.

If we do this, and then wipe the primary DPM's storage - will everything rebuild correctly and will the secondary DPM server be in a consistent state? Or are we perhaps going about this the wrong way entirely?

  • If your only option is to wipe the storage, then you are going into the right direction but bear in mind that once you start secondary Protection, you won't have there all the currently available recovery points.

    For instance.

    Day 1.

You do have 30 days worth of recovery points for protected data on your Primary DPM server

    You start secondary protection.

On the secondary DPM server you will have a single day worth of recovery point because you just started Secondary Protection.

When you switch protection from primary to secondary, now the secondary DPM server will be responsible for creating backups of your protected servers.

After you wipe your primary DPM Server you won't have the option to restore something that was backed up 10 days ago...

  • Thanks for your help. This brings up another question - when the primary server (and all its backed up shares) goes down, will the secondary DPM server continue to back up data from the original sources or will it just hang as it repeatedly asks the primary server for those backups?

  • If you don't switch protection to the secondary DPM server, it will repeatedly complain....
