Exchange 2007 SP3 - MSExchange System Attendant Mailbox Error ID 4001

    Question

  • Hello everybody,

this is my first post here.

I have searched for days and days to find a solution but EVERYthing i found didn´t work for me and this is driving me crazy! (at least because this is the ONLY error/warning I have on this machine

(Please notice that I am German and the translation is not 100% correct but I think everybody will understand what I mean)

    The setup:

one server: HP DL380: DC WIN2008R2

    and

one Server:  HP DL380: WIN2008R2 with E2007 SP3 (<-on this machine the error occurs)

Both are brand new and clean installed. Both servers have 2 Network cards but only one is activated on every machine the other is deactivated. IPv6 is deactivated on every card.

TCP/UDP/IP Checksum offload (IPv4): Rx/Tx enabled. This is the default setting.

I get the following error on every boot:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A transient failure has occurred. The problem may resolve itself in awhile. The service will retry in 56 seconds. Diagnostic information:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But everything seems to work fine. At least I can not notice anything is not working well.

After these 56 seconds it seems that the mailbox could then be opened.

How can i get rid of it? I think that I have to set any service from "automatic" to "automatic (delayed)" ? Am I right here? If yes which service is it?

The following solution did also not work and gives me even more failures:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940845/en-us

I tried everything here. MAYBE I only need to make not ALL changes but only 1 or 2 or so. If yes, which should I do?

    Thanks a lot in advance.

  • Hello,

    Regarding to your question

I would also like to share some information about the scenarios when this event is logged on the server as under:

    1. Stores fails to mount on the server.

    2. System Attendant or Information Store services fails to start.

    3. If there is NIC card teaming enabled on the server. (If we have teaming enabled, we would have to disable it)

Few suggestions I would recommend are as under:

    1. Make sure System Attendant Mailbox is present on the server by running the command get-mailboxstatistics –id “Microsoft System Attendant” | fl

    2. Check if you are facing any issues in starting Microsoft Exchange Services or mounting Mailbox Stores.

Plus, you can try below steps:

Add the following registry key to the affectd server to delay the intial startup

attempt of the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant Service.

    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeSA\Parameters

    Key (DWORD): BootPause

Value: 120 (The value is in seconds <decimal>)

The steps to reconfigure the dependencies are as follows:

    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeADTopology

    Key (Multi_SZ): DependOnService

    Value: MSExchangeSA

    Best Regards!
