Upgrading from WHS 2003 to 2012 on a headless setup. How to install 2012 on an external HDD and transfer to server?

    Question

  • Hi,

I have an HP MediaSmart Server 485. The HDD with the operating system has died and is now running as a large external HDD. I want to install Server 2012 on a brand new drive. As it's headless,  I can't just do a fresh install on the server as is. How do I install the 2012 OS on the new drive in an enclosure via my laptop (either windows 7 or 8) and transfer the drive to the server box once it's installed?

Thanks so much for your help. Lots of Googling has left me with vague answers and I really don't want to screw this up.

  • Unless your laptop has the same HAL as your server, you bound to run into problems. There is a way to install Windows headless via EMS, which is also used as a means to communicate with a unresponsive Windows Server locally, but I personally have never taken this route and the interface is limited to a console-like experience.
