MDT 2012 SP1 and Dart 8 Integration

    Question

  • I followed Michael's guide at http://blogs.technet.com/b/mniehaus/archive/2011/11/28/mdt-2012-new-feature-dart-integration.aspx to get everything installed and setup.  My MDT 2012 is on a Windows 2008 R2 server and I got everything installed ok and got the toolsx64.cab file copied to my tools\x64 folder.  When I go to the PE properties of the MDT Workbench I do not get the option to select Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolkit (DaRT).

As a test I tried renaming toolsx64.cab to tools.cab.  After I did that it then showed in the PE options and when I updated the deployment share it did say added component dart but it didn't list any dart files being added which I am not sure if it does or not.  Anyways, even though that showed it was there it did not integrate into my boot image and did not work.

Amm I suppose to rename the toolsx64.cab file?  Am I missing something else?  Ides?

  • I did a little testing on a test server I have and it worked.  About the only difference that I can think of is the test server has never had WAIK installed, it had a fresh install of ADK.  The server I am having issues with originally had WAIK but was uninstalled and then ADK was installed.  Could this be the issue?

Ive had alot of trouble with trying to install DART 8 on a machine which has(had) AIK on it. Eventully we just rebuilt the machine and installed MDT + DART 8 without an AIK.

  • I've seen the same issues as DunkG and prefer just to have a clean machine with ADK on it.  I have a blog post also about how to integrate DaRT 8 with MDT 2012 and also how to utilize it.

  • Thanks guys, the answer I ws afraid of!  I tried to manually do some cleanup of the old WAIK and reinstalled ADK but still no go.  A bit frustrating I have to rebuild the server.

  • Hello David,

i am having some issues with the combination Dart8/ADK/Server2008r2

    Will this combination work?

Until now there is no DART8 listed on my environment with server2008r2. In another evironment with Server2012 this is working well.

Dart7 will also not work (with adk?), a reboot occured before the credentials-check while doing a pxe-boot by wds.

What could be the issue? (i prefer using Dart8)

Update : i did also extra Dart7 using admin-switch /a and then added dart7 x86 to my x86-bootimages of MDT.

I receive the following error that indicates that Dart7 will not work with ADK(windows8)

    Thx

  • Well, let's be clear about what supports what:

    WAIK can be installed on 2003 / Vista / 2008 / 7 / 2008R2
    ADK can be installed on Vista / 2008 / 7 / 2008R2 / 8 / 2012
    WinPE 3 (based on Win 7 / 2008R2) can be used to deploy XP / 2003 / Vista / 2008 / 7 / 2008R2 / 8 / 2012
    WinPE 4 (based on Win 8 / 2012) can be used to deploy XP / 2003 / Vista / 2008 / 7 / 2008R2 / 8 / 2012 (so far as I know, I can't find the ref right now)
    DaRT 7 can be used with a running OS of 7 / 2008R2 / WinPE3
    DaRT 8 can be used with a running OS of 8 / 2012 / WinPE4
    MDT 2012U1 can be installed on 2008SP2 / 7 / 2008R2 / 8 / 2012

That said, your "Dart8/ADK/Server2008r2" question will not work, because DaRT 8 does not support 2008R2.  However, I think you meant to ask if you can deploy DaRT 8 from MDT using ADK on Server 2008R2.  The answer to that is yes, as long as the OS you are pushing / installing it into is 8 / 2012 / WinPE4.  That make sense?

Also, it's best if you have a new question to start a new thread, not post to an old one that's already been marked as answered. : )
