Has anyone ever successfully setup a linked server to SAS? If so, what were the steps that you followed, or do you have any documentation on this? We have a base SAS 9.1 environment. I am trying to setup a linked server on SQL Server 2012 to the SAS server so I can run openqueries on the SAS datasets.
I have already downloaded ODBC and OLEDB drivers for SAS from the link below,
But can anyone has ever done this?
The Microsoft SQL server has a linked server feature that lets you link to other server and export the data from other database to the Microsoft SQL server. Before you creating an linked server, we need to verify that the SAS drivers for ODBC which download can provide read and write access to SQL Server databases. I recommend you need to contact SAS support member. If yes, you can create an linked server to connect SAS server via performing the following steps, usually, you can use two ways to create linked server: GUI in SSMS and T-SQL statement.
For more information, you can review the following article.

Thanks for your reply, I know about the article you have given, it just give you the way to create a linked server which I know.
I want to know the provider used to connect to SAS and do we need to give file location or file name in the place of server.
I also wanted to know the ODBC creation for SAS, as the window for ODBC Creation for SAS has lots of fields which I am new to and is unable to fill them correctly yet.

If you can open SSMS>Server Objects>Linked Servers>Providers, You will see list of Providers support in your system. Install the SAS ODBC driver and check the list, i am sure that a SAS provider must be listed in the provider list.
Please refer the below link. It is talking about SSIS connectivity to SAS. Yes it is using filename.
