2012 R2 Preview crash in mlang.dll, but symbols not in MS download

    Question

  • I have a .DMP file with a crash that appears to be in mlang.dll:

    EXCEPTION_RECORD:  ffffffffffffffff -- (.exr 0xffffffffffffffff)
    ExceptionAddress: 00007ff94865c85c (<Unloaded_mlang.dll>+0x000000000000c85c)
       ExceptionCode: c0000005 (Access violation)
      ExceptionFlags: 00000000
    NumberParameters: 2
       Parameter[0]: 0000000000000008
       Parameter[1]: 00007ff94865c85c
Attempt to execute non-executable address 00007ff94865c85c

But mlang symbols couldn't be loaded by WinDbg:

    Unloaded modules:
    00007ff9`5d0e0000 00007ff9`5d1c1000   fastprox.dll
    00007ff9`5d060000 00007ff9`5d074000   wbemsvc.dll
    00007ff9`5d460000 00007ff9`5d470000   wbemprox.dll
    00007ff9`5e030000 00007ff9`5e0af000   wbemcomn.dll
    00007ff9`48650000 00007ff9`4868b000   mlang.dll
    00007ff9`4ecf0000 00007ff9`4ed70000   nativerd.dll
    00007ff9`4b860000 00007ff9`4b899000   IISRES.DLL
    00007ff9`4b7a0000 00007ff9`4b7eb000   iisutil.dll
    00007ff9`5f560000 00007ff9`5f598000   XmlLite.dll
    00007ff9`5f2c0000 00007ff9`5f2cb000   ktmw32.dll

NOTE: This is after downloading and installing the R2 Preview symbols off the link from:

    msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg463028.aspx#Download_windows

Anyone else running into problems with mlang symbols on R2 Preview, or have suggestions on how to get a valid stack crawl?

BTW, my WinDbg symbol path is also set to include msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols.)

  • Yes as it is still a previous version we may encounter conflict issues.

Mlang.dll related to multi-language function, which may not be upgraded by 2012 R2. Please see if the issue still exists and please understand that we may need to wait for an update as the fix.

  • Perhaps the forums are not the best fit for reporting errors in preview versions of operating systems.

Personally I would test the connect site and wait for more advanced versions. Some features may change considerably.
