Allow access to CHILD Folders deny Parent folder access?

    Question

  • We would like users to have access to particular sub/child folders in a directory. However, we do not want them to be able to view the other directories or access them.

For Example, there is a big share with the UNC \\Server1\OfficeDocs

We want to map the following share \\Server1\OfficeDocs\Files 2013\ but we do not want them to be able to access any of the other files in the \\Server1\OfficeDocs\ share.

How can we configure this so that have the right share and security permissions to access the \\Server1\OfficeDocs\Files 2013\ directory, however still have restrictions from viewing anything else under the \\Server1\OfficeDocs\ directory?

    Thank you!

  • try this one, set the settings on the security tab of every folder.

\\Server1\ --> remove "everyone" and "authenticated users" --> specify who are the users that are just allowed to access

\\Server1\OfficeDocs --> remove "everyone" and "authenticated users" --> specify who are the users that are just allowed to access

same thing goes to Files 2013

\\Server1\OfficeDocs\Files 2013\ --> remove "everyone" and "authenticated users" --> specify who are the users that are just allowed to access

above config will only be ideal if you're on a small environment, but if you're network is a large scale think of another solution.

Every second counts..make use of it.

  • Hi,

The easiest way is to turn off simple \\Server1\OfficeDocs sharing and share the \\Server1\OfficeDocs\Files 2013 folder.

If you don't want to, I assume there is still user or user group need to access the other folders in \\Server1\OfficeDocs. I will use Administrators (or Domain Admins) group as an example. We can do the following setting to the shared folder:

    1. For \\Server1\OfficeDocs folder, grant Full Control – Administrators (or Domain Admins) – “This Folder, Subfolders and Files”. Also give Read – Users (or Domain Users) – “This folder only“ permission to allow users accessing this folder.
    2. For \\Server1\OfficeDocs\Files2013, give required permission to Users (Or domain Users) so they could access it.

    I hope this helps.
