2003 to 2008R2 migration

    Question

  • My question is two fold.  First is it possible to leave roles such as DHCP and DNS on a dcpromo'd out 2003 server and use only 2008 R2 servers as DCs?  In other words, while in the process of upgrading, can we raise the domain functional level to 2008R2 while those functions...DHCP, DNS are still running on old 2003 Servers that are no longer DC's.

Part 2 - If that is not possible, is it best to split the scope temporarily between the old dc and the new 2008R2 dc before migrating with the Windows Server Migration Tools or just attempt the migration overnight?

Thanks in advance for any advise.

  • Active directory  Windows Server 2008 R2 functional level requires that all domain controllers have Windows Server 2008  R2 or a later operating system installed in the domain or in the forest.

There is no issue to keep DNS/DHCP roles in windows 2003 as member servers.Bur you need to demote active directory from windows 2003 if require  to raise windows 2008 r2 functioal levels

  • "The newest domain functional levels and the newest forest functional levels affect only the way that the domain controllers operate together as a group. The clients that interact with the domain or with the forest are unaffected. Additionally, applications are unaffected by changes to the domain functional levels or to the forest functional levels."

So in other words, you can change the DC's to 2012 Functional level if you want as the DHCP/DNS server is not a DC and thus won't be affected.

Be kind and Mark as Answer if I helped.
