Windows 8 build not starting

    Question

  • Hey guys, im trying to build a Surface Pro device from USB media but its not getting past the WinPe stage.

Running MDT 2012 SP1 with ADK and WinPe 4.0 installed. USB is FAT32 formatted and surface has secure boot disabled.

I have created a task sequence, drive packages, selection profile etc and setup a media for it with our usual variables and bootstrap.ini settings.

When booting from USB, it loads in WinPe then after a few seconds displays the warning: FAILURE ( 5206 ): The Deployment Wizard was cancelled or did not complete successfully.  The deployment will not proceed.

Looking in the BDD.log the last results are:

I suspect the error may be due to the MSHTA.exe line as that does not return any code. Research so far suggests this occurs where someone has updated from WinPE 3.0 and usual fix is to revert back to winPe 3.0 from WAIK, however I require WinPE4.0 to support the Windows 8 deployment.

    any thoughts?

  • Did you do anything special with the USB Media to support the WIM file that I'm guessing is larger than 4 GB?  It looks like the Wizard call pointed to M:, but the Cleanup referenced X:.... something is off.

  • Nope, and the wim file is <4gb so it would work on the Fat32 file
system. No special partitioning or anything on the USB. For some reason
the WinPE is assigning drive letter M for the USB.
