  • Hi,
If you have purchased Software Assurance on the previous Windows Server 2008 R2 licensing, it would be free to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2. If not, you may need to purchase the server licenses again if you want to upgrade.
In addition, according to the upgrade Options for Windows Server 2012 R2, it seems that you cannot upgrade from Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation version to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard version directly and you need to upgrade to Windows server 2008 R2 Standard firstly.
    Best regards,

  • Hello,

since October 1, 2011 is not more possible to purchase the upgrade license from Windows Server Foundation 2008 r2 to Standard Edition.

if you wants to have the Standard Edition than you Needs to purchase the Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and you can downgrade to Standard 2008 R2.

    thanks
