Outlook 2013 starts in offline mode after moving the mailbox from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010

    Question

  • We have Exchange 2007/2010 mixed environment with Exchange 2010 SP3. After moving mailbox from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010, Outlook 2013 users have a problem where Outlook opens in offline mode. A system reboot brings all to normal. But would like to know if it is a known issue.

Note: Outlook 2010 works properly after moving.

  • How are you connecting, RPC or outlook anywhere?

I'm curious to what's in the RPC Client Access log file on the Exchange 2010 server.  And to confirm, you are restarting the client PC not the server- correct?

  • Not sure if it has got anything to do on server. The client connections to server start only after a connection is established but Outlook opens in offline mode and on disabling Work Offline button connections are back. So, I have not checked the RCA logs.

Yes, rebooting the PC not server.

  • Hi,

It’s an unexpected behavior not a known issue. And there is a reference about offline mode:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/about-working-offline-HP005251652.aspx

Generally, we can switch offline mode to online mode:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/work-offline-to-avoid-data-connection-charges-HA102809572.aspx?CTT=1

Maybe the issue is related to the network, name resolution and firewall configurations.

If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.
    Thanks,

  • the first time outlook connects to a moved mailbox it connects to the original server exchange 2007 the exchange 2007 server tells outlook the mailbox has moved to the exchange 2010 and reconfigures the users local email profile, if the 2007 is unavailable outlook does not know where the mailbox has been moved to so it assumes it's still on the 2007 server.

  • Thanks Angela. But, same issue is not seen with Outlook 2010. And another point, this happens only for those users whose Outlook was open when moved, only for Outlook 2013.

Each time they open Outlook it opens in Offline mode and obviously they change it to online to get the emails. Definitely, we would not want the users to change it to onilne manually.

Other Outlook 2013 users whose mailbox is moved during off working hours dont have any issues.

  • If that happens for first time its understood. But, it happens each time OUtlook is opened. That is not expected. Outlook already knows mailbox is on 2010

  • Hi,

The following resolutions can be referred to:

    1. Disable all the AV, especially mail scan
    2. Run outlook.exe /safe to disable all Outlook add-ins

Moreover, when users frequently work offline or without connectivity, we can choose online mode instead of cached mode:

If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.

    Thanks,
