disable / change timeout when printer is powered off in windws 8 / 8.1

    Question

  • I don't keep my printers powered on all of the time. a lot of the time i want to print to my non-default printer, a pdf printer. but, when the physical printer is not powered on, the program hangs while windows 8 checks for the printer.

how do I disable this check or at least change the timeout so I don't have to sit here and wait a minute for the printer check to complete every time?

  • Hi,

I would like to gather some information to help you in a better way:

    1) Does the same problem when you tried to print other document, such as txt or word?
    2) Do you get any error message in Event Log when you try to print the documents?
    3) What is the Make and Model of the Printer connected to the computer?

I would suggest you to run the printer troubleshooter as it looks like an issue with the printer connected to the computer.

    You can follow the methods:

    Method 1:

Please refer to the link to run the troubleshooter and check if it helps.

    Method 2:

I would suggest you to update the drivers for the printer by referring to the manufacturer website.

You can refer to the manufacturer website to download the latest printer driver for Windows 8 and install the driver on the computer.

If there are no drivers for the printer for Windows 8, you can download the latest driver available and install the driver in Windows compatibility mode.

You can refer to the link to download and install the driver in Windows compatibility mode:

Follow the section “Apply a compatibility mode”:

  • Have you set the physical printer as default printer?

Probably, the program tries to find the printer and when it is turned of it hangs up.
