Windows Update KB2494088 (MS11-49) security update for SQL 2008 R2 causing SQL to stop working.

    Question

  • I recently updated two windows 2008 R2 servers that are identical and has SQL 2008 R2 installed.

The server was not updated for a couple of months so I ran the windows update on both servers.

the updates ran with no issues except that MS11-49 or KB2494088 for SQL 2008 R2 was included in the list and easy to overlook.

In fact the update should be part of windows update.  Updates for SQL are done separately as an option.

Anyway, the update crashed my SQL and I am at a lost.

    I have referenced the following

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2494088/en-us

and nothing has worked on just one server.  The other server I did not touch yet.

    do you have any suggestions.

    Thanks

    Hector.

  • This problem only occurs if you are running the RTM version with no patches.  You must install the current service pack.

    See:

  • Hello,

If the update was installed successfully, you can always uninstall it using Control Panel -> Programs and Features.

If the update failed to install successfully, could you please with us the Summary.txt log file?

    Hope this helps.

  • Alberto,

On one server I uninstalled the update.  then I installed the service pack.  this did not work.  SQL never came back up.  I think this server is done.

However on the other server I did not touch it after the update so I will send you the log you requested which should after the update.

    Thanks

    Hector.

  • That log indicates you are running the RTM version "10.50.1600.1".  You need to install SP2.

  • Yes.  You can install it at any time.  Preferably before the security update was applied.

  • Security Update was already installed.  Do you think Service Pack will bring the SQL back up
